"SLICK Chavez" on CNN! Did you SEE that?? Giving Oil to MA??
What Hugo Chavez is doing is a wonderful thing. Supplementing heating oil for the poor folks in MA who were not granted any US Federal aid for it this winter. So with much fanfare in MA his representative is there along with Joseph Kennedy explaining how this helps the poor and strapped folks of MA. Cut to CNN anchor bunnies calling Hugo "Slick" , totally denigrating his help and that he is trying Hard to be... set your puke reflex....
A POPULIST PRESIDENT LIKE gwbush!!!

:puke: :puke: :puke:

I tell you those folks are getting big bucks from the WH to spread that manure.

He delivered for a few sections around Boston. If Bush* did that and made a big deal about it we'd be on him about pulling a stunt too.

Not to mention Chavez telling his people that we're planning on invading Venezuela...another parallel.

Sorry, I don't have to like what this guy does just because he calls Bush* a fascist.

We're waiting.

The argument from feigned impatience generally doesn't compel. For instance, I wasn't convinced there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq just because right-wing pundits were acting like the case was already made the inspectors were wasting time.

18. William Delahunt brokered this deal for his constituents, actually.
Did it months ago. It's carried locally as a project Delahunt initiated, and it's spun as Chavez's idea outside the state. Joseph Kennedy was also a factor in this arrangement:

Delahunt brokers Venezuela oil deal
By DAVID SCHOETZ
STAFF WRITER
A deal sparked during an August sit-down in Caracas between the Cape's congressman and a Venezuelan president known for stormy relations with the Bush administration will help thousands of Bay State residents pay record heating bills this winter.

Two Massachusetts nonprofit groups yesterday signed a contract with Citgo Petroleum Corp., the Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, to supply more than 12 million gallons of discounted home heating oil to the state's low-income population, starting next month.

Citizens Energy Corp. will deliver 9 million gallons directly to income-eligible customers at a 40 percent discount, saving residents an estimated $10 million.
(snip)

Joseph P. Kennedy II, chairman of Citizens Energy, challenged American oil executives to follow suit.

''I wrote every single oil company asking them to give us a little break on the price of oil after they made tens of billions, if not hundreds of billions of dollars in one quarter,'' Kennedy said. ''I didn't hear back from one of them. The only one that came back was Citgo.''

Thousands in Mass. to get cheaper oil
Delahunt, Chávez help broker deal
By Michael Levenson and Susan Milligan, Globe Correspondent and Globe Staff | November 20, 2005

A subsidiary of the Venezuelan national oil company will ship 12 million gallons of discounted home-heating oil to local charities and 45,000 low-income families in Massachusetts next month under a deal arranged by US Representative William D. Delahunt, a local nonprofit energy corporation, and Venezuela's president, White House critic Hugo Chávez.

The approximately $9 million deal will bring nine million gallons of oil to families and three million gallons to institutions that serve the poor, such as homeless shelters, said officials from Citizens Energy Corp., which is signing the contract. Families would pay about $276 for a 200-gallon shipment, a savings of about $184 and enough to last about three weeks.

The contract is to be signed Tuesday by officials from Citizens Energy, based in Boston, and CITGO, a Houston-based subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela SA. The contract was arranged after months of talks between Delahunt, a Quincy Democrat active in Latin American affairs, and Chávez, a leftist former paratrooper and fierce critic of the Bush administration.
(snip)

When the discounted oil arrives early next month, Citizens Energy -- whose chairman and president, former US representative Joseph P. Kennedy II, also helped arrange the contract -- will screen recipients with the help of local organizations that serve the poor. Some 350 local dealers will then distribute three-fourths of the oil to local families.

37. Guess What? I'm Not Anti-Chavez
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 09:51 PM by Crisco
I applaud his policies towards the poor and other indigenous in Venezuela.

During the 2002 coup, I was the first person on DU to speculate that Hugo 'pulled a feint' as I put it, and appeared to willingly go along with those who wanted him out of the palace long enough to let the coup leaders show themselves and for the fascists they are.

Hugo Chavez is a lot of things, one of them is not stupid. If this Massachusetts deal (and the others he's offered) wasn't giving the Bush administration a black eye, I don't know that I'd think he'd be doing it. So, yes, I'm enjoying this. And I'm enjoying the fact the less well-off in Massachusetts are going to benefit. I doubt very much they will spend much time reflecting on the generosity of Mr. Chavez or counting him in their prayers. Rather, it's the national and international publicity he gets that's to VZ's benefit. As long as he keeps pulling these harmless stunts, there's not much the BFEE can do to push him out of office as blatantly as they tried the last time.

Politics is showbiz.

42. According to film Rev will not be televised, he didn't pull feint
The coup leaders threatened to drop bombs on him and his cabinet if he didn't leave Miraflores. He was willing to give himself up so the rest of his government wouldn't be murdered.

he was almost murdered on the beach that night but talked everyone down.

Also, given Chavez's consistency in expressing his convictions about poverty and opportunity and politics and economics in so many policies that have nothing to do with bush, I don't know why he'd suddenly be motivated by such a shallow goal of wanting to give Bush a black eye. That'd be inconsistent with the rest of his actions.

21. Since Democrats were involved in working this arrangement out
with Chavez, after they tried with the big oil companies and were simply ignored, this is going to ALSO go down as a completely useful and helpful action by Massachusetts Democratic Congresspeople.

Good for them for keeping those doors open to decent dialogue with the people-supported Venezuelan administration Bush has been trying to destroy.

As for his opinion of poor people, no one has to go any further than to remember one of his college professors told a reporter he maintained that the poor are simply lazy, and create their own hardship.

With his party's control over Diebold voting, they can always manufacture the support of the "poor" at election time. He really has no concern or respect for those unlucky enough to be born into true poverty.

Chavez has a history of fighting to protect the people crushed by greedy, racist, brutal oligarchies. Bush insults the poor, and makes their lives harder.

Good old Democrats, right?
Citgo may bring discounted heating oil to R.I.
Low-income customers in Massachusetts, and possibly in Rhode Island as well, will get oil at a lower-than-market price.
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 23, 2005
BY TIMOTHY C. BARMANN
Journal Staff Writer

Low-income households in Rhode Island may receive discounted home heating oil provided by Citgo Petroleum Corp. this winter.
(snip)

The company said it plans to offer similar heating assistance programs in New York and in other states, although it has not offered any other details.

A letter sent by a Citgo executive last week to Sen. Jack Reed said the company is interested in providing assistance to the Ocean State.
(snip)

The letter was sent as a response to a letter Reed wrote to Citgo, and to several other major oil companies, last month. In light of the industry's record profits in the third quarter, Reed asked the energy companies to donate 10 percent of their profits to heating assistance programs.
(snip)

(Reed has also introduced legislation that would establish a windfall profit tax on excess oil profits. Those efforts have failed in the Senate.)

Citgo was the only company to respond to his letter, Reed said in an interview yesterday.

equate America with everything that is right and good in the world. If someone threatens a traditional American value (made up by the MSM), then Boosh's mouthpieces spring into action. History will not look kindly on the MSM or anyone who helped Boosh stay in power in the media.

That's ludicrous. GW Bush and his Administration are not only *not* populists, they're the opposite of populists.

I do agree that this is a "slick" move by Chavez, though. He's playing a little PR game inside the US itself, rather than just sitting back and letting the US media turn him into the new Castro-style bogeyman. It's a wise move on his part.

But GW Bush the populist? Christ that's just hilarious.

I live in MA, and Joe Kennedy started Citizens Energy a number of years ago to help poor people who can't afford their heating bills.
