I was tombstoned on Discovery Channel forum!
I was relaxing, minding my own biz last nite, turned on "Monster Garage" (I know, not the most enlightening show, but i'm a bit of a gearhead...) Anyway, at the end of the show, if a creation fails, it get's destroyed. Last nites episodes destruction took place at a Marine base in San Diego. Typical manly bravado, nothing too suprising... First time there's ever been a military tie in on the show, however.
Here's why I was so upset; earlier in the day I was having a hot dog at Home Depot, after doing some shopping. A nice older man sat down at my table and we started talking... Turns out he was a Vietnam Vet ,Two tours, two purple hearts. We talked for 45 minutes, about the Bush's criminal invasions, PNAC, all of it...
He goes on to say that it took him 20 years to realize LBJ lied about that war. Then he starts talking about the nine buddies he lost, how he had to write nine letters to grieving families, and pack up nine boxes of personal effects to be sent home.
He started to get teary eyed as he explained his rage and helplessness watching the same thing happening all over again. This got me pretty upset,... this poor man, that honorably served his country, albeit under false pretense, was re- living his experience in front of my eyes....
We parted, I got in my truck and bawled my eyes out.
I guess that meeting affected me more than I'd thought, cuz after watching that manly military display at the end of "Monster Garage, I thought to myself, "How many of these young men I'm watching right now, will be shipped out, and fight innocents, and die? Is it that guy? Maybe that one... I couldn't get the image of that man I'd met earlier starting to weep.
Anyway, I posted a shorter version of some of what you just read, on the MG forum, got flamed instantly, fought back for a few posts, then refreshed... tombstoned. I'm sure my post came outta left field for the administrators, and obviously it's the wrong forum for that kind of discussion, but it suprised me nonetheless.

4. Sorry you got tossed from their forum
They probably just didn't know what to make of you. They do seem to stay on the safe side of things political. Tis their shortcoming, not yours.

Hope you are processing your talk with the vet in a constructive way. You raise some good points. I am reminded of an old recording by the Limeliters from early 60s; song about the ship Reuben James:
"Many years have passed and still I wonder why
the worst of men must fight
and the best of men must die".

There is no glory in violence, be it war or wasting machines. It does seem to be a part of all humans, but the good humans see that it is not glorious.

Take care of yourself. Glad you posted here.

13. It's a shame that some forums cannot tolerate any controversy......
and it appears the Discovery Channel forum seems to in that category. However; it is in good company since DU also suffers from that shortcoming.

5. That's just fucking sad.
I watched that MG last night as well. And I was disturbed by the military tie in at the end. I also wondered to my self which one of those gung ho fresh faces will be coming home in pieces, from who knows where, Iraq, Syria, Iran, N Korea? It made me sad and it also disgusted me that MG would piggie back on this pro war madness.

You blew me away when he said that it took him 20 years to figue out the BS of Vietnam. How long will it take this generation to figure out the truth, I'm guessing a lot longer.

P.S. I too drive an F-150 and eat polish dogs out side of Home Depot.

7. My truck is a '94 Mazda,
although technically it's a Ford Ranger....Wouldn't of bought if I'd known, I hate Ford, Henry was an anti semite. (No offence) I do like the spicy polish dogs though! Cheers!

9. But the current owners are not.
And after henry passed away, his sons went out of their way to patch up the mess he left behind. They do make a good truck and mine was built in Virginia U.S.A.. Mazda makes good cars as well.

14. Sorry, I guess that is a sensitive issue with me.
A few years ago, I HAD a friend who went on and on on why he would never drive a Ford. Henry was a Nazi and so on. This friend also drove a VW bus.

lol...

6. Something has been happening to Discover
and the History channels. It seems they are doing some pro Bush, pro Iraq war programming. Has Ruppert Murdoch bought them out too?

8. Was wondering about possible Murdoch connection also
Gave up on the history channel. Would put it on and be suddenly riminded of Mel Brooks doing Hitler and singing song about springtime. Both channels certainly seem to be working for recruiters of late; hey kids, war is cool... be the first on your block to blow shit up...

25. History channel had that cool Russian History day a couple weeks ago
I found it quite interesting. Russian history blows my mind. We may get pissed off at our government, and rightly so, but compared to the Russians from 1600 to about 1955, we've got diddly shit to complain about. In between the Tsars and Stalin... ugh. What a crazy place!

11. Hi
I've had similar experiences back when I was in my early 20s. I remember dropping into a local bar to have a beer with my brother. We struck up a conversation with an older guy from the neighborhood. He started telling us stories about fighting in WWII in the jungles of the Pacific. It was hair raising.

Good for you that you hung in there with this veteran. I'm sure that he felt good about you hearing him out. It doesn't get any better than being with people who give a damn.

15. Hi to you Eleny,
Actually it was an overwhelmingly emotional experience. I had dreams about him last night... It was my first time meeting someone who's heart is broken, just gushing blood and tears; (as is mine,) about the absolute destruction of this nation. His feelings are of course based on his horrible realization that his suffering for two tours, and the loss of his pals, was for nothing...

16. Thats messed up on the part of the board moderators...
I don't think that scene had any real 'pro war' deal, I mean, you GOTTA admit (since your a half-gearhead) that since our military sucks up so much money they build some pretty wicked crap.

I agree with some posts on the History channel and the pro-war feeling. I think they remain relatively unpolitical but its just the WAR CHANNEL, nothing else. It's all military, all war, all the time. No peaceful history, not at all.

Kinda OT: I'm sick of Monster Garage, that Jesse guy or whatever is a freaking asshole, I would deck that guy if he said half the shit he said to me. He also has some major assholes on the show, like the dude last week that was talking about kicking his wife in the head while she was standing next to him, and who said he would kick the wiring dudes ass for asking him to stop drumming on the car while he was trying to work. It is really disgusting.

American Chopper is getting old, every bike they build looks the same with different paint jobs, to me anyways. And there is way too much repetitive gratuitous drama.

I can't get enough of Monster House, though. What that says about me... I dunno. :)

19. Yeah, I thought that there was more to History than war.
That's all that the History channell shows. All war, all the time. Even Fox takes a break for Kobe Bryant or Gary Condit.

BTW, when is FO going to apologize to the Condit family? lol... that's a good one.

17. That's really upsetting...Especially on a website one would think would be
tolerant. But, I'm with you here. I probably would have said whatever you said after your experience that day, and those folks needed to hear it. If we don't fight back when we see "man's inhumanity to man" or "women's inhumanity to women," then we will become just what Bush/PNAC want.

You did what many of us would have. The Intolerance out there is not OUR fault but theirs.

27. Upon seeing this post...
I signed up there to post. Goddamnit that is an ignorant board, makes me all the more happy for DU.

One thread (from an enlisted solider) about how we should kill 500 iraqi for every 1 american they kill, regardless of whether it is against geneva.

Another, french are coward... well would we have a country if not for the French?

We need to fight such ignorance... I cannot even begin to think how.
