Rush Limbaugh doesn't deserve your pity - but you should give it anyway
Because we're not, in theory, as bad as Rush is in his mercilessness and pitilessness and ridicule. In theory, we're better than that. But most importantly becuase compassion that stops first to size up and evaluate the relative worth of the object of compassion really isn't compassion at all. Compassion has more to do with your heart than it does the object of compassion. And mercy is mercy specifically because it is bestowed irregardless of the worth of the receiver.

3. Well stated
but for me it is both more simple and more necessary. I am in a save your own ass program. If I start choosing which addicts are worthy of help and which ones aren't I stop saving my own ass. All addicts are saved by grace which be definition is bestowed without regard to deserving.

At the same time I will excoriate him ruthlessly for his utter hypocrisy and lies these last 5 years.

He is still the same asshole who brought the politics of division and incivility to the table and I will not forgive or forget that.

6. I respect you and what you are saying
I think that now that the initial fury has passed, you will begin to see more reasoned dialogue, rather than what was circulating yesterday. I admit that I contributed to it myself, but upon much reflection, I started thinking about the origins of my perspectives. I fully support the compassion you advocate, and would do so for any one who is addicted to anything. My problem with Limbaugh is not his substance addiction, it is with his broadcast hatred and his defiling of everything I consider to be socially just and good. Just when I think that he has done as much damage as he can, he manages to come up with something new and even more outrageous. The fact of the matter is this: all of our discussions about him getting cleaned up are probably going to be moot anyway. When I cleaned up, I was told not to expect any 'miracles'. because I was 40 at the time. Apparently, people who attempt it after 40 are less likely to be successful in their endeavors. I was lucky. I had a great deal of support from people I didn't know prior to getting sober, and I am grateful to all of them. I will support Limbaugh's efforts, and will try very hard not to judge him (not my place anyway); however, it will be a very difficult road for him to accept his helplessness and begin to change his behaviors.

8. You make some good points
And as I said in an earlier post, while I hope he gets the help he needs to recover from his addiction, his action prior to his drug problem and during the years of his drug problem have infected our society with some of the ugliest of political landscapes and contributed mightily to the incivility of political discourse. That portion has NOTHING to do with his drug habit and he is still an asshole who will live the life of luxury after all is said an done.

I have compassion for him on the single issue of his drug addiction, but it does not erase or make up for what he has done to this country. I would still spit on him as soon as look at him because of he is an utterly vile and detestable person, regardless of his current problems.

14. Justice would be for him to face exactly what he advocated for...
...other drug users.

I don't agree with him. I believe that drug addiction and misuse should be treated as a medical issue and not a criminal one. On the other hand, I cannot forget that he is a very big proponent of minimum sentences and no mercy for people struggling with addiction.

And as it currently stands, that is the law of the land and he undermined our every effort to change that.

It is said that he that soweth the wind shall reap the whirlwind. Never has that been more true.

28. no mercy for the bad if they want it
You said what I was thinking. Rush was on the news saying "he did not want to be seen as a victim" as if that is the issue. Wouldn't we always say that addicts should get help rather than condemnation? Rush cannot figure out that his option - expensive rehab - is not available to non-rich people. Instead the state spends billions of dollars to persecute, prosecute and jail us.
Since Rush is the one who is in favor of jail for addicts - he should get what he favors for others in his situation. The state should spend a few million dollars trying to send him to jail. Yes, Rush we will have as much sympathy for your problems as you have for ours. You want sympathy Rush, it is in the dictionary between shit and syphilis. Let your own glass house be shattered by the stones you have thrown.

30. I don't think Rush should go to jail for his being an addict
but, then, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ELSE SHOULD EITHER...so until everybody has to submit to the same standard that Rush proposes to be criminality and forced alteration, he can submit to the "relaities" of the consequences of his actions.

And, once again, the only reason we are discussing this is because he got CAUGHT.

78. Rush's redemption and recovery are entirely dependent on doing hard time
Rush beleives that drug addicts are a cancer on society and must pay their dept in prison and be let out when and if they are solid in recovery. Rush will never be truly in recovery until he pays that price. For him to do anything less is to hold to the fantasy that he is somehow different than a Crack or Heroin addict.

