Does this mean what I think it means?

Russia bares its military teeth

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has said his country does not rule out a pre-emptive military strike anywhere in the world if the national interest demands it. snip

Addressing Thursday's meeting, Mr Putin said Russia had "at her disposal a considerable... stockpile of heavy ground-launched strategic missiles...".

"Their combat characteristics, including the surmounting of any systems of anti-missile defences, are unrivalled," he said.

The president added that the arsenal included many strategic nuclear missiles never before deployed.

1. a response to this?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=171446

"PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE (AP) - The Army activated a brigade Thursday charged with command and control of a $22 billion system intended to protect the nation from a ballistic missile attack.

Some of the soldiers assigned to the Midcourse Defense Brigade, which will have at least 60 Colorado National Guard and active-duty soldiers, will work inside Cheyenne Mountain, home to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD.

If a missile attack was launched, NORAD would notify the brigade, which in turn would provide information on the missiles' location to operators of ''kill vehicles'' based in Alaska and California."

5. Would those defensive missles in Alaska and CA be able to intercept
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 01:38 PM by sinookas
the Russian missles before they hit our armies deployed in Iraq ?
or elsewhere in the middle east?

Seems like a longshot.

And if we couldn't intercept them in time or missed and the Russian missles hit our troops in Iraq how would we invade Iran or Syria ?

Now WHO EXACTLY has made our troops sitting ducks in a hostile region?
And WHO EXACTLY has talked about projecting that military other places in that region. Who is the idiot who has precipitated all this?

Support our troops, bring them home now.

18. They are totally useless
Until we absorb(andthe operative word here is absorb) a wmd strike first.

President Bush refuses to rescind PDD-60, the suicidal presidential decision directive (to the military) to absorb a nuclear first strike and not rely on Launch on Warning, a powerful deterrent to nuclear attack. This telegraphs to Russia, China or any other major power with ICBMs the message, "You get one free attack on the US, so give us all you've got in the first shot."

7. I think he is threatening Chechnia first.
He is saying that they reserve the right to first strike with Nukes just like Bush* said not too long ago. If there was a little warning there for the US , can you blame them? Every country on earth has to rethink their relationship with America. We are like a coiled rattlesnake and Russia is saying they have a gun.

12. Yep
Putin wants to keep a Chechnya on a short leash, so he decided to do it the Dubya way.

...and other Russian problems closer to home.

14. Why does Russia need missiles to nuke one of its own provinces?
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 01:53 PM by NNN0LHI
Wouldn't a bomb dropped from a plane do the job just as well? And I don't think Chechnia has any missle defense system either.

3. What do you think it means?
If you think that it means that Russia has now adopted the 'Bush Doctrine', you are right. Watch for MANY nations across the globe to do the same. Bush has made the world a far more dangerous place for everyone.

8. absolutely - and the Russians wanting to sell oil in euros
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 01:41 PM by phoebe
is a not so subtle warning that they are unhappy with the US - after all Saddam wanted to sell oil in euros.

China's launching of a covert spy satellite right now under cover of space exploration (though you'd have to be pretty stupid not to see that scenario from a mile off)is also a pretty good indication of what they think of the glorious (sic) Bush "doctrine".

Let's face it, why spend money on sending troops to Iraq when you need to cover all your own self-interests in preparation for whatever * can think of next..

6. Holy shit!
THIS lays at the feet of Bush! Every country, from here on out, who gets a hair up their ass about something is going to play that pre-emptive attack card. Thank You Bush, you son-of-a-*&%$%!! Costa Rica is looking better and better to me. :scared:

11. I guess Pooty Pute doesn't like
being made to play dress up with Georgie Boy and running around Camp David looking like the Man from UNCLE. You could see him grinding his teeth during the press conference, when Georgie Boy was slapping him on the back and telling everybody how much he really likes Pooty Pute.

Between this and the euro kick in the teeth, I think Putin is showing Georgie Boy what good friends they really are.

13. It's our own damn fault
To the yahoos who claim that what I've said is typical of the "blame America first crowd" I say F**K YOU.

It is our own damn fault, we opened a Pandora's Box, that had been shut as a result of decades of careful diplomacy. The former Soviet Union was a Superpower, with all the resources a continental size country commands. It still has sizable arsenal. It is still a formidible opponent.

If anyone thinks that they will sit idly by while we trash all the good work that has been is seriously deluded. They are just giving us a taste of our own medicine.

Of course, this now gives the Republicans an excuse to start hating Russians all over again. They don't have Clinton to kick around anymore. It's hard to get worked up hating the Frence.

Coming soon "Godless Commies Part II"

16. It means that
It means that having the Americans this close to Russia is always cause for a reiteration of the strength of the Russian bear.

Keep in mind that the majority of the worlds energy is in that region, and Putin is still probably cheesed off from losing that billion dollar deal with Iraq when the invasion started. What is right next door to the former USSR? Iran.

When the stakes get this high, always let the other guy know you still have the nukes and are willing to use them.

This is not that big of a deal, seeing the remarks Dubya has been making about modernizing the US's nuclear arsenal.
