Dean's obscene retort to Gephardt shown on The Daily Show
Hey,

A friend of mine with cable taped a week of TDS and brought it when he visited this weekend. One clip they played over and over showed Dean in a debate reacting to Gephardt criticizing his record by saying "Get f***ed"-- no sound but lipreading was very easy. He wasn't muttering to himself but being very explicit. I searched the archives to see if this had been mentioned at DU, as I don't remember seeing any reference to it.

Have preferred Dean heretofore but this shows a lack of judgment and self-control that I find bothersome. To do this in front of a camera gives me pause. Did anyone else see it, and what do you make of it if so?

I don't think so.

....he said "Chocolate Frosted Pop-Tarts", which looks an awful lot like "get f--ked" when you watch it over and over again.

Frankly, the Iowa chapter of Strawberry Toaster Streudel Lovers are holding a boycott as a result of his flip-flopping on flavored breakfast pastries.

83. of course, what he said was
"Fuddle duddle".

He was quoting wise old Canadian philosopher Pierre Trudeau, who swore (heh) he said exactly that in the House of Commons back in 1971.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/indepth/trudeau/inhisownwords.html

You can even listen to the contemporary CBC radio report, with the opposition's indignation at his alleged mouthing of two words, the first starting with "f" and the second starting with "o" (their formulation, not mine!), and Trudeau's classically bemused/dismissive response:

http://media.cbc.ca:8080/ramgen/radio/programs/thismorning/audio/tm_fuddle000928.rm

Heavens. If your leaders keep on like this, next thing you know they're going to be saying "The state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation"!

88. No, no! What he really said was "Gep-hardt!!", as in...
..."Gep-hardt! You ignorant slut!"

For those of you not old enough to remember, "You ignorant slut" is a line made famous by Saturday Night Live.

Dean was merely proving that his memory of important items from the past is much better than that of his pretzel-stuffing, alcohol-soaked, coke-ravaged potential opponent, Mr. Bunnypants.

Of course, even the average houseplant could claim to have a better memory than Mr. Dodge-and-Weave.

"That's false" -- was reported that way by the media the following day as well. No one suggested that he was swearing until Stewart did.

(on edit, added link:)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-3194007,00.html

``You've been saying for many months that you're the head of the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party,'' Gephardt said. ``I think you're just winging it.''

Dean grew visibly angry, mouthing, ``That's false,'' while Gephardt spoke.

Try a google news search for something like "dean debate that's false" and you'll get plenty of hits

I think I would actually like him more if he HAD said "get fucked." Since only the political junkies like us are really paying attention at this point it would be fun if the candidates would let it all hang out a little more.

I was pretty sure Dean was mouthing "That's false" and he was mouthing it deliberately for the cameras. Jon Stewart made the joke that he told Gepharrdt to "get f*cked," but that's all it was.

Despite the widespread exaggerations about Dean's hot temper, do you really think Dean would deliberately mouth profanity to the camera during a debate?

16. This is a very good article on Dean's "temper"..
http://reese.king-online.com/Reese_20031008/index.php

"An honest man with sincere convictions will get angry when he hears lies. Some of our greatest presidents had ferocious tempers. George Washington, Andy Jackson and Harry Truman are three examples.

You don't see other candidates getting angry because they are all phonies. Their so-called convictions are just campaign positions manufactured by their staffs. They don't really believe in anything except getting elected, so they really don't care what is said. They are like trial lawyers. They are interested only in scoring points and winning. There's nothing personal, and the truth simply doesn't matter."

In fact I did those fuckers as my name for the GOP in Harry's spirit but I disagree with the latter paragraph, I think its absurd to call Kucinich a phony, and the truth is what he wants us to find. The truth matters damned well to Kucinich. I dont care about temper at all, Truman was one of my favorites. Sorry if I took that personal but I think its absurd to think that Dean is the only "real" candiate especially with people like Kucinich out there.

oh, or was that Clark? Whatever. If he said it, no probs for me. It lets me know he is human.

It makes me recall David Robinson of the SA Spurs. One of the finest humans to ever play basketball. Contributes massive amounts of his salary to local charity and foundations that actually make a difference. Cut his own salary to keep Tim Duncan in San Antonio.

Anyway, when David had been in the league a few years the Spurs were playing on National TV on Easter Day. David, the Christian, got hacked and thought he was fouled. As they cut to commercial the foul was called against Robinson. He let out the loudest Fuck I have ever heard on TV. It increased my respect for him because it let you know he was human.

I think this could be good for Dean.

is very very difficult which is why so many deaf people learn sign language instead of lip reading. There are many constantants which look the same from a lip reader's perspective and thus one needs to know the context to effectively lip read. If you don't believe me ask any moderately competent speech therapist and he or she can tell you.

