While Paul's libertarian philosophy often intersects with liberal views, the differences are enough to alienate some of the Democratic constituencies Dean is cultivating. For example, Gov Dean is on record applauding the Lawrence vs Texas Supreme Court decision. Paul doesn't like it one bit -- he considers it unconstitutional, an usurpation of states rights. That one issue alone would be enough to substantially dent gay support.
