A bad bet
By Hunter S. Thompson
Page 2 columnist

Hunter S. Thompson believes hiring Rush Limbaugh was a bad move.

SNIP

Ah, but we stray into Racism, eh? But not really. No. It is just another way of wondering out loud how I came to be working at the same Sports Desk as Rush Limbaugh. It seems impossible, but it happened, and I found an odd humor in it, a childish kind of suicidal glee that is common to apes and hyenas.

But not for long. The next time I looked, that fool was gone from the organization. Whack! Just like that. One minute he was a famous football commentator, and the next minute he was gone.

Rush never knew much about football, anyway. He was dumb and loud, but he has never been anything more or less than a half-bright commentator with an agenda who wanted more than his 15 minutes of bitchy fame. He was greedy, and so was ESPN for hiring him.

Rush Limbaugh is a lame professional Swine and he makes a good living at it. He is like a hired Geek in some traveling backwoods carnival -- the freaks who bite the heads off Chickens -- but Limbaugh is a modernized Geek who thinks he can bite the heads off of people.

Ho ho ho, eh? Sure, let's hire Rush Limbaugh to rave on TV, so we can bump up our Ratings. Ah, we should be ashamed of ourselves. And I am. Sorry, we got stupid for a minute. It won't happen again.

14. Just because you say it isn't racist means absolutely nothing.
Obviously, many did..enough to put the heat on ESPN and get his bigoted ass fired.

BTW,does it bother you in the least that the hatred spewed from him over the last 4 years is just the musings of a drug addled mind?

I think it's a hoot,20 million people believing the nonsense, lies, bigotry and hatred spewed from the mouth of a DRUGGIE!!!

22. You listen to Rush? Well knock me over with a feather.
How about this comment? "Why should we listen to blacks? They're 12% of the population. Who the hell cares."

Or, how about the day he said Blacks and Hispanics are "too supid" to vote.

You must listen only on days when he slams gays, liberals and druggies.

24. Well, old Rush may have learned a trick or two over the years
He is famous for, in his earlier days, telling a black caller to "take the bone out of your nose and call me back." In the intervening years, he has learned to make selective use of quotations of unspecified "others" to make his racist points.

Who are the national media figures who pumped up the accomplishments of Donovan McNabb? Coyly, Rush doesn't see fit to identify them. He just makes a blanket statement that there are media figures who have done this as a way of stumping for the success of a black man as a quarterback in the NFL.

Has McNabb struggled this year? Without a doubt. Has he been successful in past years? Anyone with a even nodding acquaintance of the NFL would have to say "yes." After all, the Eagles have been a playoff team and a competitive contender with McNabb taking the snaps. Could the exact same thing be said of, for example, Rich Gannon of the Oakland Raiders? And yet, Rush didn't say that Gannon's success was a chimera of certain media types who want to see a white guy spoken well of as a quarterback. I wonder why?

Limbaugh has learned much over the years. He no longer makes racist comments on his own, but ascribes them to others and reports them faithfully. When called on it, he can credibly claim "I didn't say that, someone else did." But the message is pretty clear: Rush is a racist; he just knows enough not to say it directly. Fortunately, millions of Americans recognize that garbage for just what it is. Sadly, there are still a few who are hoodwinked by the disclaimer.

29. I'm not in the business of defending Rush....
but some of you are forcing me to respond to assertions that are misleading or just plain untrue.
The thing about McNabb. It isn't difficult to make the case that McNabb has been overrated his whole career. As Slate magazine pointed out last week, it has been the Eagles' defense which has gotten Philadelphia into the playoffs the past few years. The defense has never ranked lower than the top five, while the Eagles' offense has been in the bottom half those years. He was compared to Trent Dilfer of the 2000 Ravens. Nobody credited Dilfer for leading Baltimore to the Super Bowl championship.
As for Gannon, he really is a lot of the reason for the Raiders' success. For one thing Oakland's defense, particularly its rush defense is much weaker than that of Philly's as we saw in the Super Bowl. So comparing Gannon to McNabb is misleading. McNabb is much closer to Dilfer.
As for your claim about Rush's early racist comments, I never heard them. Perhaps he did say them. All I am asking is that you be accurate with those you do ascribe as racist. Thanks.

35. So you are saying the owners of the team are paying out $100,000,000.00
for a quarterback just because he is black. McNabb has one of the largest contracts in the league but it is because he is black and not because he is talented. You are starting to sound every bit as racist as Rush. Better think your position through a little bit better. The Media didn't pay his salary and the people that do aren't stupid. They don't throw money away.

$115,000,000: McNabb's jackpot
The Eagles star agrees to the NFL's richest contract ever
By Phil Sheridan
Inquirer Staff Writer

Donovan McNabb just became the highest-paid player in National Football League history.
The Eagles and their 25-year-old franchise quarterback yesterday completed negotiations on a 12-year, $115 million contract that includes more than $20 million in guaranteed bonus money, according to sources familiar with the deal.
The contract, negotiated by Eagles president Joe Banner and agent Fletcher Smith of Chicago, took several weeks to work out. Several components of the complex deal had to be approved by the NFL office.

What don't you understand about this statement?

Ah, but we stray into Racism, eh? But not really. No.

He is being ambiguous (probably for legal reasons) but perhaps because he is playing with the reader and throwing two sides into the pit.

It seems you lost an arguement on this subject somewhere else on DU or picked it up in Freepsville and your blind rage has caused you to selectively misread the article.

Do my posts reflect rage? No. Have I "lost an arguement (sic) somewhere else on DU" over this? No. How can you lose an argument by expressing an opinion? I see no reason to read this article because I heard Rush's quote on ESPN live the day he said it. I know what happened, and I know what my opinion is about it. Thanks.

You "see no reason" to read the article but you're a regular Rush listener. Hmmm...

Definitely, do NOT expose yourself to Hunter S. Thompson. He's far too complicated for you. I'd not call him "PC" by any means but he has a sincere love for what can be good about this country. The article actually has little to say about the infamous "quote".

But don't trouble your little head about it. Just turn on your radio & let somebody else tell you what to think.

39. I've already given my opinion
on Rush's ESPN comment because, for the third time, I saw it live when he said it. I don't need to read an article to know what to think about it.
Secondly, Rush isn't 'my boy' but after 15 years or so, if you have never heard even a snippet of Rush's show you must be living in a cave. You should take a poll of fellow DUers and find out who have never heard even a word of Rush's show.

Another one? On his first day, the Pigboy made commentary about black head coaches and the hiring process. Then two weeks later, instead of talking about football, duh.., he links the Eagles problems with the media hyping Donovan McNabb because he is black?

Get a clue pal, just bringing that point into a conversation that had NOTHING to do with race is racist. The fucking pig, blowhard, chickenhawk, coward pussbag had an agenda from the beginning. And so do you.

Now get back in the toolbox. How the hell did you get out in the first place? Did someone leave the lid open?

41. I just refuted it,
Limpdick interjected race into a discussion when there is no reason under the sun to have done it. Give me a reason to bring race into the discussion of the disappointing start to the season for the Philadelphia Eagles.

You are the one who came out and said it wasn't racist. I say it was. Why did the pigboy bring race into that discussion? Was anyone else? Did Michael Irvin say the Eagles started poorly because they have blacks in "thinking" positions when they should be relegated to the heavy lifting and running? No, he didn't. Did anyone else say one goddamn thing about race? No.

Only the gasbag, racist fuck Rush did because he has an agenda. A racist agenda. And you, my furry little trouble-making friend are giving him cover. Are you a racist pig too?

Don't answer that.
