Anthrax Killer: meant to push Democrats into supporting Patriot Act-War?
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 07:38 AM by Q
- Could it be that the Anthrax Killer has never been found because he was working for the Bush* administration?

- What's your take on this issue?

1. About the same as yours...
To think the White House, FBI and Justice Department have essentially dropped the ball on this is astounding. One has to wonder.

2. Why has this particular event been forgotten?
...Isn't this terrorism on our own soil? How hard could it be to find someone with access to Anthrax of this type?

- I've concluded that the Anthrax Killer was working for the Bushies and that they have no intention of finding him. Just as they have no intention of finding out who outted the CIA operative.

29. It has been forgotten
by our Government because they were allowed to forget it when no one challenged them. It was forgotten by most of the public because it was just one more horrible thing that was followed by another horrible thing etc... on and on and on
I agree, they do not want to find this person but occasionally they will drain a pond or something to fool the masses.

82. Not astounding, at all
For the Busheviks to find the Right-Wing-Anthrax Assassin would be the same as Marcos finding the guy who assassinated Benino Aquino.

I've been saying from damned near the first moments of this that the Anthrax Assassin would NEVER be found.

It's a prediction I am sticking to. And I am as confident as if I had predicted in 1948 that Stalin's Agriculture Department would lie about grain production.

That confident.

4. FBI Lethargy Lets the Anthrax Killer Go Free
Published on Wedn esday, July 3, 2002 in the International Herald Tribune

FBI Lethargy Lets the Anthrax Killer Go Free

by Nicholas D. Kristof

NEW YORK -- The FBI's bumbling before Sept. 11 is water under the bridge. But the bureau's lackadaisical ineptitude in pursuing the anthrax killer continues to threaten America's national security by permitting him to strike again or, more likely, to flee to Iran or North Korea.

Almost everyone who has encountered the FBI anthrax investigation is aghast at the bureau's lethargy. Some in the biodefense community think they know a likely culprit, whom I'll call Mr. Z. Although the bureau has carried out lie-detector tests on Mr. Z, searched his home twice and interviewed him four times, it has not placed him under surveillance or asked its outside handwriting expert to compare his writing with that on the anthrax letters.

This is part of a larger pattern. Astonishingly, the FBI allowed the destruction of anthrax stocks at Iowa State University, losing what might have been valuable genetic clues. Then it waited until December to open the intact anthrax envelope it found. The FBI didn't obtain anthrax strains from various labs for comparison until March, and the testing is still not complete. The bureau did not systematically polygraph scientists at two suspect labs, Fort Detrick, Maryland, and Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, until a month ago.

Perhaps it's a cheap shot for an armchair detective to whine about the caution of dedicated and exceptionally hard-working investigators. Yet months pass and the bureau continues to act like, well, a bureaucracy, plodding along in slow motion. People in the biodefense field first gave Mr. Z's name to the bureau as a suspect in October.

He denies any wrongdoing, and his friends are heartsick at suspicions directed against a man they regard as a patriot. Some of his lie-detector tests show evasion, I hear, although that may be because of his temperament.

If Mr. Z were an Arab national, he would have been jailed long ago. But he is a true-blue American with close ties to the Defense Department, the CIA and the U.S. biodefense program. On the other hand, he was once caught with a girlfriend in a biohazard "hot suite" at Fort Detrick, surrounded only by blushing germs.

11. Q, the article I was referring to
in Vanity Fair names "Mr.Z" as James Hatfill, and expands very persuasively on the points mentioned in the Kristof article you linked to.

The October issue of Vanity Fair has several very worthwhile articles, but if it had only contained the one report "The Message in the Anthrax" by Don Foster, it still would have been worth at least four times the newstand price.

38. The Vanity Fair article
is most definitely one that everyone here should read.

Foster doesn't say so outright, but I absolutely got the idea from his article that whoever did this is tight with the FBI and is being protected by them, for whatever reason.

