Muslim girl is told to take her scarf off at school in Oklahoma City
THE ACLU should be jumping on this. This is totally WRONG. This girl isn't allowed to wear her head scarf. By the way, women aren't forced to wear it (except in some countries). But most women wear it voluntarily.

The dress code was put in place in 1997 to prevent people from wearing caps and headwear. However, the purpose of the rule is not to PREVENT ONESELF FROM PRACTICING THEIR RELIGION. That rule was put in for a different reason.

2. Mennonite prayer covering
Reading this story makes me want to look into the school dress code regarding headgear in Lancaster County where I live. Conservative Mennonite girls have always worn prayer coverings to school.

3. ridiculous
I dont think that the school has any right to ask this woman to dress a certain way.

OTOH, Turkey (a muslim country) mandates that women NOT wear the head scarf in government buildings...

go figure...

Ppl might find her headscarf offensive(especially homosexuals) and the rules are the same for everyone.

I dont see jews wearing those small hats either.

9. Forgive me for being dense...
But why would homosexuals, in particular, find a woman's head scarf offensive? That makes absolutely no sense.

Also yarmulkas are not generally worn by Jewish men on all occasions, anyway.

I fail to see how a headscarf, worn as part of a religious tradition, can be "offensive" to anyone.

14. because
Their religion is offensive to them.

A headscarf is a symbol of that religion.

15. You did say that !
Just how does that work?

Thankfuly federal law is clear and states that religous wear is allowed in schools. And I have nothing against the Hare Krishna or their right to exersise their beliefs, so, unlike you, I would have no problem with a youngster in school in a safron robe.

And I thought I was on Democratic Underground...

6. Every girl in the whole school should show up wearing a scarf on Monday.
Like in WW2, every person, including the king, showed up wearing a yellow star of David armband like the Jews were forced to wear.

7. To have ultimate secularism in the school, I believe, is not good
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 09:29 AM by La_Serpiente
I think people should be allowed to practice their religion in school. We have racial diversity...it will also open people up to other religions and give other religions respect, I believe. And frankly, I know that homosexuals wouldn't be offended to the scarf. We just don't like religoius bigots. I would know, trust me. ;-)

8. Just think, they won't have to worry about this girl showing up
in a bare midriff and mini-skirt outfit. Muslim women are supposed to be modest.

12. Education
Whats the freeper take on this issue? Will the righteous right defend the right to defy a school dress code when applied to a Muslim? Had to have seen this one coming. The school board has to remain firm on this to make an acception opens the door for further insanity.

18. There are a number of evangelical christians in my town
women and girls who use little hats and wear long skirts...Betcha a dime to a donut they arent hassled for one minute by the schools here. If this girl wasnt a muslim, I doubt the school would whine about it.

19. What about a crucifix around the neck?
Could you imagine the outcry if the girl was christian and was forced to remove some Jesus-oriented article?

You'd think the high school would be happy that one of their girls isn't trying to dress like a cheap hooker. A head scarf? Come on!
