My prayer for Rush Limbaugh
is the same as my prayer for myself. May he understand God's will in his life and do what he can to make it happen. From what I have read Rush is in for a very tough fight (two detoxes failing don't bode well). I have been sober since April of 2000 when I checked into detox and after five days left to complete an intensive outpatient program (I had mediocre insurance). Rush will be able to pay for the best treatment possible. But without surrender, which money can't buy, he will fail. Without his full acceptence that he is an addict, no different from me or any other addict, who is powerless over his drug of choice, he will fail. Being sober and working a program are work. That is why it isn't called playing a program.

Rush's statement seems fairly honest to me. Being honest doesn't mean disregarding lawyer's advice. He told the public what the public needs to know. He needs to be fully honest with himself. I hope he is. Of course only he knows if he has.

I won't revel in Rush's problems. Nor will I treat him differently from any other addict. I am proud of my involvment in service work in AA as I want to give back to a program that has saved my life. But I also know that helping addicts is what will keep me sober. Rush and I are unlikely to ever meet. But if we did, I would treat him live every other addict I know. I would shake his hand, introduce myself, and offer him whatever help to stay sober that I could give. That is what keeps me sober.

Money buys a lot of things. It may well have prevented him from hitting the bottom he needs to really understand what he is doing to his life. But money won't buy him recovery. It won't work his program. It won't kick his ass when he needs it, and listen to him when he needs that. Only someone who has been where he has been can do that for him. That is what will keep that person sober.

So flame me if you want. Revel if you want. But for me, I will pray Rush finds God's will in his life and does what he can to make it happen. That would be a win win situation I would think.

1. on the other hand
He's only doing this because he got caught, so his "honesty" pales somewhat in that light.

4. Yes
His "honesty" is only an attempt to lessen whatever legal penalties may lay in store for him. I would guess nothing. If an average dittohead did what Limbaugh did, that dittohead would be facing a long jail term. I won't hold my breath for that to happen to Limbaugh.

In fact, I hope it doesn't happen to Limbaugh. It will be another wealthy Floridian that gets off the hook while thousands of others live in prison cells that should never have been built for them. Maybe someday, there will be sane drug laws in this country for not only him and the others in his economic level, but for everyone.

As far as Pigboy's problems are concerned, he gets no sympathy from me. I don't believe in cursing people, but my hope is that karma gives him a good bitchslap and he wakes up.

But I would be a damn liar if I said I wasn't happy that evil bastard is going down in flames. He's been a boil on the ass of humanity for 15 years, and is largely responsible for the fucked up state our country is in. I hope he gets what he deserves--nothing more, but nothing less.

5. One of the first things you have to do...
To start recovery and the long walk towards sobriety, is get over yourself, or at least the illusions you have wrapped yourself with, like swaddling clothes. I know. Oh, how well I know.

That will be Pigboy's biggest battle, up until he starts doing his apologizing. He has a lot of that to do, apologizing. Tons. It'll be a new career.

By his past words and deeds, he has proven himself worthy of only damnation for his lies and hypocrisy. Under the so-cherished Old Testament dogma of the Religious Reich, he has earned only the fires of Hell.

I want to hear the Literalists who have blindly supported this IDIOT over the years suddenly begin applying the teachings of Jesus Christ (whom they have so roundly ignored for a thousand years) to this case.

Go ahead, lads, and try to be convincing!

Urine test the son of a bitch forever and ever.

Thanks.

Having got that out of the way, let me say that I don't share your religion. Yeah, you say "spiritual, not religious," but program ideology doesn't keep you sober. It's ultimately because you believe you can be sober. And that's OK. Your program isn't for everyone, and shouldn't be. There needs to be alternatives to 12 Step programs, becuase they DON'T work for everyone.

Nobody needs their ass kicked. Not even Limbaugh. He's got his reward/punishment already. And I'm grateful he's off the air, at least for now, and at least there's the opportunity for him to change. And yes, I'm very, very happy today, because the Wheel has turned.

I hope though that he actually does do a Lee Atwater, sees the error of his ways, and becomes a better person.

But thanks for your post; I will you well with your path, though it ain't mine.

