Will Cruz Bustamante hold Arnold Schwarzenegger a prisoner of the state the governor-elect calls Caleeefornya?
Americans now know California’s constitution is peculiar, allowing for an easy relatively easy recall of its sitting governor.

But few know that the Lieutenant Governor plays more than a ceremonial role. In fact, he can make the governor a prisoner in his own state, simply by becoming governor every time Arnold decides to take a trip outside the state.

No fundraisers out of state for this guy hopefully. Actually, it's more common than not for the two to be of opposing offices. During the 16 years of Deukmejian and Wilson, we have Democratic lieutenant governors, and during Jerry Brown's second term, he had a GOP number two.

In California gov. and lt. gov. are elected separatley, just like the US used to do with the pres and vp (albeit waaaaayyy before my time). I like it: it provides one more check on the power of the executive. What's unusual to me is having both gov and lt. gov from the same party.

Besides, we have a reputation to uphold out here.

4. Remember Mike Curb?

He was the right-wing Lieutenant Governor under Jerry Brown. Every time Brown left the state, Curb would pass a flurry of laws proposed by his cronies in the legislature. Brown became a virtual prisoner of California. Which, I admit, isn't as bad as it sounds.

Tío Cruz could easily do the same thing to Ahnold.

Like I've said before, Gov. Schwartzenegger isn't going to be half the behemoth he may seem to be.

Susan Cowsill recently married dB's member Peter Holsapple, whom she met through Bangle Vicki Peterson, as a member of the rootsy/Americana band the Continental Drifters, and her brothers are still knocking around the music biz, "progressive" singer-songwriters.

Curb, meanwhile, still plots his political and business comebacks with his fan club, like a fundamentalist version of Pinky and the Brain.

Susie C. is still as cute as a jar full of buttons; Curb is just as slimy as ever.

In 1996 when Wilson was attempting his sorry try to run for Pres, he and Atty General Dan Lungren got together and wanted to change the California consitution that would ELIMINATE the office of Lt. Governor giving the power to the Attnorey General should the gov leave office.
