On Edit:

What's wrong with me? Fred Phelps is as much a symptom of America's poisoness culture of homophobic bigotry as he is a cause.

Why am I turning into Lord of All Things Homophobia?

i've seen a lot of shit in the world lately, but this is incredible. he's been a resident at a special school for the developmently disabled--that likely means at least some MR--and he's been sentenced for fifteen years for a "crime" he committed while a juvenile. this is utterly absurd. that prosecuter, that judge, and anyone else actively on the wrong side of this case should be beaten within a millimeter of their lives, if not further. fucking *literally.*

2. Doubt if he's the cause, but a symptom.
Middle America can't let women decide what is best for themselves yet. Unfortunately many of the women support this.

3. I worked in a facility...
For the developmentaly-disabled once, many years ago. Sexual acts between the residents were quite common once the lights went out.

For some of them, it was the only kind, affectionate human contact they ever had in their lives.

5. So true, so true. I grew up around these people; my father

administered state programs for them. It gave me great respect for their struggles. We often lived on the grounds, and I have to say, I occasionally saw things.

This is sick, just absolutely disgusting. What a sick world we live in.

Edit: Be aware I am talking about the sentence being sick.

4. Kansas is crazy like that sometimes
When I was at the University of Kansas a few years ago, a friend of mine from Salina told me about his brother in prison, whom he visited monthly...His crime?? He was 22, caught having consensual sex with a 16 y/o, who was his girlfriend...The sentence?? 11 years, 7 of it mandatory, IIRC...The girlfriend even testified on his behalf, but the prosecutors would hear none of it...Say what you will about the potential immorality or exploitation of sex with a minor, but no way should he have gotten 11 years...He might as well have robbed McDonalds or shot somebody...

6. Not Fred, but the KS AG is basically Phelps with an expensive haircut
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 10:34 PM by hatrack
Phill Kline, that is (love that double-L "Phill", don't you?).

I knew him 20 years ago, when he was a BMOC and your basic frat-boy power tool.

He's added a nice blow-dry look to his original Nuremberg-ish charm, and he weekly blows gaskets over this or that Burning Moral Issue, typically involving sex, abortion, the Internet, child pornography, prison rape and Jesus. His ideal Burning Moral Issue is one containing all the preceding, though he hasn't managed to combine Jesus, prison rape and the Internet just yet.

Oh, and he also appointed his nephew to a gig as his driver, although the nephew is still on probation for a drug bust. But it wasn't nepotism - Phill Kline said so!

On edit - God, I'm so glad I don't live there anymore!

7. Ew
The Kansas AG looks like a Republican, and of course we know he iso one. I don't mean to stereotype, but he seriously does look like one with that hairstyle and look. Btw, it is completely unfair to sentence gay and straight offenders differently for the same crime fo statutory rape.

9. Gee, ablaze with moral purpose and righteous rectitude, ain't he?
I'll bet he can snap a tire iron in half with his butt cheeks - what do you think?

8. As nice as it would be to blame Phelps
for once he isn't at fault. Frankly, I thought this kid was a goner until I read the US Supreme Court had remanded the case. While the AG has to defend the law (it is his job) he doesn't have to make ludricrous arguments while doing so. But, Phelps is not, for once, to blame for a Kansan being stupidly homophobic.
