Whoopi
I had avoided watching this Sitcom as it seemed from its ads to be a painful rehashing of stupid archetypes thrown together as a vehicle for a big name (?) star. I caught an episode last night while waiting for Will & Grace to come on, and was pleasantly surprised by the in-your-face, somewhat ascetic, ascerbic and yeah, a bit shrill political commentary. Whoopi let Bush really have it last night, and I was surprised to see this in prime time.

In this show, she portrays a one-hit-wonder former diva who got out of the music business and opened a small hotel in New York. Far from being the cutesy pleasant centerpiece of the show, Whoopi is caustic, bitter, chain smokes, drinks and bitches her way through the episode. She is a staunch liberal, and very outspoken about this. Her brother is directly the opposite, a conservative republican, married to this white woman who has to talk and act like a "sister".

Anyway, in last night's episode, the president is in some kind of public appearance, and comes into her hotel to use the can. She sputters prior to meeting him about just how much she hates him, how badly he has screwed up the country, destroyed the economy and basically hitting all of the liberal talking points about the suitability of Bush to run the country and what he has done to it. She says she is really going to give it to him when she sees him. When he finally comes in to use the bathroom (he is seen from behind), he immediately charms her by mentioning how he was a fan of her song that was a hit. She falls for his charm, becomes all smiles, and her anger and disgust for him becomes unspoken. Her exchange with him is filmed and later shown on network TV. After he leaves, she is ashamed that she did not tell him exactly how she felt, and kicks herself for being swayed by trivialities having nothing to do with his performance as president. In this way, Whoopi was making a rather subtle commentary on the state of the media today.

Anyway though the course of the show, she gets invited to some sort of appearance by Bush, and she is all set to blast him and tell him exactly what is on her mind. At the appearance, she meets one other black couple who congratulate her on coming out Republican. She is totally miffed by this, declaring her liberal leanings. A verbal fracas ensues, and the conservatives start bleating "Get her out of here, she is going to trash the president!" During the ensuing confusion, she manages to vocalize the absurdity of a black Republican, essentially wondering WHY a black person who has been screwed every which way by the conservatives would be a Republican. She even tells her brother were it not for the Democratic party, he would not be allowed to have his white wife.

True, the show is a bit shrill in typical sitcom fashion, but it was surprising, refreshing and somewhat breathtaking to hear such anti-Bush, anti-conservative rhetoric actually vocalized during prime time.

Catch this in rerun, if you get a chance.

1. We watched for the first time last night
And thought it was very funny. I think it's normally on opposite something we watch on Tuesdays, so we hadn't seen it yet (plus, like you, I'd read the same reviews, which made me leery of it, for whatever reason). I think it's the funniest thing she's done in a long time. I'd definitely watch it again.

3. I've seen several episodes
They all have a liberal attitude. My favorite was the one that zinged the color coded terror alert. I think you will see the alert posted in the background on every episode.

4. Whoopi is resotring my appreciation for her.
I think the show is good. There are some problems with developing the characters, but the thrust is very good and I wish the show luck. Whoopi has seemed down in the dumps for years and I hope this turns things around.

5. Is it better than the trailers?
The trailers for it haven't interested me at all.
And I'm thinking maybe this is intentional; that the network doesn't have the nerve to put the good stuff in the ads

7. They dropped this in where that shitty Coupling show was
NBC must want the Whoopi show to be seen, if they dropped it in where the excrement on video show Coupling occupied.

Speaking of Coupling, I was watching BBC America, and damned if they didn't have the British version of Coupling on. It was scary to watch. The EXACT same script, verbatim. And still not funny and painful to watch.

Terrible terrible show.

6. I caught it last night too.
I don't see how this show will stay on the air.
It's one long Bush bash - Which I loved by the way, but other than that the writing is awful.

I'm surprised that GE/NBC would be promoting this show the way they are. This episode ran on Tuesday and they already repeated it two days later with advertisements saying something to the effect of "If you didn't catch this episode the first time see it now"

*Whoopie's joke on black Repubs was this:

"Black Republicans make as much sense to me as Jews for Jesus"

This show is very 'in your face' politically - Something that is desperately needed right now - but I doubt "Whoopi" will make it through a whole season before getting the axe.

8. Whoopi Getting Boost - Coupling Getting Benched
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031015/tv_nm/media_nbc_dc_1

Been watching Whoopi pretty regularly - except I had to switch over and watch 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenager Daughter - had never watched that show but wanted to see John Ritter's last three episodes, so tragic.

I have so far liked the show alot - although it seems to be trying a little too hard - but some great jabs.

Check this out though: Would appreciate your thoughts.
