Prostlytizing becomes Overbearing in Ozarks to some
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 12:53 PM by Mari333
Gads , living there must be horrific if you arent an evangelical..

Joel Waxman, a physician at St. John's, has been handed religious pamphlets by patients. He's been invited to church by colleagues. He's been stopped on the streets and had people offer to pray for him.

A devout Jew, Waxman understands the importance of religion. Yet he tires of others trying to turn him from his faith and embrace theirs.

"These missionaries are like telemarketers," says Waxman. "And I want to be put on the 'don't call' list.">>>

1. Don't communities like this have problems having doctors
practice there?

This is a real good way of making non-evan doctors want to stay there.

2. In The Good Old Days
Communties like this didn't have doctors.

And lo and behold, as time went by, the population of these people was thinned out with such award-winning medical techniques as the ever-popular "laying on of hands" and "handling of snakes."

Why can't we go back to the good old days?

3. Maybe they should seek out some evangelical
doctors, then.

4. Witnessing at the local Burger King. No joke.
We took a break from a long drive one Saturday morning and went into the Burger King for a sausage biscuit and hash brown breakfast. It was early and we thought we were the only ones in the place and sat towards the back. We had barely settled down when suddenly we heard two people talking scriptures. I looked up over the booth and on the far side of the place I saw eyes from a white haired, white man staring at me. He must have been twenty feet from us and was sitting down with someone at the table, but they were booming their voices and it became obvious that we were the source of their "witnessing" attempt. So I mentioned it to my crowd and before I could stop them, one of the members of my party shouted out, "HOW LONG BEFORE WE GET TO DELAND?" and the other member in my party shouted back, "GEE, IT DEPENDS ON TRAFFIC, OF COURSE." There was silence from the other end of the restaurant, but when they began talking again, they used acceptable, "inside voice."

8. Yes, FL
The part of the state north of Palm Beach is evangelically heavy.

We has a witnessing attempt at my last job there.

Not a fun place.

9. Driving from Orlando to Ocala is a major test to anyone who is secular.
There are huge cow pastures with Clear Channel billboards splashed with conservative right-wing christian messages. And there is no doubt that Clear Channel is right-wing christian because one of the messages boasts about their media coverage.

5. "Please leave me alone"
My all-purpose answer to the God botherers, be they evangelical Christians, Jews for Jesus, Hare Krishnas, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons or whatever. Pinheads who don't accept the polite refusal are liable to refusals of increasing volatility.