Hatfill still looks like the most likely suspect. It's amazing the way Foster, even with so much evidence withheld from him by the FBI, could construct a case by following where letters were mailed from and who would be in attendance at conferences, etc.

Also very telling is the attempt to frame the Arabic guy.

My own take is that whoever did this is part of what I can only call the republican brownshirt militia. Some of the people working in our govt services, it is glaringly obvious, have more in common with Timothy McVeigh and the KKK and SS than they do with you and me.

I have no doubt that Ashcroft does not want the anthrax attacker found (the one who sent real anthrax is the real issue, but there were two different attacks at the time, I think it's important to remember because people can talk about this and use the fake one to avoid facts about the real one).

I also find the timing of the USA Patriot Act to be very odd, both in its highly developed form so soon after 9-11, and the way in which those who contested it were targeted...i.e. Daschle and Leahy.

These are things which are further evidence of the fascist nature of the Bush junta that, for some reason, (cough) the mainstream media does not want to bring to the attention of the American people.

Nevertheless, people who never post on DU, who are not involved in any political entity that I know assume this was done by someone who was enabling Bush's "patriot act."

It's also frightening to know that the only reason they did not pull a similiar stunt with the outbreak of the invasion of Iraq is because of the guy who went on Bill Moyers' NOW and outed them.

What further evidence is necessary to see that these guys are taking their cues from another guy who took over a country by raw power and proceeded to create a dictatorship based upon a cult of personality and a fear of a semitic people.

15. IMHO, articles like this tend to make scapegoats of people as well as...
...organizations. IMHO, paying too much attention to what has happened at the lower levels allows those really to blame at higher levels to escape detection. It has been well-documented by the FBI, as well as the CIA, that certain avenues of investigation before and after 911 were closed off by those currently in power.

It doesn't take much to sidetrack and/or shut down an investigation. It can be done by inadequate funding, or an order to destroy certain pieces of evidence, or a diversion of investigatory manpower into other "areas of interest", or a simple bureaucratic slowdown at key administrative points, or "lost files"...or all of the above.

The straw that has broken the camel's back has been the multiple attempts by the Bushies to shift blame for a variety of issues to the FBI, CIA, the Pentagon, the DOJ, the military, and other Federal organizations. That has in turn created a backlash by strong factions within each of those groups, and that has resulted in quite a few recent negative articles in the mainstream media.

39. Foster's article
was very clear in noting that the FBI...part of it...opposed him at every turn.

it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that there are factions within these organizations which are more amenable to right wing extremism than other people within the same organization, and it would seem their allegiance is to an agenda, not to this nation.

We saw the same thing with Reagan and Iran/Contra, Bush I and Iraqgate, Reagan and the mujahadeen...maybe they lie to themselves and think they are patriots, but our constitution refutes their lies or delusions.

30. What hasn't been discussed
Every solid investigation into a crime where the perpetrator is unknown touches on motive to figure out who is responsible. In all these years, NOBODY has discussed who had the motive to send anthrax. Let's look at the intended victims.

The photographer: Took pictures of the Bush twins fitshaced and underage.

The New York Post: Sure, it's owned by Rupert Murdoch. But it also published an article about Jennifer Fitzgerald, Poppy's longtime mistress.

ABC News anchor Peter Jennings: Former lover of Palestinian spokeswoman Hannan Aswari (sp?), and widely perceived to be the most liberal of the Big 3 network anchors.

NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw: A leading environmentalist spokesperson, and a "face" of the Sierra Club.

CBS News anchor Dan Rather: Ambushed Poppy Bush during an infamous newscast in 1988.

The Senate Democrats, especially Tom Daschle: The Democrats had control of the Senate in 2001 at this point. Take out three liberals for good measure ("insurance") and the Republicans are back in control.

***

Rule out Iraq. Why would Saddam Hussein want more Republicans back in control, to steer the USA into war with his country. He's the last person who would have sent anthrax. To wit, just because you're accused of being a madman doesn't mean you're insane.

