Iraqi fighters battle with U.S. forces in the streets of Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, on Friday. A midnight clash with Shiite militants in the same location left three U.S. military policemen and nine Iraqis dead.

KARBALA, Iraq, Oct. 17 — Three U.S. military policemen were killed and seven were wounded in a midnight clash at a Shiite Muslim cleric’s headquarters in Karbala. Ten Iraqi policemen and militants also were killed. Separately, a bomb blast killed one U.S. military policeman and wounded two in the Baghdad area Friday morning, the U.S. military said.
