have a look at Harry Harrison's 'Homeworld', the first book in his 'To the Stars' trilogy. It was published in 1980, and imo the man must have the Sight. I'm re-reading it for the first time in years and it makes my skin crawl.

Do read it! If you have any interest at all in a well-written glimpse into The Future According To The Rightwing Nutters, read this book.

2. The old stand-by /1984/ is pretty good...

...even though I think the society described there is supposed to be more like a deviant form of communism (Orwell himself was a socialist critical of the direction communist nations had taken). But the stuff on revisionist history and propaganda is pretty good.

With news stories on-line, it is much easier to remove or edit news after the fact. No need to destroy every slip of paper.

It's a pagan book, but shows what would occur from that perspective.