64. how he feels about drugs.......some statements

"We're going to let you destroy your life. We're going to make it easy and then all of us who accept the responsibilities of life and don't destroy our lives on drugs, we'll pay for whatever messes you get into."
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec. 9, 1993

"I'm appalled at people who simply want to look at all this abhorrent behavior and say people are going to do drugs anyway let's legalize it. It's a dumb idea. It's a rotten idea and those who are for it are purely 100 percent selfish."
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec 9, 1993

"If (Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders) wants to legalize drugs, send the people who want to do drugs to London and Zurich, and let's be rid of them.
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec 9, 1993

"There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

"What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too."
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Oct. 5, 1995

29. As someone with 15 yrs. sobriety, here's my take:
If Rush, or anyone, sincerely asked for my help, I am obliged to give it. I am also obliged to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, today, on the eve of his entry into rehab, Rush no less than twice used Program Speak to elevate himself and put down what he calls liberals. I am perfectly well allowed to find that obnoxious behavior. Were I there, I would have called him on it instantly, just as I would if anyone did that anywhere including an AA meeting.

So Rush can come to any meeting he wants and he can expect a warm welcome. But if he thinks he can game the rules like he has everywhere else, he should know that we have seen his type come and go and come and go. In my mind, he’s just a garden-variety drunk.

31. My favorite parts about Rush's apology were...
1) how he was already feigning humility...to paraphrase, I don't want anyone to pat me on the back when this is all done

2) ranting about how "the truth" would eventually come out.

So, instead of a heart-felt apology I see this as some sort of ploy to garner sympathy for himself. Would that all those Rush has wronged over the years have a drop of the sympathy Rush is getting from his minions. And while addicted to pain killers (he admits this addiction is nothing new), he has no doubt broadcast countless times about the minority drug dealers that are so evil. Maybe if Rush Limbaugh was sincerely apologetic I will have more sympathy for him.

33. Every word you say is the truth.
We can’t elevate ourselves by pounding Rush. Human nature is what it is so condemning Rush for his hypocrisy just can’t be avoided, but let’s be the evolved side of this debate.

Rush should suffer the criminal penalties for his crimes because he doesn’t have a prayer in recovery unless there are some real consequences. A year or so in a Club Fed might make him come to terms with the fact that is just an ordinary, pathetic addict. Once he realizes that he is a frail mortal maybe insight will follow or maybe not, but either way he will have suffered the reality that is addiction, and will never be able to condemn an addict again.

It is hard to forgive or understand how someone who has caused so much harm, but unless we do we have reduced ourselves to them.

43. There is a difference between forgiveness and understanding.
Rush let his hate consume him, very nearly literally. He aided and abetted the hate of millions of people, he failed to use his influence for good, encouraged policies that caused misery, every thing Rush stood for was to appeal to the ugly core of human nature. He gave people permission believe and act in a way that avoided compassion, he made bigotry and loathing righteous.

How can we awaken the part of the American psyche that used to understand the complexity of human nature if we adopt Rush’s vitriol? Rush personifies the hypocrisy of the right, perhaps we should personify what is wrong with their twisted view.

It isn’t necessary that we forgive Rush. If he comes out of this spewing the same lies and venom as before then we should attack in kind. Maybe, just maybe, he will learn something, that pride does come before the fall, but we don’t know yet

53. Do you think that we will win the hearts
and minds of the majority if what we offer is contempt? Rush has acted despicably, horribly he is exactly what is wrong with this country. Who gives a damn about him? We need to demonstrate that there is more to us that hating what we oppose; the world is truly a complex place. Our leaders really are greedy liars, but is useless to hate them, it consumes your soul. The only thing that matters is doing what is right to change the way things are, the only thing.

There is one person on this planet who you can control. Control her, work for change. Work for justice, pray that Rush learns the truth. If Rush finds out why he hates himself maybe he can also be a force for good.

86. I'm with you...
people like Rush gloat over scenes like these...

Let him suffer. Sympathy for him is a waste of breath and energy. He had the money and resources to get help for himself a long time ago, and only came clean because he was caught, period, end. Why anyone here has pity for him is beyond my comprehension. Nice sentiment, but misplaced...

If all we have to offer is a different flavor of hate how will we accomplish what needs to be done?

Isn’t the point that we want to reintroduce reason to the political debate? There is more to our side than being the antiRepublicans, at least there is from my perspective.

Rush, the GOP, spineless Dems and anyone who voted for Bush are responsible for every dead child, every dead soldier and every wounded human being in this illegal war..They are my enemies, everyone of them. I have not an ounce of sympathy for them, they want to deploy my son and murder him overseas for their war, and they have already killed other peoples children for their fraudulent war built on lies.

Im sorry honey, But Rush Limbaugh is in rehab for drugs and even tho you are dead thanks to his promotions of Bush's illegal war, we should pray for his sorry ass.

