Who is Bob Herbert, and why is he saying these things?

Krugman is the Times' current darling of the left, but Bob Herbert's been around for a long time. I started reading him seriously years ago when he was doing some great investigative work on criminal justice and the death penalty. A lot of activists have him on their speed dial.

Now, he's taken aim at Iraq, and he's not happy. He's still a reporter, not a pundit, and he's been hanging around the UN lately.
