As the river of life flows along and we with it, we all learn to observe those landmarks along the banks that bind us to the shore, offering safe harbor and the comforts of home. For me, Rush Limbaugh has long been such a marker. As a Conservative, frequently alienated from popular culture and subject to the hostility directed to those such as myself, Rush Limbaugh was a Rock, a lighthouse shining through the fog of Liberalism. I felt that way in 1989, when I first heard him on the air, and I feel that way today.


Of course, I knew that many people shared my values when Ronald Reagan was elected -not once, but twice- yet, as odd as it may seem today, conservative voices were not often heard publicly in the 1980’s, as the television and radio airwaves were still dominated by Liberals. Today, I no longer feel alone. I am daily aware of many who share my ideas- on the radio, and on the Internet. And a major contributor to the tidal change in our culture between then and now was a failed disc jockey by the name of Rush Limbaugh.


Rush was something new: brash and outspokenly conservative, but also humorous and light-hearted. I did not always agree with him, nor do I now. Reasonable people may disagree about much in life. Yet Rush gave voice to those of us who felt shunned, almost guilty about being Conservative, even though we believed with all our minds that we were right. I recall still the joy of discovering the voice of a kindred spirit, unrelentingly positive and enthusiastic, never surrendering to the fear and delusions of the moment, but instead offering ideas and hope and laughter as an antidote to the infantile Leftism which has grown even more dour and hostile since those times. He is also directly responsible for the popularization of modern Conservatism, and by extension, for the proliferation of message centers like the one you are now visiting.


No matter what fortune becomes him, I will always love the man for that.


So as events now turn, Rush Limbaugh has reveled himself as, well, Human. He is flawed, imperfect, capable of considerable self-deception and occasionally weak in the face of moral and physical challenges. So am I. Who among us is not? To my knowledge and experience, Rush been a font of strength and good will on most public occasions. As he has demonstrated repeatedly during his 15 years on the radio airwaves, he is frequently capable of perspicacity, humor, empathy and great wit. How many of us could so perform, repeatedly, spontaneously, in the known presence of Millions?


Rush knows he is responsible for his actions, and has stated that responsibility, rather than shirking it, or choosing to blame it on the vicissitudes of fortune or the wiles of others. I was saddened to hear of his addiction and his pain, and I was heartened that he publicly proclaimed himself neither a Victim nor a Fool. He asked for no sympathy and begged no understanding. He stated his condition and his situation and offered no excuse. I wish him well and pray for his recovery. I owe him that much - and more.