I hope he gets sent away for a long while... but he won't he is a rich white guy. Sadly for him that very fact will allow him to go along being a cancer on society until he dies of an overdose.

I harbor this hope because Rush Limbaugh is a cruel and destructive man. I don't want him to get better and go back to doing his thing. I want him to stop spreading hatred and lies.

If he can stop doing those things that AND get better at the same time, fine. But if it's one or the other, I say to hell with Rush Limbaugh.

Call me small minded, but I don't see why I should root for a man who will only go back to kicking people in the face when he's able to.

18. I didn't engage in the bash Rush fest
not because I don't think he deserves it, but because I don't have the time too worry about someone who is a hate spewing gasbag and who knows the hateful untrue things he spews cause great pain and serve no other purpose than to divide Americans on many levels. I have no pity for him just as he has display time and again no pity for others who have fallen prey to drug addictions.

Here is an article from a newsletter my Dad is co-editor of:

Rush on Drug-Users in 1995: 'Convict them and Send Them up the River'

"When you have a talk-radio show 15 hours a week, you have an awful lot of air to fill. On this particular day, which was Oct. 5, 1995, Rush was roaring about the scourge of illegal drug use. Even though blacks and whites break the drugs laws in roughly equal percentages, he noted, black druggies go to prison far more often than white druggies do. But to the liberal-bashing host, this was no reason to ease up on blacks. "What this says to me,' he told his listerners that day, 'is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drugs sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too." 'Including zillionaire radio hosts? Well, maybe not."

I'll save my compassion for those addicted to drugs who clearly want help, for those who seek treatment for their addiction because they want to put an end to their addictions.

Rush would still be taking those drugs if his housekeeper did not outted him. He would still be ranting on about "black druggies and white druggies" and what should happen to them. He is the worst kind of hypocrite.

Before I give that scumbag one ounce of pity he has to EARN it. Where the hell has he earned any pity from anyone?

I'll never forget when that flaming gas bag claimed after "Take your daughter to work day" that it was a day brought on by the Feminazi's that only served one purpose,it let these women go to work and goof-off all day because they had their daughters with them.

As a husband with a wife and three daughters I was offended and unbelievably pissed off. If only you could reach through the radio. So now this blow hard deserves pity??

23. I agree with the concept...
and it is a basic belief of mine that compassion does not have to be "earned." Nor does forgiveness. Redemption, however, does.

So here's what I'm giving pigboy-- squat.

I don't want him to suffer any more than anyone else. I don't want to gloat over his problems. I don't revel or rejoice in his imminent downfall, although I might snicker a little.

But, he is still the narcissistic hatemonger he always was, and disease or addiction has nothing to do with that. That he may have other problems doesn't negate what he represents.

So, I give him nothing. His problems don't affect me one way or the other. I simply refuse to care.

Unlike so many others, he has the resources to heal himself, as he preaches. Let him do that and leave me alone.

24. As a person in recovery I have to put aside resentment
and say a prayer for this assholes recovery. Alcolholism and drug addiction is a disease and a favorite saying of mine to a newcomer is "that most (most) of us are sick people hoping to get better, not bad people" However some of the sick people are BAD people and even sober they will not be good people but the chances are that if you wholly embrace a 12 step program, and I mean wholly embrace which would entail eliminating about 99.9% of this man's rhetoric then he would probably end up being a very nice person, also that means changing only one thing, "everything". Time will tell, because if he claims he is sober and still spews the nasty, resentment causing rhetoric we will all know that he is not in "recovery", why do you think it has not helped the last 2 times, probably hasn't wanted to change that "one" thing.

Don't empathize with the RW, defeat them. They deserve exactly the same treatment they give others – they need to be marginalized, intimidated & kicked out of office by all means required to regain control of the country.

This isn’t a game, it’s a culture war and you don’t win wars worrying about how the other side feels regarding your tactics. How many more people have to die overseas, how many more rights do you have to lose before you wake up?

