Poll question: how secure do DU'ers feel in their jobs?

just curious. kroger employees are out on strike today, picketing on the streets. i know and like a lot of them as i shop a lot there and over the years it feels like we've been through a lot together and had a lot of interesting discussions. i feel so helpless.

So, how would you rate your situation:

1. the lack of capital spending is killing the business that I am in

I don't see how this place will last another ten years. Not only that, they are farming design work out to India and Korea. (India! 12 time zones away, how idiotic).

2. My job is pretty secure

at least my function is. I'm maintaining a program I developed from start to finish and this summer just unveiled the second edition. The requests for changes and enhancements are pretty constant. Do you think I'm really good at commenting and documenting my code?

That's right - I stink at that on purpose.

11. Don't be so sure

Ivory towers just make the management even more intent on getting rid of you such that they're willing to pay thousands to get rid of you, hire someone knew and fix the problems with the code.

I've known quite a few people over the years who thought like you and they were all ultimately fired unceremoniously. I hope it doesn't happen to you, but don't count on obfuscation as job security.

3. Tenure is a wonderful thing when you have it

(but not so hot when you are trying to get it). Of course having said that, it would be just my luck that my whole university goes belly up.

and we THINK he's ok because he's in a pretty secure field - adult and technical ed - BUT the university's cutting everything - no raises, no travel, more for insurance, and on and on and on. if i may ask, what area are you in?

Sorry I did not reply sooner. I did not see your question until long after you posted it. I was somewhat joking about my University going belly up, but one never knows in this terrible economic climate.

6. out of the nine adults in my family

four are unemployed as a result of bush's policies and the economy. Right before he was elected they were all employed. And we are not low skilled people. Several have desired skilled and college degrees. And I am an unemployed stay at home caregiver. So that makes 3 employed adults for 4 families.

I got an interview this last Monday, but after 2 months, in my field, it's been pretty bad. Tons of letters, faxes, follow-ups, and only one interview so far. Mostly cold resumes sent out.

I'm a network engineer. I was laid off the first of September. It's a really tight job market for the moment.

Mostly specialize in Data Center operations and UNIX. Today marks 7 months since I got laid off from my Security Analyst position.

I've had 1 phone interview and 1 phone screening from a contracting agency, other than that its been pretty dry.

work as much as I want or as little as I want....and when I want...if everyone were self employed (including employee owned private companies) the issue of worker rights would be in the hands of the workers (most of us)

10. I have never feared lossing a job, I do my best and if they don't .....

like It, I can always go somewhere else. I am the Teamsters Union now, and have been working as Mechanic for 24 years. Even if the Teamsters dried up and blew away tomorrow I am sure I could still find another job. It is not who you work for it, it is the effort that keeps you going, you have to believe in what you are doing and that it is a worthwhile thing.

How come there wasn’t a category for “not too worried about it” ?

14. I felt real secure a few months ago

I was doing a great job. I was making a good contribution. Then a new CFO was hired. He came into my office at 9:00 AM one morning and told me that my job had been moved to the East Coast.f I had 30 minutes to pack up and leave.

So don't feel secure even if your doing a great job.

I have a full time job that pays poorly, has great benefits and is very secure. I have a part time job that pays very well, has no benefits, and I don't really know if the organization will still exist 6 months from now. I have a home business that has never made any money.

Then again, there have been less orders lately so we've been working less hours. I thought that this was suppose to be the busy season but we've had two unpaid Fridays off in the past month and a half. The primary owner is committed to maintaining the business but the other owner, an evil rich capitalist, seems to be making more decisions lately. There are two temps that should have been hired on full time months ago, but for some reason the company isn't hiring them. On the other hand, they have hired two workers from outside the company since then (I am convinced though that at least one of them is a spy for the secondary owner.). I have a unique job function so I will be there if they do a major lay off but stay in business. I am looking for another job, but secuirty isn't the issue. My workplace is a seriously disfunctional dictatorship.

18. My job is very secure

It's not a great job, but I'm in no jeopardy of losing. I work part time in the public library system. It's a county job and the library isn't going anywhere. It'll be there as long as I want it, which definitely won't be forever. I go to college as well and live at home, so I don't have a ton of expenses to worry about.

because I've been investing in real estate many years and in securities (both stocks and bonds) wisely. My concern is making sure I can pass it on to my two sons. Massive public debt though, along with an economy leaking jobs and of course, a foreign policy based on war and dominance at times can put anyone's financial security at risk.

21. My wife was Bushwacked (laidoff) yesterday

Now, neither of us have a job and both of us are over 55. She worked there for 15 years. We need to get organized and draw attention to our situation. We are the face of the economic reality. We ought to write our representatives and senators and Bush and say "Hey, I can't get a job in America how about a job in Iraq?"

I was thinking maybe we ought to start a "Pink Star Campaign" In the second world war if you lost a son in the war you were given a kind of bunting type thing that you hung in your window. We could have the Pink Stars (pink for like pink slip).

We need to stop taking this bullshit laying down. We should be having demonstrations for jobs. That would be a dilemna for Chimp boy.
