That BOXCUTTER story: an act of political activism?
we know that it was not related to 'real' terrorists.

CBS just reported that there was a letter (not a note as previously reported) assailing the uselessness of airport/airline security. it was clay, not explosives. this was a demonstration.

I believe this was an act of specific political activism, exposing the utter sham of "homeland security" under BushCo. And it was extraordinarily successful. It got HUGE coverage.

I hope it's one of many. It makes Ridge look ridiculous. It makes repukes that voted against cargo searches ridiculous.
(If some moran can ship himself to his parents and not be detected, how safe to you feel about what in the cargo hold under your feet the next time you fly?)

If they are found, they should be hailed as patriots. They obviously knew that security was inadequate.

BushCo will revile them because (like the husband of a previously covert CIA operative could tell you) they don't like to be exposed for their lies and failures.

Americans should applaud them for showing them the truth about how 'secure' their homeland is under these criminals.

2. How do you know this wasn't a manufactured "orange level" distraction
designed to muck up the fear that has settled.

If anyone I would think this was the Bushies reminding us how unsafe we are from those "Godless, short Godded, Idol worshipping, evil Muslims who want to kill us for our freedoms. </sarcasm>"

4. if that were true....

they would have STOPPED something from getting ON a plane.

this just SUCKS for BushCo. no positive spin for the protectors of 'homeland security'

7. Positive spin for the justification of war
and that's what they need and they are appealing only to the lowest base fears in people's psyche... tapping into the fear of flying/heights/persecution and using it for political benefit.

that could have also been, the department of
Fatherland security, either in tests of the system, or
as a way to scare the living daylights of the sheeple, who
are no longer paying attention to the darn cute terror alerts

6. see post #4

this is a 100% losing scenerio for BushCo.

I mean, BOXCUTTERS and a fake BOMB... ??? trying to REMIND people about massive security failure???

whoever did this is TAUNTING them.

I just can't believe that they could be involved.

there's no PROFIT. economical or political. and they don't do things unless they believe they'll profit...

9. There's BIG PROFIT for the military industrialists
Keep the sheeple terrorized and they'll agree to cede security to the state. With the voting machines fixed, the media in their back pocket and dissent viewed as treason, this kind of "reminder" of the extreme peril every American faces pays dividends galore.

19. "Testing" the security system?
I kinda favor the hypothesis that someone, likely a government agency (FBI? CIA?), is testing airline security covertly to see how well the new measures are working (rather poorly, apparently...) If so, it would be interesting to know whether this is sanctioned at high levels, or whether a particular agency is "freelancing" to make one of their rival agencies look bad...I'm not sure I buy the fear argument for now - why damage airlines further by scaring away customers...?

22. Why not?
Especially if it's a rival agency and their agents are "freelancing". Who knows, though, I could be totally wrong...

8. The Box Cutter Myth - planted by the Barb Olsen disinfo
Six myths of 9/11
What you think you know about Sept. 11 but don’t

Excerpt:
FINAL MOMENTS
2. The misconception: We know how the hijackers seized the planes. Within days of Sept. 11, Americans believed they knew how the planes were grabbed: Terrorists had taken control by stabbing pilots, passengers, and flight attendants with box cutters and knives.

What’s wrong with the story: It’s incomplete and misleading. We don’t really know what happened on the planes. The cockpit voice recorder survived neither New York crash and was damaged beyond salvage in the Pentagon crash. The Flight 93 voice recorder doesn’t start until several minutes after the hijackers took the plane. What little we know about tactics and weapons comes from phones calls made by passengers and flight attendants. As Edward Jay Epstein has pointed out, the evidence is incredibly paltry. No one on United Flight 175, which crashed into the World Trade Center, reported anything about weapons or tactics. One flight attendant on American Flight 11, which also crashed into the World Trade Center, said she was disabled by a chemical spray, while another flight attendant said a passenger was stabbed or shot. On the Pentagon plane, American Flight 77, Barbara Olson reported hijackers carrying knives and box cutters but did not describe how they took the cockpit. And on United Flight 93, passengers reported knives but also a hijacker threatening to explode a bomb. The box cutter-knives story isn’t demonstrably false, but it serves to divert attention from the other weapons and to mask the fact that we don’t have any idea how the hijackings happened.

they would let the MYTHIC boxcutters to escape detection.

15. Bah!
You think an activist is going to risk prosecution and possible execution for a stunt?

The only one who would take the risk to execute this is someone who has enough control to know he will not be caught.

what is the positive spin for bushco to be behind it???

I can't see it. this was a kick in the BALLS. they can prosecute whoever did it, but not without getting HOURS of bad press on their 'homeland security' (you know, the 'trust us to tell you when to fear for your life and we'll keep you safe department of treasury transfer')

11. That was my first impression when I read the story.
Activism. A demonstration. I don't know about anyone else here, but I'd really like to know exactly what the DHS is actually DOING!

On the ground I see no change in our level of security in this country -- especially since so many of our National Guard and Reservists who've been hijacked by this war, were formerly employed as first responders in our communities.

personally, I'm beginning to think the Dept. of Homeland Security is part of some giant shell game with our money.

Don't you think the note would have been in Arabic? That'd scare the sheeple into signing away a few more civil liberties!

I suspect a domestic taunt of some kind.

14. "taunt" ???????????

it was a KICK IN THE BALLS. full, FULL media coverage. from the initial hysteria to the fact that it was designed to EXPOSE the lack of security.

as Byrd so eloquently spoke on the floor of the Senate today:

the emperor has no clothes, and his ministers are equally naked in their complicity.

17. it demonstrates that real terrorists could have done this any time
if they wanted to.

Was there anything going on with reducing these contracts? I could see money for air security being increased as a direct result of this event.

Who benefits from this is what we are all asking.

BushCo will bailout the airlines (at least the CEOs, screw the workers--but that's hardly limited to transportation workers)

as for our time... perhaps it's a good thing to be reminded that the current administration does NOTHING to protect people.

i could be wrong...

28. And who is mad at Bush? Lots of suspects?
Who did we hear might be throwing monkey wrenches into his path? What happened to all the talk about the CIA having declared Bush a cointelpro target?

And what of the air marhals. Didn't they get their numbers reduced a few months ago?

Gotta admit, that stuff looked like it was planted to cause maximum panic. I don't believe osama did it.

Any one else suspicious? Am I ever going to trust anyone's motives again?