In short, the threat was domestic. And I assert that the only person or persons who had motive against all these intended victims is a Bush family loyalist. Flame away if you like, but I'd like to see who you believe has motive.

20. and the "liberal" media got anthrax too
But not one conservative outlet was targeted. When this all went down with the Democrats getting the envelopes as well as the media, My first thought was "hey, the 'bad guys' are the republicans, why are the Dems being targeted?"

It's been primarily the Republicans and their brand of foreign policy that has done more harm to the world than good. I mean come on, Tom Daschel is enemy number one the terrorists list? I'll bet my bottom dollar it was somehow connected to this administration. This is how they were able to run over us in a climate of fear and confusion.

10. It was an assassination attempt
on Tom Daschle and probably Leahy. I wouldn't doubt that those in the admin are associated somehow. It's just very strange that the culprit hasn't been found - it's really hard to believe. At that time, there was also an all out assault on Daschle from every direction and some Repukes thought he was going to run for president. I really do think someone wanted to get rid of him especially.

...and that the 'Free' Press has let it go down the memory hole.

- This was a terrorist attack on American soil. Yet...nothing has been done to secure the terrorists.

- Are the Bushies callous enough to let this go because the attack was against Democrats? Or could it be true that they KNOW who it is and can't bring them to justice for fear of exposing a plot?

17. As far as investigation and threats on lives
we could compare it to the TREASON in the outing of Mrs. Wilson. Was this a threat against their family? How could it be anything else. They have small children who will live under this shadow for the entire lives and those lives could be short now as could the Wilson's themselves. Is this the right wing "hardball" - shut up or else? Possibly and probably.

Do the math.

And see if you would like to sell insurance to Democratic Senators.

Roughly 50 Democratic Senators at a time hold office over the past few years.

Mel Carnahan had just taken the lead in the polls a few weeks before the election -- he wasn't a Senator yet, but his plane went down and he died. (His opponent, John Ashcroft, still lost the election; Carnahan's widow served as Senator.)

Paul Wellstone, incumbent, had just taken the lead in the polls before the election. But, his plane went down, killing him, his wife, and another family member. Decent weather, two pilots, twin-engine plane known as one of the safest turboprops around. Airport had not had a fatal crash there in twenty years. Lead crash investigator was experienced -- had also investigated the Carnahan crash, and had formerly worked at the CIA.

Senator Majority Leader Daschle, received highly weaponized anthrax in the mail.

Judiciary Chair Leahey, ditto.

So 4 (3 Democratic Senators plus 1 Democratic Governor likely to be elected Senator) out of 50 have died suddenly or been targets of attempted murder in the past 3 years.

Add to that the snipers running around D.C. and the weeks-long hysteria of that, and you start to see a bit of a pattern. And that doesn't even go back to the fact that the Senate's veteran liberal had two brothers assassinated.

21. If they can find the people that blew up the WTC in '93
they can find the Anthrax mailer if they want to find him.

They found the bombers based on a small shard of metal that had the serial number of the rented van. Of all of the rubble caused by a van packed with explosives, they found a small shard of metal off of the axel of the van that had the explosives.

If they can do this, they should have NO problem finding the anthrax mailer.

Bartley has been shaping neoconservative opinion for over 30 years and his father was a VETERINARIAN and the origin of the "Ames" stain of anthrax used in the attacks...just my $0.02 and worthy of investigation

Robert L. Bartley
In January 2003 Robert L. Bartley became The Wall Street Journal's editor emeritus after more than 30 years guiding the paper's editorial pages. He is author of the weekly "Thinking Things Over" column, which has been written by three previous Journal editors, starting in 1934.

Over his career, Mr. Bartley won a Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing, a Gerald Loeb Award and a Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club of America. He is author of a book on Reagan administration economic policy, "The Seven Fat Years: And How to Do It Again," published in 1992 by the Free Press.

Mr. Bartley joined the Journal in 1962 and served as a staff reporter in the Chicago and Philadelphia bureaus before joining the editorial page staff in New York in 1964. He was appointed editor of the editorial page in 1972, editor of the Journal in 1979 and a vice president of Dow Jones & Co. in 1983.

