Black Box Voting is BACK UP
Just as I was getting so pissed I was about to start naming names all over Slashdot.

Maybe David will explain? I'm going to download my e-mail before they try to shut it down again.

1. qui tam
2. Diebold

I'm leaning toward the former. Keep ears to the ground, keep sending me tips, folks. I've got names now, and I can tell you this stinks to high heaven.

Andy, check your PM.

On edit, Bev--two typos in Ch. 9. Greg Loe (Contoller), rather than "Controller" and "mispent" instead of "misspent."

35. Thanks. I think that was one of my edits
One of the worst things to do is tweak it after it's edited. It ALWAYS seems to introduce new errors.

You might also notice the quote marks are screwball -- my system will make rounded quotes, the fancy advanced system keeps refusing to do them, so when we edit and it has quotes, they aren't the right style. That and other small edits we will catch on the next go 'round.

Chapter 6 also has a screwed up footnote. Really, really appreciate it when people catch the boo-boos.

Open source editing?

38. We often have to make PDF versions of manuals...
... and there are font problems at times. We inherited a system that has a lot of its own versions of TrueType fonts, and those don't always work going through the conversion to Postscript, and through Distiller, even when the font is embedded in the document. Sometimes just a small tweak in the font variant used will make it behave, if it's something Adobe understands.

For example, at the sale of the company, we inherited thousands of documents with a proprietary version of Helvetica, Swiss9. Swiss9 and Helvetica are almost impossible to tell apart, but Adobe choked and gagged on some of the characters. Change `em to Helvetica and it's wysiwyg because that's a standard Adobe font.... For some reason, too, Postscript and Distiller don't like some variants of Times and Thames.

Cheers.

As we begin our black box activism planning next week, I want everyone who signed up to take a good look at Andy (God_bush_n_cheney) and watch how he's stepped up to the plate.

This kind of quiet leadership is very inspirational.

The blockage was this: I was for some unheard-of reason not allowed to move the domain elsewhere. I was for some very suspicious reason blocked from my own FTP server, and the facts on that became so interesting I had to sit down and take a deep breath. And I cannot reinstate at the current location without providing my PHYSICAL LOCATION to the assholes that did this.

Now, I live only two hours drive from the programmer's den in Vancouver and you folks may have seen the corporate history of that place. We made a decision that I would go to an undisclosed location until all chapters of the book are up, and that will be very, very soon.

At that point, it will be back to me and the big black dudes I live with (normally) to handle security.

9. Really.

What threatens us today is fear. Not the atom bomb, nor even fear of it because if the bomb fell on Oxford tonight, all it could do would be to kill us which is nothing, since in doing that it will have robbed itself of its only power over us. Our danger is the forces in the world today which are trying to use man's fear to rob him of his individuality, his soul, trying to reduce him to an unthinking mass of fear and bribery.

29. Keep fighting and beating 'em, Bev!
By the way, I don't know if anyone will have original screen shots of the California Sec. of State's election night results, but I just spent some time over there, and 22 counties have new results since 10-8-03. They are as follows:

10-9 updates:

Merced
Glenn
10-10 updates:
Kern
Plumas

10-13updates:
Kings
Modoc

10-14 updates:
San Bernadino
Trinity
Ventura

10-15 updates:
Orange
Santa Clara
Tuolumne

10-16 updates:
San Diego

10-17 updates:

Alameda
Imperial
Los Angeles
Sacramento
San Francisco
Santa Barbara
Sutter
Tehama

Now I'm not saying there is anything necessarily wrong with updating the numbers, but I think it might be interesting to find out what has changed and how since election night, and also to find out if there were large numbers of changes in those "infallible" voting machine counties, and if so, why?

Anyone have the original results, county by county, on 'em?

32. What's still bugging me about this election...
... is the anecdotal information that large numbers of people were required to vote provisional ballots, and yet, the CA SoS office was making guesses about the numbers. I thought it suspect that their estimates were that the number of provisional ballots was the same as the number of absentees, 450,000.

Any new information on provisional ballot numbers?

Cheers.

50. Provisional and Absentee Ballot #s
This may be duplicate info, but the CA-SoS site has been publishing a daily report of 'estimated' unprocessed ballots by county. If I'm reading it right, the initial estimate was 584156 unprocessed absentees, 309992 unprocessed provisional and 18987 unprocessed damaged for a total estimate of 925675 unprocessed ballots. As of Friday at 5:pm they estimate 481,753 remaining to be counted.

Since first noticing this report on the 15th, I've been saving it each day along with the daily county reports (288 files/day). It'll make an interesting comparison. FWIW, I also captured the County status reports for each published change in the first couple of hours or so, as well as selected changes since then.

The unprocessed ballots report appears to be issued daily, and is issued using the same filename each day. (Don't forget to rename them if you archive them)http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/2003_unprocessed_ballots.pdf

Hope this is of some help. If you need more info - shout!

51. This is helpful...
... but still odd, for this reason. In a normal state election (with all polling places in operation), the SoS office estimates ~250,000 provisional ballots. Now, with this one, with half the polling places open, and many more reports of screw-ups in voter lists at polling places because of the location changes, the provisional ballots are only slightly more than expected.

I wonder how many provisional ballots have been disallowed? After all, it has to be determined that the provisional ballot is legitimate before it can be counted. Any data on that?

Cheers.

Actually, even though only half the polling places were open, it seems to me that turnout was similar to that in a presidential race.

41. ISP has agreed to let site up
until we find new digs, though I still can't get into mail. I have sent a new request on this.

I explained that it was in his best interest to put the site back up as people were going to continue to complain every time the "suspended" page came up. I have since posted a request for folks to stop sending abusive and/or threatening emails to them.

Of course, we would still like our email back, and *polite* requests for such, when accompanied by expressions of gratitude for allowing the site up, are a different matter.

Am I happy? No. Do they deserve gratitude? No. But, it's called diplomacy and it can get you what you want.

(Somebody explain this to George Bush).
