If drug addiction is a moral failing in Rush
is it one in the number of DUers who are addicts as well? I do know that one of the things being commented on is the hypocrisy of Rush but to some extent virtually all addicts are hypocrites. I certainly didn't extoll the virtue of drinking tons of booze to my students. This is one of the central problems liberals have with attacking people personally. It is utterly hypocritical to say Rush is immoral for abusing oxy cotten but that everyone else is ill. It also is lying but that is another story. There are many hypocrisies to attack Rush for. We don't need to turn ourselves into lying hypocrites to attack Rush.

1. I'd venture to say
everyone is addicted to something. Some things are just way more visible than others.

2. I'm uncomfortable with attacking him for his addiction...
...however, if he was obtaining the pills illegally, that's another matter.

That being said, addiction is a disease. You might as well pillory somebody for being diabetic.

Most addicts don't use a public forum to demonize and incite hatred
toward other addicts. Rush has. His hypocrisy makes him fair game.

3. Gee, I think the flabby coward's moral failing
was attacking people with a drug addiction problem without mercy to amuse his inbred clot of ignorant listeners.

"to some extent virtually all addicts are hypocrites."
So few addicts flaunt their hypocrisy on a nationwide radio program for years or try to influence public policy with hate and lies.

4. Rush the hypocrite
Rush the hypocrite

"Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country . . . And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."

5. his addiction has nothing to do with it
It is his hypocrisy and his lack of credibility that result from his addiction.

8. Well said, and to the point
His addiction is a sickness, and I dont criticize him for his illness. However, his illness doesn't excuse his hypocrisy, and for that, I criticize him.

6. Should a gay man stay in the closet and attack other gays?
Or should he be outed and called on the utter hypocrisy??

7. it's the hypocrisy
dsc. And that is what is being attacked, not his pill-popping. To question each time something negative is said about a repuke only serves their purpose.

9. By Rush's own ultra-conservative standards
he, as a drug user, is a person with a major moral failing.
So that's his problem.

I don't think he should expect any sympathy after all the hatered and intolerance he spews daily.

10. please explain your statement that
"virtually all addicts are hypocrits"

in case you haven't figured it out, what people are pointing out is rush's hypocricy, not his addiction. he has spent hours inveighing against others for the same thing he is doing.
sounds like you have a couple of really serious issues to deal with, and that is not the problem of the people on DU

11. Addicts lie to support their habit
Damn rare is the addict who says take drugs it is good for you. I will admit there are some but not very many. I have been there and know exactly what I am talking about.

12. of course addicts lie
to support their habit, that's part of the disease. I am not understanding your insistance on hypocrisy in this instance.

Rush has certainly criticized addicts for their moral failings. We can hardly fail to respond to that. Unfortunately, that's all too common among people who are suffering from addiction themselves. The morality finger can often stick you in the eye, as Rush may find out.

I despise Rush heartily, and everything he stands for. If he is indeed an addict, I have great compassion for his problem. However, I can have compassion for his disease, and still think he's a loathsome toad.

I'm really not sure what your point is.

13. Ten states and Canada have declared Marijuana "good for you"
at certain times if needed. Your statement is absurd on it's face because all "drugs" are not the same. Some may be devastating and some may just be enjoyable like coffee or sugar. There are literally millions of different "drugs" The ones Rush was reportedly on were the same ones my mother was on during her last days on earth before she died from ovarian cancer. It is a matter of abuse and not the drug itself. IMHO

14. It's like William Bennett's gambling
Hold yourself up as a judge of what's right and virtuous in the world, you'd better not have any skeletons in your own closet.

Hell, I've had friends who were big druggies, but they never presumed to lecture me on how I ought to live my life.