... a long, long time ago. A former veterinarian (and cattle farmer) of ours in rural VA (not far from DC) really shocked the bejeebus outta me when it turned out he was a total right-wing whack job. The scary kind, if you know what I mean. Ever since then I've thought the FBI should perhaps expand their search to include RW nutjobs with veterinary connections of some kind. Who better to have knowledge of/access to labs dealing with anthrax?

I think I'd better put away the tinfoil hat of mine. This is really too freaky to contemplate for very long.

32. "The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Friend" Way of Thinking By Repukes
Why would they want to go after someone who is trying to take out key democrats that the repukes hate? The Fox and the Repukes have made no secret of their hatred for Daschle and Leahy.. as far as I'm concerned they were aiding the terrorists and encouraging them to go after these fine men.

33. Anyone else see a familiar pattern here?
- The Anthrax story hit the front pages for a couple weeks and then...nothing. The Wilson affair hit the front pages for a couple weeks and then...nothing. Bush's* blatant lies about Iraq's WMD...well...you know the rest of the story.

- There is a concerted effort by the American media to coverup the crimes and misdeeds of the Bush* administration.

- Democrats should be made aware that this will continue...and that the same corporate media will help Bush* into the WH in 2005.

It has been my opinion, ever since the anthrax attacks occurred, that the Bush* regime was behind it. It's too much of a coincidence that congressional dems and media people were targeted; it has certainly been an effective way of getting across the message "be careful what you say".

77. Did he really say this??? Incredible.
I've never been one for conspiracy theories, at least for the past ten years or so, but something stinks worse than the terrarium where my snake regurgitated.

Something is really wrong with this administration. I remember that my mother originally hated George Bush I due to his affiliation with the Trilateral Commission. I think there is / was a conspiracy theory floating around out there that had something to do with the Trilateral Commission, although I have no idea what it is. (Maybe I should go educate myself.) I dismissed the conspiracy theory at the time.

Now my mother loves Bushes I and II. I think she was hoodwinked by the religious right and the 700 Club. She is a member of the Christian Coalition and a very scary person. Recently she decided I was demon-possessed. Just nuts. And she wonders why I've felt suicidal.

I've been pretty quick to dismiss conspiracy theories since my early- to mid-twenties. But I'm inclined to think that the exposed lies are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Chimp.

Here goes, :tinfoilhat: firmly in place if you so desire:

1) This was an assassination attempt on leading Democratic Senators.

2) BEcause this was obviously politically motivated, it comes under the heading of terrorism.

3) The lack of any investigation of this assassination attempt on the part of the administration indicates potential culpability in the act by the administration.

I think those Senators were supposed to die.

I think all others were meant to fear for their own lives and that of their families.

The anthrax to the media was for the same reason, to distract them from noting and reporting the power grab, while they feared for themselves.

After 9/11 there was no need to push the Democrats
into supporting the war or the Patriot Act. There was
widespread public support for both.

Why would the Bushies use intimidation tactics that weren't needed.

50. How do you know they 'weren't needed'?
- 9-11 itself was used to intimidate congress and the American public into blind support of the Bushies and their plans for preemptive war.

- The Patriot act was passed without any real debate because of the 'urgency' of the situation. After the anthrax...many in congress didn't even bother to read the act before voting for it.

- Before the anthrax...there was too much discussion and debate about America's response. Anthrax sent to the right people put an end to that debate.

55. Not so; there was initial reluctance
from the Congress to rush through the Patriot Act.

September 19, 2001: The first draft of what will later be called the Patriot Act is introduced to Congress. However, due to Congressional opposition of its broad powers, the act is revised and reintroduced on October 2.

