Rush Limbaugh doesn't deserve your pity.
Do I sound overly harsh? Should I now acquiesce, make nice, maybe start praying for him?

No I don't think so.

"There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

"What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too."

Rush Limbaugh, October 5, 1995

(thanks nu_duer for digging this gold up)

This is what they call hypocrisy. Do you think he would have copped to any of this if he wasn't right about to be busted? It is not forgivable. He should have the same book thrown at him that he himself advocates.

He has found himself on the wrong side of the drug war he so assiduously pushed on us. Isn't that justice?

1. I don't feel sorry for him at all.
I hate a hypocrite. And Rush can afford the best care the world has to offer, unlike most of those he was so eager to send up the river. I know he won't, but I hope he goes to prison.

4. Good, because I'm not giving him any...
Shit, wasn't Herr Goebbels a drug freak, too?

I'm adding pigboy to my schtick...

"Friends, have you ever looked at the grill on the end of a microphone...I mean REALLY looked at it? Did you know you can see...What? No, I DON'T want anymore coffee...Folks, Bo Snerdly has gotten it into his head that El Rushbo here needs sobering up or something....Wow.....Have you ever noticed how these suspended acoustical ceilings breath when they think you're not looking at them?...What?...."

Instead of that Chrissy Hinds riff he's been using for his theme he should use Willie's "Just a lil' ol'-fashioned Karma comin' down"....

5. My bottom line
I do not wish addiction or recovery on anyone.

I AM NOT glad he is battling drug addiction.

I AM glad his ego is taking a few downward clicks.

I WOULD BE glad if he faced the same prosecution for illegally obtained drugs that the rest of us would, and I WILL BE pissed off if he doesn't face ANY criminal consequences over it.

But I know too much about addiction recovery. It hurts people who have real souls, so I'm not too worried about Rush.

AM I jumping up and down - 'yay, our side is winning !' - no. I'd rather retain my class, thank you.

Spinning this as some kind of vindication of my political beliefs doesn't fly with me and plays into the other side's venomous rhetorical traps.

I'm just as right and he's just as wrong without taking glee in knowing he's facing some painful days. I take him no more seriously now than I did before.

I'll speak up if he gets a legal slap on the wrist and I hear him later lambasting the drug rehab/criminal gestalt.

What's the old saying?

A liberal is a conservative who just got busted.

8. A couple years ago
Premier of Alberta Ralph Klein was drunk, walked in to a homeless shelter, started throwing change around and saying "Here take this and get a job!" Naturally the shit hit the fan;....how was it quelled you ask?

He had his P-R people start in on a "Poor Ralphy has a drinking problem" bit...worked to, this is a typical way to avoid responsibility

10. Give Rush the same compassion he showed others alike to himself.
Prison, its more than tough love, its tough luck.

Really, I hope Rush recovers, he has lost a lot, maybe his hearing. A high price to pay.

I do hope he quits lying for the sake of conservativism. But, therein lies one addiction I don't think he'll overcome -- money.

12. Every human being *deserves* pity
But that doesn't mean they are going to get it.

Rush will walk away from this unscathed, believe it. Not one word have I heard about his previous statements about drug addicts in the media (but I haven't been paying that much attention, either).

Already, he is being portrayed as a "victim".

Already, his dittodolts are making excuses for him.

He'll be back!

14. It seems to me all this hatred of Rush
is based on the assumption he believes what he says. What if he was just a cynical con man with no real convictions other than a lot of people enjoy hearing what he has to say and he can make a lot of money off of it? What if he just had a pathological need for attention, saw an audience, and made things up to suit that audience? Wouldn't that sort of change things?

Sure, he promotes hate and lies, and yes, he rallies and gives a voice to the stupids and the pretend-thinkers. But wouldn't they still be there and be just as wrong without him? Is he worth the emotional investment in hating him? I don't think so.

What if he likes the criticism and hatred just as much as the dittos? What if it makes him feel even more powerful? Isn't it better, in that case, to ignore him? I don't mean in the sense of doing nothing and hoping he'll go away, but of reducing the amount of thought space he occupies.

16. I didn't see the word "hate" anywhere in this thread
I just don't think anyone cares a flying fig what happens to him, nor does anyone feel any compassion. I don't think anybody cares enough about him to "hate" him. I know I don't.

Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh once told a black caller to "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

22. Please don't dismiss Rush as being unimportant
I have seen this in a few posts above. Limbaugh has been as important to the Right Wing in this country as Goebbels was in Nazi Germany. Hell, he's probably reveling in all the attention that he's getting lately, knowing full well that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

If he is, indeed, "addicted to prescription pain relievers," I'm sure he will be glad to show us the prescriptions.

Why am I suddenly hearing "Sympathy For The Devil?"

26. Just remember
Addiction is an illness (a spiritual illness as much as a physical one, but an illness nonetheless).

All the hypocrisy, grandiosity and pomposity, etc., are part of that illness.

No, that doesn't mean I have much sympathy for him. He's done a lot of harm to this country -- probably more than anyone else in our history with the possible exception of GWBush who probably wouldn't have been possible without a Rush Limbaugh.

But it does occur to me that citing symptoms of his illness (hypocrisy, etc.) as the reason we don't have sympathy for him is a little off base.

28. well it didn't seem like hypocrisy
during his years of grandstanding on this exact subject. such denunciations have been his stock and trade for years.

as someone who recovered from a hard drug addiction just a few years ago (and having never advocated the persecution of fellow addicts), i feel more than qualified to judge his statements and actions here.

i do not consider this particular hypocrisy to be a symptom of his illness. rather the reverse—the illness is just one manifestation of the larger hypocrisy.

36. I'm going to be on tenterhoooks in 30 days
While driving around on errands toady, I was listening to yet one more radio talk show about Rush. The host was discussing it from the drug addiction angle. He was asking people if Rush deserved our sympathy.

As has been discussed, it's not about the drugs. I believe that's a smoke screen. It's about knowing that the personal delivery of his evil gospel is off the air for four weeks.

During his show on Friday, he commented that Medicare is unecessary because people got along fine without it in the past. Right to the bloody end he was pedalling a corrosive message. Like some dark angel reaching out to drag souls down to hell as he was being sucked down to haedes himself.

So, sympathy has naught to do with Rush in the light of today. I'm scared of the day he comes back to the microphone and takes it back up more credible to his faithful than ever. I'm saving my sympathy for his victims.
