Baltimore Tunnel Traffic Diverted Due To Security Precaution

BALTIMORE -- Maryland Department of Transportation police have closed sections of the Fort McHenry Tunnel and closed the Harbor Tunnel for a security precaution late Tuesday morning.

Pictures show that police are stopping and examining larger vehicles around the Fort McHenry tunnel.

WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Jayne Miller said police are acting on information concerning the Baltimore tunnels that has been gathered over the past several days. Miller said police emphasize that they are showing "an abundance of caution" in undertaking this operation.

Images from Newschopper 11 showed several officers walking around with weapons drawn at the mouth of the Fort McHenry tunnel. Traffic is flowing slowly through the inside tubes at the Fort McHenry.

The I-95 tunnel and the I-895 tunnel. Both tunnels go under the Baltimore Harbor. 95 does connect to DC but the tunnels in question do not.

aren't going to care unless they're driving up to Baltimore for business that day. This is, however, close enough to DC that it would be on the local DC stations as "newsworthy" and perhaps eat up air time that would go to other things such as speculation about the Plame case or the latest polling numbers. So yes, this could be a ploy to drown out the "senior official cooperating" story but I don't think it's a hint of impending indictments. Then again, the administration may not know when the shit's going to hit the fan, so they may have a "treat" planned for every day between now and I-day...

Traffic is horrific all over town now. Even in places nowhere near the tunnel. I live on the complete opposite side of the city from the tunnels and I had to deal with traffic coming home form school today. :eyes:

I can't see any connection at all. First, there's no reason to think that Fitz is doing anything today. Second, even if he was, a terror alert involving the Baltimore tunnel would seem to be no more relevant than a terror alert involving a bridge in Omaha. Baltimore isn't DC and I can tell you that the alert in Baltimore hasn't impacted anyone in DC at all. Third, if the idea is to have story that pulls public attention away from something Fitz would do, a terror alert in Baltimore isn't going to trump indictments (or non-indictments) of administration officials. It would take an actual act of terror to do that...

Not making a lot of sense here. I am supposed to believe that "they" (the secret terra group working for the administration) has the ability to shut down a tunnel in Baltimore, but not the ability to figure out that its a story with a shelf life of a couple of hours at best and one that even on the same day of the indictments would disappear but on the day before is utterly irrelevant? Nope.

And can I quote you on the "If this doesn't work there will be a terror attack" line tomorrow?

20. I was at one of our local sandwich shops.

They had Faux News on TV. They were talking about the tunnel situation in Baltimore. The Faux anchor was interviewing by phone a rep. congressman from New Jersey who serves on the terrorism sub committee. He made a statement that if we knew why the terrorists would threaten a tunnel, we'd be ahead of them. Hell, I knew why terrorists would threaten an underwater traffic tunnel. All you have to do is blow up a truck in the tunnel. The tunnel fills with water. You kill as many people as possible to get attention.