October 2, 2001: The "anti-terrorism" Patriot Act is introduced in Congress, but is not well received by all. One day later, Senate Majority Leader and future anthrax target Tom Daschle (D) says he doubts the Senate will take up this bill in the one week timetable the administration wants. As head of the Senate, Daschle has great power to block or slow passage of the bill. Attorney General Ashcroft accuses Senate Democrats of dragging their feet. On October 4, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman and future anthrax target Patrick Leahy (D) accuses the Bush administration of reneging on an agreement on the anti-terrorist bill. Leahy is in a key position to block or slow the bill. Some warn that "lawmakers are overlooking constitutional flaws in their rush to meet the administration's timetable." Two days later, Ashcroft complains about "the rather slow pace…over his request for law enforcement powers… Hard feelings remain." The anthrax letters to Daschle and Leahy are sent out on October 9 and difficulties in passing the Act continue.

October 24, 2001: The House of Representatives passes the final version of the Patriot Act and other previously unpopular Bush projects: Alaska oil drilling, $25 billion in tax cuts for corporations, taps into Social Security funds and cuts in education. Two days later, the Senate passes the final version of the Patriot Act. Anthrax targets Senators Daschle and Leahy now support the bill. Bush signs it into law the same day.

Thank you, Paul Thompson:

I'm satisfied that the anthrax mailer was Hatfill. They had the nerve to try to pay him off with a $150,000 job at the LSU bio-terrorism lab in Baton Rouge. It was quite a scandal that they were allowing this man, with invented credentials, to work in the lab. Fortunately, he got run off pretty quickly. ... but try as they may, they simply can't get any "evidence" to stick
to Hatfill. He's just the unfortunate turkey who had a "kick me" sign
stuck on his back when he wasn't looking.

The real investigation stopped as soon as it became obvious that
Dr. Philip Zack was the culprit (aided and abetted by Dr. Barbara
Rosenberg).

Zack was caught on security camera entering the anthrax storage area
at Fort Detrick without authorization. He had been dismissed a few
weeks previously. (Seem to recall that this was due to Zack's racial
harrassment of an Egyptian colleague.)

Zack as an independent Bush-sympathetic nut-case or Zack as an agent
of the Bush cause? Does it matter? The result was the same - those
targets who survived learned to keep their head down and their
mouth shut. The other potential candidates for a dusty letter knew
who they were and learned from the examples of others.

Zack was *caught* on camera (i.e., caught means he did not get away with it)...

NINE YEARS EARLIER!!!

Ooops. I'm very impressed now. Why do you leave out this most important of facts?

Zack was *caught* sneaking into an area for which he was not authorized in 1993!!!

This means nothing! And that is the entire basis on which the material case against Zack is built.

The anthrax would have had to have been processed in the two years previous to the attacks, at the outmost.

Zack (an aggressive Zionist who had attacked his Arab coworker) is in fact the one with the kick-me sign on his back, placed there by whatreallyhappened.com and a host of other sites for whom it's ALWAYS the Mossad that did it.

If Zack was the perpetrator, why wouldn't the FBI nail him?

I have an answer for Hatfill, however... whether he was involved or not, once the investigation gets to him, the door is open to the American biowarfare establishment. Who all have the automatic alibi of being "us."

I like how you add Rosenberg in as a suspect. Takes chutzpah.

I don't think it was Zack or Hatfill... it was a plumbing operation ordered from somewhere pretty damn near the top. 9/11 may have been merely "Wishing for Pearl Harbor" or LIHOP, but anthrax is MIHOP all the way, and pretty transparent to boot.

... I agree with your last two paragraphs.

I left out the date in the same way that the "evidence" against
Hatfill has been so comprehensively provided by the American media.
I don't think it was Hatfill and there is insufficient hard evidence
against Zack either but only one ever seems to be raised as a suspect.
That just got my goat at the time.

> Zack was caught (=CAUGHT!) in the restricted area of a government

>
> Well, come on, you going to argue otherwise?

I am not going to "argue" with you - your helpful post (.65) suggests
that you have done more recent research into this than I have and I
recognise that my memory may have shuffled things.

