CA Car Tax Bill Cause of Schwarzenegger Win?
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 05:49 PM by Samaka 3ajiba
Are the statistics in the article about who turned out to vote accurate? It claims it was a lower turnout than in 2002.

excerpts from an article published at capital grilling:

So why was Governor Davis recalled and why was Arnold elected governor of California? Two reasons that should come as no surprise. Californians just didn't like Governor Davis and the car tax bill came in the mail at the absolute worst political moment for Governor Davis.

Post mortem polling will shed light on this theory, but it seems reasonable to assume that the car tax bill hit the mailboxes right before the election and people became infuriated, including base Democratic voters who were plain mad that they were footing the bill while having to contend with a slow economy. It is doubtful this anger will last, as it was likely purged yesterday - unless the economy reverses its current trend going into the 2004 presidential election.

4. Virginia Car Tax
Was the car tax theory already advanced by CNN? I don't think it sounds that farfetched regardless of who came up with it.

It wasn't too long ago the Virginia Car Tax was a hot item that mobilized a lot of voters in Virginia and got Gilmore elected. Of course, nothing ever happened after that.

6. This tax pales in the face of ATM fees and increase highway tolls
nationwide. The fools really think they received a tax cut when in fact the average working person who travels the highways and bridges in NY, PA, Delaware, NJ, and MD pay way more in increase tolls to get to work everyday than any one time car tax. They just don't get it.

7. SB60 (driver licenses for illegal aliens) was a bigger factor
Davis' loss cannot be blamed on one or two mistakes. It took him several months of constant blunders plus a Democratic Party that refused to back Davis up to get Arnold Schwarzenegger elected.

8. You beat me to this.
Yes, I think it is. Not only that, look at Leno's support of him. Leno owns an airplane hanger full of cars. Imagine what tripling the car registration would be to wealthy people like him who own fleets of cars for their own personal use and amusement.

In California a car is a necessity even to the poorest working family. Car registration is already is one of the highest in the nation here. Tripling the car registration would be a hardship for many families including mine. I do think though that whoever dreamed this up should have excluded at least one car and only raised the tax on excess automobiles.

I believe that many poor single car owners voted for Arnold for this reason. What they don't realize is that the money will have to come from somewhere and most likely they, not the rich, will be the ones to pay with additional sales tax, I think anyway.

Warren Buffet had the best idea to increase property taxes on the ultra-rich estates, but of course this is not popular among the ultra-rich Republicans.