Don’t just look at the next election, look at the whole picture- we need to stop more than Bush, we need to stop the entire RW agenda. It has to ripped out of the soil of our society by the root and discredited to the point that no one will admit the are a conservative. That mean more than Bush, it means more than Rush Limbaugh… it means the guy next door and your RW relatives too. Every one of them needs to be verbally 'kicked in the ass' any time they open their mouths to poison the air with their anti-democratic messages. These people are freaks, and they do this again and again- look at the 50’s, the Palmer raids in the 20’s, the Great Depression.

You don’t argue with social cancer- you cut it away from the body politic.

I wish that Rush would never be taken seriously in the political arena ever again - that he would be a libility to conservatives who would shun him, and a laughing stock to everyone else. I wish that his career in political-entertainment would be finished.

At the same time, I wouldn't wish drug addiction on anyone, and I'm sad that this is the way it came about. I fear that Rush may be very unlikely to make a recovery becuase I've heard that the older your are the harder it is to recover from addiction. I don't have malicious feelings towards Rush. I don't desire vengence or his constant torture. I wish he would get the help he needs for his addiction, and perhaps through that process take a long hard look at himself. And then I wish he could settle down and live a quiet life in whatever what he feels is best, far, far, far away from the public arena.

I don't hate Rush - rush's life makes me incredibly sad. It is the tragedy of what is possible when you're driven by anger, hatred, fear, selfishness and insecurity instead of love and compassion. This is part of the reason why I very much do not want to approve of myself feeling the emotions of anger or hatred. Because in my opinion, regardless of whatever political views you hold, it only leads to a life like Rush's in the end.

46. Who are you to tell DUers what we should do?
As I've said on other threads, I have no compassion for a man who has made his living by trying to destroy the lives of others with lies/bigotry.

47. I'm free to give my opinion, and evaluate yours - same as you :)
And by the way, as long as there continue to be threads started giving the opinion that no better and more decent qualities should be shown towards Rush, I'll continue to provide my counter opinion.

"you should give (Rush) your pity", you're not expressing an opinion. Apparently you can't discern the difference between expressing an opinion and telling people what they should do. Welcome to my ignore list!

I might lose a son in 13 days to that godforsaken war...the one Rush screamed about as being a just invasion..
I hope Rush rots in his own hatred. the Blood of all the dead and wounded soldiers is on his hands. as is the Blood of every child who dies in Iraq.

62. We must love our enemies
This is something that baffles Republicans. We have to be able to rise above them and do this, because it's something that, to the pubbies' surprise, Americans like. It's also the right thing to do.

So I hope Rush recovers. After he does, I hope he turns over a new leaf and helps others recover. I don't care whether it's politically expedient for him to waste away and die or not.

64. I do pity Rush...
If only for a few moments at a time, because then a news program will air his self-serving admission of being addicted to prescription medication for his back pain, and I hear the obvious lies of omission. After that reality comes back into focus and I recognize the same fat ass mofo who has been encouraging mouthbreathing bigots & hypocrites in this country for more than a decade!

He's supposed to go to rehab for 30 days... thirty days?!! He won't be rehabilitated after such a short length of time; he's only going because he got caught, not because he reached his "rock bottom", or because he experienced some kind of epiphany.

Liberals, of all stripes, and the rest of America deserve my pity for having to live in an atmosphere poisoned by Rush and his RW co-conspirators.

74.  On the contrary thats exactly what freepers want- your pity
They want you to feel sorry for him. They want an excuse for his behavior. They want to sweep it under the rug. They want a way out, after years of repeating "ditto" to a junkie. Its embarrassing for them.

I spoke with a Rush supporter, last night. Ive never heard so many excuses in my life, including it was the "liberal media's" fault. I just had to ask him if Clinton tied Rush down and forced him to take drugs. Thats how ridiculous the conversation was. Keep in mind, the Rush Conversation started after this guy spent half the evening boasting about the "Republican's big win" in California. They love to talk about that, but Rush? Lovely watching them squirm.

For those who want to show real compassion for those struggling with drug addiction, I suggest spending some time volunteering at a drug rehab center or give money to people you know that have to decide between medication or food. If you're in a real charitable mood,
you could join the cry in at Free Republic, I suppose.