I stated "Ft. Detrick" as I was looking at a printout of parts
of a January 2002 Hartford Courant article which referred to
"USAMRIID, Fort Detrick, Md" as "the lab" in conjunction with both
Lt.Col Langford and Lt.Col Zack (successive lab commanders - Langford
followed Zack and criticised the latter for lacking discipline,
organisation and accountability). There was no other reference in
that extract to any other lab.

"Chutzpah"? In English please?
If it means "mistake" then it's probably correct ...

Pax.

58. Psychological conditioning of the populace
From "The Stealth Coup" (shandalia@eartlink.net)

September 2001 -

"While the nation was stripped to the emotional bone and painfully vulnerable, the White House capitalized on the opportunity to reshape public perceptions and responses to conform with the PNAC's new American agenda. Rather than buoy the "can do" American spirit with optimism and hope for the future as Presidents before him had done in times of crisis, Bush spoke with an alarmist and pessimistic tone that served to perpetuate the high anxiety, excitability and fear in the populace.

"To hear him speak, the world was a dark, evil and dangerous place....terrorism was here to stay....it would be a long struggle....America was helpless without the military might of the Government to keep the nation safe. The intent was to create a psychologically broken, weary and docile populace that would be easier to lead into war.

"Fear became the Administration's strategic tactic for reprogramming the public into accepting the PNAC's militaristic designs. Still shell-shocked and exhausted from the enormity of the WTC and Pentagon tragedies, the public's panic shifted into frenzied over-drive when anthrax-laced envelopes arrived in government and media offices, killing five people. A perpetrator was never identified but the investigation eventually centered around the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, one of the nation's main anthrax research centers.

"Using classic "operant learning" techniques from the realm of consumer psychology, the public was purposely kept on High Alert and continually "shaped" with ominous sound bites on the nightly news and "Level Orange Terror Alerts" at regularly scheduled but discrete intervals. "

65. A is for Anthrax...
The anthrax incident should have put an end to doubt about the "war on terror" and everything else that the regime has been doing. It has been utterly forgotten, although during October 2001 it was trumped up as something even bigger than 9/11.

Unlike the case of 9/11, the facts about the anthrax attacks are simple, clear and close to conclusive:

-On Sept. 11th the White House immediately put some of its staff, including Cheney, on Cipro. How did they know to pick this antibiotic, out of the many available? How could they guess that anthrax (or another pathogen against which Cipro can protect) was coming?

-A wave of stories immediately after Sept. 11th announced that anthrax was the likeliest next attack. We were even threatened with a specific sequence of future attacks: anthrax, smallpox, plague. (They've been drumming up the smallpox scare ever since the anthrax attacks stopped.) Of all the hundreds of biowar germs and literally thousands of types of terror attacks, why was this idea circulated so prominently? Who was behind the stories?

-The FBI destroyed a stockpile of original Ames strain samples 10 days after the attacks began. Why?! This was a precaution?!

-Suspect Hatfill and his colleague in science William Capers Patrick, the respected dean of American biowarfare research, were both involved in a 1999 SAIC/Batelle Memorial study on modalities that terrorists might employ in sending anthrax through the mail.

-The report from that study specified an ideal weight of anthrax sample per envelope (a tablespoon) and a form of weaponized anthrax. This was the amount and type used in the attack. In other words, the anthrax attackers probably had access to this secret report (Note, however that the amount also happens to be a logical one).

-The anthrax went first to the headquarters of the country's biggest tabloid owner (National Enquirer and Florida Sun-Sentinel). The Enquirer had printed a series of anti-Bush "conspiracy" stories, including one claiming that McVeigh was still breathing after his execution. The Enquirer also published embarrassing pictures of the Bush twins drunk, which had gotten much play on Drudge and similar outlets. Was this an object lesson to the media?

-The wife of the paper's editor had rented an apartment to Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi. Were they going to do a story about this that would not have fit the official 9/11 line?

-The next group of attacks hit the New York media. They arrived just as the Afghanistan campaign began and caused maximum coverage of nothing but anthrax. For a vital week or two, the 9/11 investigation and Afghanistan dropped out of the media.

