Edwards Pitches College Plan as Pact Between Generations
POSTED: 3:45 p.m. EDT October 14, 2003
CONCORD, N.H. -- Casting his college tuition plan as a promise from one generation to another, Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards told teenagers Tuesday that they deserve the same opportunities he had achieving success.
Before the North Carolina senator arrived at Concord High School, his staff distributed coupons "good for one free year of college tuition" to the students. The small print read: "Only valid if John Edwards is elected President" and "This offer definitely can be combined with other Edwards for President policies."
Edwards' $3 billion-a-year "College for Everyone" plan would provide one year of free tuition at state schools or community colleges for students who agree to work 10 hours a week. He described it as part of a larger effort to ensure today's children inherit a strong nation from their adult leaders. ............
