US rips Canada plan to ease marijuana laws
By Pablo Bachelet, Reuters, 10/10/2003

WASHINGTON -- John Walters, the White House's top drug policymaker, said yesterday Canada was a blemish in an otherwise successful effort by the United States to cut back illegal drug production in the Western Hemisphere.

"It is the one place in the hemisphere where things are going the wrong way," said Walters, the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He has been an outspoken critic of a proposed Canadian law to ease penalties for marijuana possession.

Walters told a Washington think tank that Canadians who have privately expressed concerns with the policies of Prime Minister Jean Chretien should make their objections public.

His statement came as Parliament was beginning debate on a bill introduced by the Chretien government that would end criminal penalties for possessing about half an ounce of marijuana.

sorry mod... just got too heavy. Mind you I have seen a lot more lenience on these board that you have shown, including profanity in the subject line, (which I would never do) so I am not sure where the lines are drawn. Things seem very inconsistent. Some of Skinner's mods are fairly lenient and others very strict. Cést la vie.

(waves at certain mod, cackles fiendishly)

I'm still kind of glum about this "no profanity in the first post" business. I thought Walters was one of our "political enemies," hence an exception.... and the last thread certainly didn't descend into flames or anything.

3. oh, good
I thought the thread was scrapped cause I suggested John Ashroft thinks that Jesus tells him to put people in cages over drug offenses. That seemed to me to be rather self-evident.

8. nahhhhhhhh
I understand the sentiment behind the no-cussin'-in-the-1st-post thing, but it seems so... I dunno, superficial. Goofy. Sunday schoolish.

and ironically in this case, derailed the discourse that the rule was supposed to encourage!

Just pointing out that I understand the rationale behind the rule, but don't agree with it.

But anyway, yes. Skinner's drones PMed me and stole my brain. Its locked somewhere in an abandoned sub-basement now. HELP!

13. ok ok ok
My apologies. I was really pissed off when I pulled it off the wire and my strongest reaction was F*** O**

I am not trying to tear a strip out of anyone here. I am just baffled by the obsurdity of the whole situation. Since the US slammed their 30 per cent softwood lumber tariffs on Canada, which has killed the tradition lumber economy, marijuana cultivation has become a larger export product in BC than softwood. Billions. I know, because last time I was there, some old friends were driving nice cars. And pot was a little sideline.

People are making an extra 40,000 to 50,000 dollars a year growing grass in their houses with new hydroponic technology and the government is overwhelmed. The police have pretty well given up because the present laws make it extremely complicated to bust people for growing and the petty busts are clogging the court systems.

The choice to get rid of 'petty pot' crimes and focus on the big growers and exporters is their way of cracking down on the trade, as they know America is pissed off that billions of dollars worth of 'bloody great weed' are being shipped south every year.

Oh by the way alot of the growing and cloning techniques were developed by American draft dodgers who came north from the US in the sixties and seventies to BC... or so the rumour says.

:)

16. but how can privatized prisons make money if pot is legal?
besides, Americans will watch Canada over the next few years and see that the country hasn't descended into utter chaos, and might- gasp - question some of our OWN drug laws!

we can't have that in these parts!!
