Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 11:06 PM by KoKo01
Syria? Does anyone know if Nato could move against US if we allow Israel to bomb or invade Syria?

I know there was a change in NATO about a year ago. Bush wanted us to have a lesser role. But, I wondered if anyone has some extensive knowledge of how that might work.

And, if NATO can't stop the PNAC'ers, then who can? Someone may have to step in and stop the maddness that many of us think is being plotted while Bush flies around on his propaganda mission to raise his polls with the "unaware" who think he's "The Great Diplomat."

Who will stop him? Our Congress can't. Senator Byrd said today: "Fie, Fie, Fie on THEM!" He looked close to tears. I worry about his health. I worry about our health...

1. WWIII? I doubt it.
Although someone will eventually challenge us if the BFEE keeps invading countries.

I doubt Iran would trigger that though.

10. It would probably lead to WWIII.
Since Russia, France, Germany, China, North Korea, Pakistan and England all have strategic/non strategic interests in Iran.

2. Anybody could form a coalition and save us, they could have already

But they didn't. Apparently other nations prefer to wait meekly for the bombs to fall on their capitals.

4. Wars are not always
fought with front lines, and jet fighters....as you might have noticed with 911, Afghanistan and Iraq.

And since Bush is now caught between a quagmire, and a sinking economy...anyone who was thinking about it would realize there has been a war to save you and the world...and Bush is losing his PNAC 'empire'.

You were expecting maybe a tank in your back yard??

20. LOL I would like to see them in bush's front yard

and in Cheney's secure undisclosed location.

They don't need to come to my yard. I am an Enemy of the State, at home enough with the technology of my times to collaborate quite effectively by cell phone and email.

3. Without a doubt
If Israel attacks Syria then France will surely unleash an all out attack on Napa valley.

6. Our country has become the Roman Empire.
Since the Soviet Union fell apart, there is no one out there to keep us in line and all along we thought we were the good guys. If the Europeans could unite into a coalition, they possibly could make a reasonable President think twice, but I don't think they would make an impression on Chimp if the UN couldn't. Any other coalition against us is a little too scary to even contemplate.

7. Vote Kucinich. It's our only chance. All the others have already signed
onto the "Attack Iran" plan in one way or another. Everyone besides Kucinich and Sharpton.

Dean, Clark, Kerry, Lieberman, Braun have already signed on.

Edwards- I'd be surprised if he wouldn't.

I don't know what it will take to wake America up!!!

I am not just afraid of Bush for this one. I am afraid of them all.
Clinton, do remember, starved and bombed Iraq incessantly, daily, for 8 years straight as a continuation of Bush I's war.

The script is already being followed. I hope to God we choose wisely and care enough about this issue to put the right man in. We are standing on the brink of a world catastrophe.

We are fooling ourselves if we think any other Democratic candidate out there has the conviction, courage and vision to stop the suicidal course we're on.

Standing at the edge of an abyss named "Catastrophe", we MUST make a 180 degree turn.

Nothing else can save us. No one else will do it for world peace.

I will vote for no one less than the one who can.

Cassandra

9. Tinoire, this is going to happen sooner than the election. Like SOON!
I was trying to think, who might stop Bush. Who has the power. Could NATO do it, if they had to. Bypass the US somehow, by forcing the issue to be: If you try to bomb or invade unilaterally, then we other NATO countries will have to join force to either kick you out, or defy you.

What else could be done? And, with Blair in such deep trouble, I don't think Chimp could count on GB's support. We would be alone. Maybe Chimp could twist Spain's arm, but Aznar is not without his own problems. It would be tricky for Chimp/PNAC to find someone, unless it was Sharon.

14. Sadly :( I am aware of that
but terrified also that if not under Bush, it will be under the next one- regardless of which Party wins unless we get the right guy up there.

Who can stop Bush? Us... We're the only ones who can... It must start with resistance... With people out in the streets... Civil disobedience... Dock workers refusing to load the war goods...

The sad thing is that most of America is still half-asleep and there may not be enough of us.

Even at DU- look how many people, especially now that we've grown, are rationalizing the obscenities that took place in the past and are taking place now.

The only thing we can do is to sound the alarm and hold our representatives feet to the fire. They have gotten the message with the dismal showing of the known war enablers. Most politicians only care about 1 thing- their careeers. We must expose them and repudicate those who enable. I see no other choice and only hope we have the time.

It's either that or well, what the French did a few centuries ago.

It will be Bush and Sharon. I agree and don't think either Spain no England will get support from the people because they don't take this as lightly as we do.

We really are hosed. I am fast losing all hope.

I don't think NATO would because the US basically leads and dicates NATO- that's why DeGaulle withdrew France. NATO is nothing more really than the US and the UK- another imperialist little joke.

Russia and China are about it and the coming EU Army.

We can't even count on the United Nations which is the same joke- pushed

11. no, not really...
No country, is going to threaten the US militarily other than countries who have no power to truly do so, and have no real intention. It really would evolve into WWIII quicker than people may think, that is unless the other countries apologized figurously while running for cover. It would destroy for all intensive purposes those countries attempting, and I'm not even speaking in terms of actual fighting.

13. Well, according to the Bush doctrine of pre-emptive self-defense
any nation that feels threatened by another has the right to defend themselves by attacking first. So it would stand to reason that yes, should any nation, or group of nations feel threatened by the US, they would feel well within their rights to attack first. Whether they actually would do it or not is another question. We're not Iraq, after all.

15. How can people still wonder whether Bush may cause WWIII?
It's already underway. (Or call it WWIV, if you count the Cold War.) How it ends may depend on whether his junta can be dislodged in 2004.

Just because the ICBMs aren't flying doesn't mean it isn't upon us.

16. No,the USA is a member of NATO.
I think the economics of PNAC is going to be it's downfall. They just didn't realise how long it would take to subjugate the Iraqi people. Time is money. Eventually the American people will wake up to the fact that their young are being butchered for oil. Time and money.

17. Well..
the sad truth is that our defense spending accounts for over half of the world's total defense expenditures. NATO without the US would really not be effective. Europe made the choice between guns and butter a long time ago. The only thing the EU really represents is a huge economic bloc and a huge population, all of which are really not united at this point.

18. Not a snowball's chance in hell
NATO depends on the US to survive. What reamins of NATO without the US cannot threaten the US.

The UN couldn't take Rhode Island on it's own, no way they will stare down the US military. If it *did* come to that, the UN would have to blink, or be destroyed. I would see a Chinese invasion as a more likely scenario.

Bush is in control of the most fearsome military power in the history of man. He knows it, everyone else knows it. God help us all.

19. NATO wouldn't do anything
economic ties run too deep to act on any principle.

"Bush and what army?!" really comes to mind as the real question here. Any further provocations would be a bigger disaster than the conditions already existing; a few thousand Pasdaran crossing the border to re-"liberate" Iraq after the first "freedom bombs" drop on purpose? Best case scenario.

No, the real story here is how impotent the shrill barking lately really is.