-About one-half of the FBI agents assigned to 9/11 were dispatched to cover anthrax!

-The third wave of attacks, the one that fit the specifications of the secret paper, was sent first to Daschle and Leahy - the leader of the opposition in the Senate and the head of the Judiciary Committee.

-This exceptional piece of constituent mail arrived at around the same time as the USA PATRIOT Act was also submitted to the Congress. The House chose to immediately run home, casting their votes for this negation of the U.S. Constitution as they went. The Senate soon followed suit, also approving the USA PATRIOT Act.

- The next reports were that Kennedy and Levin had also received anthrax letters, which however were caught unopened.

-The notes included with the anthrax letters tried to point the blame at Arab perpetrators, but these were clumsy and transparent ("Allah is Great" instead of "God Is Great" or "Allah Akhbar.")

-Only days later did reports arrive of anthrax being found in mail to the White House, Pentagon, Federal Reserve, CIA, etc., all of which had by then been very safely isolated on military bases. No details about these alleged attacks have been released. We have not seen copies of the letters, as in the case of Daschle, Leahy and Brokaw. There have been no follow up reports on the provenance of the anthrax employed.

How strange how the first attacks on government officials, which were the only ones that had a chance to get through, went to the Democratic leadership!

-Suddenly, the anthrax wave was dropped as quickly as it had begun. The biggest U.S. media story of October 2001 was effectively swept away. The media obediently switched to the taking of Kabul and spent November 2001 preparing us for a thoughtful Thanksgiving with endless soul-searching stories asking how our country could have ever produced a Johnny Taliban.

-Anthrax has since been mentioned only rarely and out of context, as when Powell had the gall to hold up a vial of white powder at the UN and ask where Saddam is hiding his anthrax. Well, Colin, where are you keeping yours?

-All the foreign anthrax letters reported at various times have been dismissed as white-powder hoaxes.

-Since the attacks, it has been established that the anthrax to Leahy and Daschle was of recent production, with high-quality, weaponized spores such as can be produced only by a specialist at an advanced facility; and that the lineage goes back to Fort Detrick, Maryland and the Ames strain used by American biowarfare programs.

-For all this, an obvious effort was made to minimize casualties and target the letters very specifically to individuals. The same amount of anthrax could have been spread in a fashion causing many more deaths.

-Having gotten as far as Hatfill, the FBI investigation has now stalled for nearly two years. Could it be that the lone perpetrator thesis is not sustainable, and they don't want to deal with the implications?

What does that add up to?

As a selective wave of terror, the attacks were perfectly designed and timed to cow the opposition, force through the USA PATRIOT Act, make an exampe of deviant journalists, divert the 9/11 investigation, and frighten and occupy the media during the first phase of the Afghanistan war. The attacks provided important reinforcement in keeping these various actors from deviating in any way from the official post-Sept. 11th atmosphere of terror and panic. They were the key step in initiating the post-Sept. 11 transformation of American society and law.

In other words, the anthrax attacks look exactly as though they were planned and executed by a black-ops or damage control team working on behalf of the Bush regime's goals, either as rogues or as appointed hitmen. We might compare them to Nixon's Plumbers, except that this crew would have been much more sophisticated and effective in their choice of methods.

That is the only thesis forwarded so far that credibly covers all of the above facts. In fact, this is the thesis that many people subscribe to when speaking off the record in the the world capital of paranoia itself, Washington, DC. In this case, there is no doubt which way Occam's razor cuts. (NOTE: Although Occam's razor is only a guideline, not a law.)

Are Brokaw and Rather really unaware of all this? And what have Daschle/Leahy/Kennedy done or said about these facts? They do not even defend themselves against assassination attempts on themselves and their staff.

This is the context in which we should view the Jan. 2002 call from Cheney, the premature Cipro-taker, to Daschle, the anthrax recipient, threatening dire consequences if the latter should push too hard for a 9/11 investigation in the Congress. This touched off a series delays in the joint investigation, which first opened in June.