Rush has been given much in this life, what he chose to do with that is his responsibilty. And like everyone in life he has to face up to the consequences.

This isnt about hating anyone, its about laughing at the hypocrisy of the whole situation. After years of listening to him bash the "character" of others, we find out what a "character" he is. I dont worry about Rush, his money will take care of anything he needs & his party will find an excuse for anyhing he's done.

"WHAT WILL WE TELL THE CHILDREN?" Mary Bono on the Clinton Impeachment. Wonder what the republicans are telling their children now? I guess Dopers, Gropers, & Liars are ok, as long as they are republicans.

73. Admirable position
But what will it serve if I "give" him some compassion? He's miles away from me, my compassion will do him no good.

In the meantime, I'm thinking about justice. I'm thinking a vile, disgusting, hateful human being should be getting what he deserves. He should be sent up the river, to steal a phrase of his. He should have his ass kicked every day by the very people he showed no compassion towards, and then butt raped by large inmates. He should get everything that he's said that people in his position should get. I want him to go to prison, I want him to suffer greatly.

But that isn't to say that I would deny compassion and help if he were to ask for it. I don't claim to be Jesus, nor do I want to even try to be. That still makes me "better than that", a phrase you used in your original post. I won't deny compassion and help to those who ask for it, he does and revels in it.

BTW, this does not mean that my compassion and help is only for those who ask for it. I offer it freely...to those in my life. I'll even show pity for those who are not in my life if they are good people. But I will not show pity for those who are hateful and dispicable. No compassion for those who laugh at compassion like its a weakness. No help for those who have tried their damdest to deny help to those who need it most.

Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 01:30 PM by MODemocrat
Whenever he is ready to apologize to Chelsea Clinton, the elderly, the people of different color, other drug addicts, and the dissent he has caused in this country, etc., etc., etc., then, maybe I'd have compassion for him because I'd feel that just maybe he was repenting.
Until then, his sympathy/compassion will have to come from his undyiing followers. :nopity: :spank:

76. Forgive, even though he still hates you.
There was some person doing the talk show circuit a while back and the book had to do with forgiveness. The gist was that you should confront the people who have hurt you and tell THEM that YOU forgive them. Even when an apology from them would come after Hell freezes over.

Well I think forgiveness is a sacred thing. It cheapens and demeans one of the most basic and beautifull of human acts if the person that has done wrong does not care, and has the victim giving him a free pass.

For campassion to become involved in the case of Rush, his atrocities are long and sick. How many people has he hurt? How many individuals like gays, homeless, and DRUG ADDICTS have been the topic of his hate? How many people that listen to him parroted his twisted views that caused pain and despair between their families and friends.

Instead, he goes to the well, the one he draws on every day to confess his "issue". There was and probably be no apology to anyone that was the topic of hate. Only the apology to the gang that make up his audience, and that is on a conditional basis. A doctor did it, my back hurt, a tubby tot in the land of pharmaceutical chutes and ladders that did not know any better with all the bright and shiny tablets.

He will NOT apologize to the people he has hurt, he will not give an inch from the playbook calculated to make his comeback, he will NOT give an inch.

Stop agonizing over why or wether we should be compassionate. He deserves our compaasion when he acknowledges he did something wrong. He played the game of divide and hate, it makes mony and there is NO APOLOGY in the deal.

Stop whining about compassion for someone who has no shame. Give your compassion to the people he hurt.....there are many.

81. How is wanting an apology moralizing?
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 02:34 PM by olmy
What is your issue? Care to tell?

What an odd place this is. I am a Democrat, gay, agree with all the things here, love the information I get here, but when I post I get nothing but grief about moralizing, or that I should take my postings somewhere else, or attacked with name calling.

I am begining to think this is quite the exclusive little club, and your post count matters more than anything else. Is there some kind of test you have to take, or some ritual involved?

The Datalounge has people who are more accepting to people than the responses I have gotten here. If it is your desire to have a more narrow view on what a democrat should write like, or his vocabulary be up to your standards?

If that is the case, you better add that in the posting rules. This
is the way I write, if you have an issue with it, pass it by.