There are so many people in this world who can not afford the care Rush will now be receiving. He'll get the best money can buy. I'll save my prayers for people who are truly suffering and cant get a helping hand in this world. This rich loud mouth hypocrite can. He didnt even have the "character" (his favorite topic!) to come clean on his own. He had to be "outed" by his maid. I feel sorrier for her, then I do him, imagine what this guy put HER through to keep his habit going. God should show him the same mercy he has shown others, none.

By wishing evil on Rush, we're only dragging ourselves into the gutter with the rest of the slimeballs. It saddens me to see DUers, who claim to be "compassionate" where the rightwingers are not, showing such a complete lack of compassion.

Harboring this hatred for him is not good for us, either. It gets into your soul, and rots away at you like a cancer. It turns you into the same kind of monster that you despise in Rush-- or the Freepers for that matter.

No, I don't like him, or his politics, or his show(s), or much else about him. However, he is a human being, and as such deserves at least a little sympathy for his plight.

If he were to ask for forgiveness for his actions, I would forgive him, but I would also hold him accountable for his actions and ask him to repay society in the same way he harmed it. And we don't know what will happen once he kicks the monkey off his back. Opiates are very hard to quit, and have a high relapse rate. Maybe this round will take, maybe it won't. Only time will tell.

71. dsc and junkdrawer
Both very provocative posts. I tend to rather prefer Junkdrawer's take on it, but both are very provocative.

I can't find it in my heart to be quite so charitable. That man has done an enormous amount of harm to this country. And at the risk of assessing someone else's program, his list of amends has got to be a Guinness Record Breaker. Let's see if he comes to understand that.

My bet is he won't even do the Program, not really.

I think it's also worth noting that while often overlooked, power and money are also addictions. Workaholism too. And, of course, the underlying cause of ALL addictions is Codependence.

Thanks for these two posts. Definitely provocative -- and all the more meaningful (and authoritative) coming from people who are actually working their programs.

Eloriel

I just got back from a meeting. I like to think that AA has given me a different and less vindictive take on life than I otherwise would have. I still lose it from time to time but I don't hold grudges like I used to. Rush has his work cut out for him. Fame and money are terrible barriers to a successful program. For every Martin Sheen there is a whole host of Robert Downey Jrs. I used to envy the likes of those but now I know that sobriety is more important than that and I will take what I get when I get it.

81. Thanks. Look, the AAs and NAs here are charitable for two reasons...
1.) Our program demands it

But also...

2.) The people with a stretch of hard-won sobriety know for a fact that either El Rushbo learns true honesty and humility, or he dies a death you wouldn't want to wish on a dog.

I think that much of the hate is because most here think that Limbaugh will skate and that in 30 days Limbaugh will be back more powerful than ever. Nope. Limbaugh changes or goes down in flames like Joe McCarthy.

"On a daily basis, on average, 10 Americans die by drowning, and nine Americans die by fire in their homes. 14 Americans die by pedestrian accidents. 27 Americans die in falls. On average, 50 Americans a day are murdered. 118 die in auto accidents, and 25 people die from AIDS every day, on average. Yesterday, two Americans died in battle in Iraq." — Rush Limbaugh belittling the casualty count as so low....why should we care?

I am sure that there are quite a few DUers themselves who have had drug/alcohol problems themselves. To judge someone else by conduct that they themselves have gone through smacks of the worst hypocrisy possible.

Rush has said a lot of hateful things on the air. And he has been horrible to people. What he did to Donovan McNabb was wrong and inappropriate.

I do hope that in therapy Rush can see what he has done to other people. I do know, however, that it takes strength and dedication to get through it.

I don't know if Rush has that.

But he won't waste any energy feeling sorry for him or even saying a prayer for him, either. It is a matter that he is essentially "done with it".

I'm enjoying Fat Boy's embarrassment and any he brings to those who promote him. I could care less about the pain he may face because he has been a political instrument that brought pain upon others with reich-wing policies.

But most of all, I'll be really happy if he nevers comes back on radio or tv.

84. That's nice of you, and it's your opinion
but I think Limbaugh is a phoney baloney sack of horse crap who came clean only because he was caught, and may very well slip back into addiction while suffering NO CONSEQUENCES- as in job loss, disgrace, jail time, etc.

-While average Joes and Janes everywhere who are caught with a couple of pills or a bag of weed get the boom lowered on them by the penal system.

It's hypocrisy and class warfare at it's finest.

If he really wants to impress me, let him resign from his show. Let him donate money and time to help the people he hurt with his acid tongue. I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen, I can assure you.

He verbally assaulted all sorts of down-and-out people over the years and I just figure this is karma. Had he not been such an enormous ass I might have actually wished him well, but that is impossible for me. The SOB can't suffer enough in my opinion.
