5. Can I talk about how in my son's school the separation of church and state

is being completely ignored, and how my son is being "punished for bad behavior" by not being called on by the teacher to lead the class in prayer before lunch.


This IS a public school, and I don't know what to do.

Can I talk about how my teacher told my son she would hurt him really bad but if she did she would get fired and go to jail?

Mississippi really sucks sometimes, and I want to move. It's been a really shitty, shitty, shitty day.

I am desparate for advice...and it gets worst.

Since I don't fit into the round hole of Southern Baptism and Republican Party-ism in my son's school district, his teacher is taking her angst with me out on my son.

Remarks my teacher has made to my son:

(My son's school district uses corporal punishment. Parents who don't like it have to turn in an alternative discipline plan to the office; I did.) "I really want to hurt you badly right now, but if I did I would lose my job and go to jail."

And:

(She put her hand on my son's throat when he was in bathroom line--it hurt him. He said, "Please don't choke me.) She responded, "Oh how I wish I could do much more than choke you."

Two days ago:

"You don't have your DEAREST MOMMY here to protect you and tattle on me now, do you?

BTW, my son is NINE YEARS OLD!!

Why have I not done anything? Check out the Lisa Hertzahl case in Mississippi--I think the final "punishment" she recieved was death threats and her house burned down, or at least threats of it.

And anyway, what can I do? How can I handle it without becoming the scourge of my community.

I am in crisis mode.

27. Talking to the superintendent tomorrow morning....

Going to spill my educated guts to him {I ain't no illiterate redneck!) and then place the ball firmly in his court with this question:

"What do you, as the executive director, plan to do to remedy these problems?"

(By the way, this school system just made headlines today because they settled out of court a lawsuit in which a CHILD IN SPECIAL ED WAS BEATEN by three students three times, and the mother complained, yet the school system did NOTHING to stop the beatings.)

Anyway, I am going to tell him EVERYTHING (and I could write a book!!) and then let him tell me what the remedy will be. Then I will make the next decision.

Homeschooling WILL be an option.

28. That situation is truly intolerable

I understand your reluctance to stir up trouble, but you can't keep your son in that environment as it is. He's only 9 years old and to have a teacher abuse him — and that is DEFINITELY abuse — will cause him irreparable harm. And if you don't step in to save him, and at his age that is your responsibility to rescue him, he'll lose his trust in you. I'm sure you realize that and that's why your'e in crisis mode.

The question is how to fix it with the least amount of damage. Since it's one teacher in particular, can you get him transferred out of her class Are there other school choices in you area? Is home schooling an option? What about moving?

Just cause that extreme case happened to one person doesn't necessarily mean it will happen to you. What about talking to the principal? Even if he's a fundy I would hope he wouldn't tolerate such abuse of students in his school. What about the school board?

Maybe if you caved a little on the religion aspect (which sucks because it has no business in a public school setting) and just went after the teacher on abuse. She certainly doesn't sound fit or stable to be treating a child like that.

the teacher doesn't go balistic when my 9-yr-old finally is asked to pray, and he responds with a Choctaw or Chickasaw prayer to the great spirit.

REally, I will let that go.

The abuse thing, and my son saying things like "I don't know why I exist. I am bad" are resolved.

I guess I want her called to the carpet. Am I asking too much? I will go to the DOE if it isn't resolved tomorrow.

and start standing up for and protecting your son. I could in no way allow my son to be in such a hostile environment and left in the care of an obviously imbalanced woman. Putting her hand around his throat is outrageous and I can't believe you haven't visited school officials before now. Please don't send him to school anymore until you get this issue resolved. Arrange for his homework to be left in the front office so he can stay current. You also need to get him into counseling immediately and let the school know that is your intention. This will bring a professional into your court and become somewhat of an advocate for your son when dealing with the school.

As a parent, you have a direct say to pick the teacher your student is asigned too. In fact, some teachers can handel difrent studens better than others. You will want to talk to the spechal education department and have your child moved to another class. The student progrees review will alow you to pow-wow with the teachers, faculty, and speculist to dicided how best to use the schools recorses, which is your desision.
