1. I think Rush is trying to name his own punishment...
30 day rehabs are a joke. A judge would demand at least 90 days and would probably want six months of AA or NA attendance slips.

Rehab is supposed to be the entry into a new life of honesty. This, and his use of "program speak" to bolster his "liberals can't face the truth" hate speak today, make for an ominous start.

2. They have to...
They have to stand by their man. It is part of the loyalty oath.

If they abandoned him over this, that would be surprising.

The best thing we can do is to hope Rush heals, spiritually and physically. To be gleeful about catching another hypocrit in the GOP ranks denies the reality of a person trying to recover from an addiction.

Unfortunately, if we thought Rush was sanctimonious now, he'll be even worse if he kicks his habit.

7. Separate the Man from the Politics
Don't empathize with the blowhard, the hypocrit, or the arrogant schmuck, empathize and sympathize with the man who lost control of his life and pray/hope/wish that this process truly heals Rush and allows him to see the pain he has caused.

He has sown the seeds of hate and doesn't care about the bitter harvest we have to reap. If he is able to heal, then maybe he can begin to change what he was done.

I sincerely doubt he will be healed though. 30 days is great for a psychologically addictive substance, but for his habit he requires 90 days at the very least followed up by a AA/NA or some sort of program.

Anyone want to bet that the Church of Scientology is banging on his door as we speak?

26. I have no sympathy for him...
...none whatsoever. Sorry, there are too many disadvantaged or downtrodden people, not to mention ordinary folk, for me to have enough room in my heart to feel sympathy for some wealthy hateful whiny republican f0ker who got his hand caught in the cookie jar and now wants us to feel all sorry for him. I hope his withdrawl is so severe...well, use your imagination or substitute suitably disturbing scenes of detox from a movie.

5. Wolfy Blitzer is right now trying to rationalize Rush's addiction...
..and his guest said it should be treated as a 'chronic illness'.

- All this PR garbage after millions of the poor and minorities have been sent to prison because they couldn't afford 'treatment'.

- If nothing else...this shows the inequalities and unfairness of the 'war' on drugs. Rich and connected people seldom if ever are punished for THEIR addictions.

8. Do you disagree that it should be treated as an illness?
This is exactly what I want. This is the good that can come from this. I don't want user abusers thrown in jail. That is a waste. I want them to get help.

Rush sets a standard. We just can't allow them to parse a difference between pharmaceutical addiction and other substance addiction.

12. Drug addiction should be treated as a disease
but Limbaugh has been such an asshole by saying that druggies should be locked up for life, deported, or whatever, that it's impossible to feel any sympathy for him. I hope this helps him, but somehow I doubt it. Once an asshole, always an asshole, at least in this case.

23. He was asking this doctor whether Rush could "act rationally"
He was asking if people were able to "function normally", as if to try to get the doctor to justify that this venomous maniac wasn't ripped out his mind the whole time. The doctor fell for it, saying that yes people can function normally, but that often they say things that they would be more restrained in saying if not under the influence. Wolfe then said that that's why Rush must have said what he said about McNabb.

CNN is really terrible: Blitzer, Greenfield, Woodruff, Crowley. What are they thinking? They're not just biased they're boring.

10. Lookit this indignant twit
Carving out special victim status for Rush because he hoovered up prescription drugs, unlike immoral street junkies:
Shame on them. Shame on Al Franken for his contemptible chortling. Shame on the DemocraticUnderground.com for its disgusting mockery. Shame on Tony Norman for his hateful comments. Shame on the media for turning a medical issue into a political one.

Unlike recreational drug addiction, prescription painkiller addiction belongs squarely in the medical arena. Recreational drug addiction is just that -- recreational. A junkie first picks up marijuana, cocaine or heroin in order to have a good time. No one prescribes heroin for back pain. But for many who become addicted to prescription painkillers, the dealer who gets them hooked is their family doctor.

...

It is despicable how the media have equated prescription painkiller addiction with recreational drug addiction. There is a moral difference between the two types of addicts. All drug addicts deserve sympathy, but prescription painkiller addicts clearly deserve more sympathy than recreational users.

I cannot find one cite on the net of Rush discussing his back troubles before today. Even at freepland, there's only a couple of posters insisting they know they heard him talk about it sometime in the 90s, but getting no corroboration from others. He's bullshitting.

because although I loathe Rush and everything he stands for, I agree that prescription drug addiction is a medical misfortune.

But seriously - Ben Shapiro should pull his head out. "Shame on the media for turning a medical issue into a political one." If a famous liberal (let's say Tim Robbins) was in this situation, Shapiro wouldn't be saying a goddamned thing in his defense. So spare us the "shame on you" -- shame on ALL the right-wing media whores for their fascist double standards.

On a lighter note, check out this picture of Shapiro - I have the urge to stuff him in a locker.*

* Required disclaimer: I myself have been stuffed in a locker. But I didn't deserve it.

11. It's called professional courtesy
You will never hear a doctor bashing another doctor.

You will hear one lawyer bashing another when they are at adversarial roles against each other in a courtroom, but nowhere else.

Rush is a Big Cheese among professional broadcasters, even ones who hate his guts.

And I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them had some substance abuse issues of their own (remember Jessica Savitch, anyone?) or other skeletons in their closets.

34. No, I don't know what he said when Clinton apologized.
(But I'm sure it was obnoxious.) As the Mother of an addict , I can tell you this-unless he really wanted to go into rehab, and that would have been without having been part of a criminal investigation, this rehab is not his idea. This is his lawyer's idea. Trust me on this-I know. That is the first thing that a lawyer will advise. Get into rehab pronto, it looks real good to the judge and in this case, real good in the papers. Did you hear Drudge on "Buchanan and Press"? Christ Almighty, I thought Matt was delivering his eulogy! The reverential tone! The "make your producer empty his pockets, Bill. I'm sure you know someone on drugs like this!" Yes, Matt. Maybe we do know someone on drugs. I know I do. But my son never went around saying that anyone that does drugs deserves to be sent up the river. The whole time you were preaching to your choir, you were high. Karma is a bitch, you hypocritical son-of-a-bitch.
