another huge reason to dump Bush?
http://robots.cnn.com/2003/TECH/biztech/10/02/solar.cells.reut/

<snip>AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -- A major European chip maker said this week it had discovered new ways to produce solar cells which will generate electricity twenty times cheaper than today's solar panels.

STMicroelectronics, Europe's largest semiconductor maker, said that, by the end of next year, it expected to have made the first stable prototypes of the new cells, which could then be put into production.

<snip>

I just talked to my sis who is a very strong liberal,but doesn't do the internet thing. She does have a couple degrees in physics and works with the nuclear power plants though,so I consider her to be a reliable source when it comes to alternative energy sources. She said this is a major breakthrough,and the fact that it was developed in Amsterdam and not the U.S. could be directly related to the refusal of Bush to sign the Kyoto treaty. I'm fuzzy on the details,but I think he screwed us big time here. But...if this is the major breakthrough my sis thinks it is..WTG Amsterdam!

3. The fuzziness comes in...
... not recognizing that there are incentives implicit in the Kyoto Protocol. The EU, having declared Kyoto a part of their governmental plan, stimulated demand, and STMicro obliged.

In this country, Bush has laid waste to renewables/alternative energy research and development--therefore, no incentive to jump into the field, so the innovative work is being done in other countries. Part of that incentive is that government regulation (to maintain compliance with the Kyoto Protocol) creates new markets. That's what STMicro is counting on--getting into the new market for alternative energy with a highly price-competitive product.

Cheers.
