Here's something I wrote to someone this morning who kept invoking the "liberal media". As with everything I write, feel free to cut and paste it and pass it off as your own if ever feel the need.

As soon as someone uses the phrase "liberal media" they lose all credibility with me. The only way the mainstream media could have a more conservative slant is if it was actually owned outright by the GOP. For the last 10 years there's been the same pattern in all stories -- conservatives are given every benefit of the doubt while liberals are portrayed in the worst spin the talking heads can dream up.
For example, Bush can be a military deserter and insider trader and nothing is reported on it, while if Gore uses the wrong telephone to call a campaign contributor, it's a scandal we hear about every day for a month.
Have you read this article, friend?
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=14976&cf2=1Read that and get back to me about the "liberal media".
Here's another one you might find interesting:
http://www.fair.org/reports/fox.htmlAnd finally, for a good explanation of the whole phenomonom:
http://www.makethemaccountable.com/coverup/Part_04.htmHere's the executive summary: the media gets direct, tangible rewards from GOP administrations, in the form of the removal of all restrictions on concentration of media ownership as well as direct "tax rebates". For example, General Electric, owner of NBC, will get a check for $684 million as a refund of all the "alternative minimum taxes" they paid since 1984. They'll also be allowed to snap up all media properties they can buy since the GOP regards any restrictions on corporate ownership of the the media as an affront to the first amendment.
Now, since the media is big business, and pretty much all of our media is owned by a handful of mega-corporations, the CEO's have a direct responsibility to increase the value of their companies -- a greater obligation than the mere telling of truth. And so they consistently support the GOP. It's an almost inevitable consequence of treating the media as merely another business rather than as an institution with some responsibility to the people. And it doesn't require conspiracy theory, just simple self-interest on the part of GE, Disney, etc.
Read this articles, consider their implications, ransack your memory for treatments of Clinton vs treatments of Bush, and then try to tell me again that we have a "liberal media". I'm betting that if you're honest with yourself you won't be able to do it.