Surprisingly, it was announced that the hearings would take up the anthrax attacks. In practice, however, they did not.

The Democratic leaders are so scared, or so compromised, or otherwise being blackmailed with some other threat, that they have not risen to this challenge. I don't envy or accuse most of them - except for their behavior when Cynthia McKinney came under fire, that was atrocious.

The question is, who is finally going to confront the Bush mob?

75. PLEASE GIVE US A REPORT...
This topic was making me lose hope, actually. What matters that the CIA now wants to nail Dubya on the Plame issue, when the whole game was lost two years ago when no one stood up to the coup d'etat? Anthrax is 10 times the scandal that Plame is (not that I'm not happy to see them in trouble about that).

So please let us know what Daschle & Leahy said...

Well, what did Daschle / Leahy say about anthrax? (It's two years to the day since they got their mailings, isn't it?)

78. Did you see CBS News Tonight?
The Inside Story reported disturbing information: that the victims who survived the disease after having been infected by the Anthrax Assassin are still horribly ill, and may never fully recover.

But what is strangest is that the US government does not consider the harm done to them any differently than they would any other kind of injury they might have suffered at their workplace. They are not getting the healthcare they desperately need, because their insurance does not cover it!!

For some reason, they are not parties to the funds that survivors of the Sept 11 attacks are. Now, why is that?

to the tinfoilatters, and that was just to maintain the fear level among the public, and to, oh yeah, get the ANTIpatriot act passed by a, damn, honesty hurts sometimes, cowardly congress.

I shiver to think what scale will be necessary for the the next bushco catalyst toward authoritarian rule to succeed.

87. Now you know why Jefferson and other founders...
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 07:33 AM by Q
...thought that a free press was absolutely essential for a Democracy to survive. Without an informed citizenry...people are little more than consumer slaves and taxpaying cattle.

- We'll never have anything close to an independent media again as long as the partisan fat cats who own the papers and networks are beholden to the government.

88. bin Laden - Anthrax Killer - Saddam...
...looks like King George doesn't have a very good record when it comes to bringing terrorists to justice. Is it just a coincidence that the Bushies haven't found those responsible for giving them unprecedented and perpetual 'wartime' powers?

89. I doubt that the working people (USP employees) were intentionally targete
but were probably considered necessary collateral damage. They were all just little people anyway. Kind of like that congress peep that considered a few troop deaths a small price to pay to further the greater goal.

I'm sure that people with the scientific and technical skills to work around weaponized anthrax would realize how easily it would escape from an envelope. If they didn't, they'd be dead by now. Geez, I store flower seeds in postage envelopes and fine seeds are forever sneaking out through corners.

I'm sure that those "collateral" deaths were anticipated as possible or likely, and even considered somewhat beneficial to up the level of terror. I don't think that there is much that the people responsible would flinch at in the pursuit of their greater goals.

As to who did it, I'm a big believer in looking at motive. Posts above lay that out fully.

91. A more sinister theory
I admit, it is my own, but it actually makes as much, if not more sense, than many. Listen up...

Notice how Daschled dropped off the map? Who's office was shut down for six months? Which office building? Who did this "clean-up?"

I posit that the entire thing was a sham; at the very least, the clean up. The Senate turned over it's entire office building to the Bush administration for six months, with no one being allowed to step foot in the place even if they wanted to.

How many desk drawers and computers do you thing the RNC "Clean up crew" rifled through while they had total, unfettered, unrestricted, unsupervised access to the offices of Daschle, et al? How much dirt do you suppose they dug up on various senators with which to help compell them to suck Bush's choad, as Dashcle did?

I admit, it could be called a "crazy conspiracy theory." Except, it makes too damn much sense! I'd do it if I were a crazed megalomaniacal paranoid turd frat boy.

92. yes...
another important aspect.

while 9/11 holds many puzzles, there is nothing about the anthrax attacks that does not "fit" the picture of a pro-Bush coup d'etat. Simple, pretty much untraceable, obvious motives, entirely predictable effects.
