The prosecution said that investigations are under way into allegations that senior officials of the National Election Commission (NEC) have received bribes from companies that supplied their new automated ballot counters.
The Seoul District Prosecutors¡¯ Office summoned the head of an information technology company, which developed the automatic ballot counting system, Wednesday for questioning over suspicions that he offered bribes to NEC officials to win the 7.5 billion won ($6.25 million) contract. The ballot counters were first used in the December presidential election.

However, more disputes may be in sight for the automatic ballot counting system as an NEC official, who was in charge of evaluating the new ballot counting system, is arguing the system was adopted without a thorough evaluation. He also claimed the system may even cause a chaos in next year¡¯s general elections because it has flaws.
``In just three and a half hours, I saw 15 invalid votes get counted as valid,¡¯¡¯ Han Young-soo, an NEC official at its Kangdong-gu office, told The Korea Times during an interview yesterday. ``The number would have been much greater if I had watched the counting from early morning,¡¯¡¯ he added.
After finding such faults in the system, Han advised the NEC to reevaluate the ballot counting system more thoroughly before completely replacing the hand-counting system with the automatic one, he said.
He claimed that the suggestion was completely ignored.