Hey,

Since this is the second false accusation of that nature in a few minutes, I am coming to a reluctant conclusion about the Dean supporters here at DU. It wasn't that TDS *said* what Dean said, but the way they played the clip over and over-- and the sly way Stewart kept saying "*What* did he say?" So I fell, not for hearsay, but for what I *thought* I was seeing (which Stewart obviously knew people would think they were seeing.) Zidzi and Padraig quite wrongly accused me of insincerity. Now you are saying I deserve to be raked over the coals, not for being an anti-Dean stealth poster, but for being dumb enough to be fooled-- and he's agreeing! "reading about" Hmmm-- Is DU so widely discussed that one can read about it etc. Just a guess--but I don't think GD nastiness is something that can be read about. GD nastiness must be observed and experienced.

It's also something that one has to study to see why it comes about.

General rule-- starting a thread with a flamebait title will result in "gd nastiness." Crying foul later is disingenous. It's an obvious result.

82. Just how much patience are we supposed to have?
In just the last few days we had Dean accused of being:

Racist against Hispanics Despite a transcript which clearly showed he hadn't done what the poster dishonestly claimed he had.

Racist against blacks for not reflexively condemning a plan that was unamimously agreed to by Michigan Democratic central committee which is cochaired by a black man. This 'evil' plan permitted mail and online voting in the upcoming caucus. FTR I do disagree with internet voting on security issues but to call it racist when combined with mail voting is dishonest.

Profane for a weeks old debate performance that one would have to believe only John Stewart was smart enough to get. Frankly, just running and posting any old thing you see on TV without putting any thought into the plausibility of it is getting to be an awfully old tactic of the anti Dean brigade.

26. You don't KNOW how many people tease me with this
when I'm lipreading.

Go to a mirror and say "olive juice" REPEATEDLY. Don't even voice it.

44. At the time I was positive he was saying "ten frogs", but
after carefull analysis I can see it really was "sad fawns," perhaps in reference to the childhood memory of watching Bambie.

32. I saw that during the debate
It's was very clearly a very well-pronounced "That's false."

It's such a shame Dean has so few faults and sins that people have to make things up.

71. Au contraire, Dean has plenty of faults, but you have to have your

eyes, ears, and mind open to perceive them.

He's not the AntiChrist but he's not the Second Coming of Christ, either.

59. He might want to keep it down now, but if elected President,
I would expect him to say it ten times a day. He could clean up the "Hill" in 90 days with those two words. Maybe he should hire a staff to say it for him, a guy can only be in so many places at one time after all.

If he did say it, especially to Lieberman's wussy brother, then he has my vote. "Lack of restraint?" Good! There's eight other candidates
who are restrained for those who don't have the strength of their convictions to vote for.

Sorry about the syntax.......dinner's on, then a meeting.

51. I have become outraged now.
I am now changing my vote from Dean back to
Gepbhartdt. I did not read this thread except
for the first post because I'm sure it is full
of a lot of Deanos making excuses for Dean's swearing on
TV in front of gals and children. I didn't see
it myself thank God but I am sure Jon Stewart
hired a very good lipreader for something this
importandt. I have had my doubdts about Dean before
because he doesn't have any cuff links, but this
is the last straw. Go Gebpdhartdt.

Look at Senator Kerry's snappy apearel.
That's the way the President of the 21st Century
ought to look these days when he's going
all around the world doing things. Dean is
trying to come off as a tough guy with those
sleves rolled up struting around like a
tough guy or a plumber or somebody. For
all I know he could go home and put a apron
on and wash the dishes with his sleves like
that.... And now ... Lipreadinggate. Thanks
but no thanks. I'm for Kerry all the way
unless something happens.

75. What does he have "wrong"? He said he himself has Napoleon

complex -- surely he'd know. He explained Napoleon complex briefly, nothing "wrong" there. He asserted that Dean has Napoleon complex. You may say he's wrong about that but can you back it up? If anyone is seeing Dean as having a Napoleon complex (and some of us are), it's not good for his image.

To me, Dean and Dubya both come across as rich frat boy types who are especially combative because they're short, i.e. they have Napoleon complexes. I've seen worse Napoleon complexes but I do see that in both of them.

Just as Dubya smirks, Dean mouths comments while others are speaking and is otherwise visibly uninterested in what others say, which looks very bad on camera. I haven't mentioned it before but he keeps doing it. I was surprised he hadn't unlearned these bad habits while he was governor.

Dean also has a pursed-mouth expression that makes him look like a pissed-off schoolmarm. I keep trying to be fair to Dean, in case he's actually the Dem nominee, but his smugness turns me off a lot.

The only thing I want to ask, and this is not to be a jerk, is, why does it have to be proven WRONG? Can you explain to me the behavior that you've seen that leads you to this consclusion?

Is it just that he's short and acts tough?

No, It is not funny - it makes me crazy to read intelligent people behaving badly.

You guys better taka a second read of this post -- some of you turned on the original poster without any proof - just on - hey, you posted something negative about Dean -- yeh, you are that anti-Dean person - yeah.

Really sad. Your candidate is a good guy - believe in him and stop doing the circular firing squad thing.

But considering the climate recently, it doesn't seem as though all of the guns are pointed at the center of the circle, you know?

I will say that I'm an avid Dean supporter, and I didn't jump into this thread with guns blazng. I'm kinda proud of myself for that, because I've done it in the past. But things are getting kinda dirty now, and a lot of people are on edge. We're just that used to having to defend our candidates.
