CNN Kobe obsession is embarassing.
The daily deaths of our soldiers and the raping of America should be top drawer items for the "news" service but they seem to want to dwell on a single sexual assault case. Speaks volumes of our nation.

11. Yes it will. Have you ever talked to "regular" run of the mill Americans?
I have. There is a person that works with me and whom I like a lot (he is a really nice guy). We started talking about politics and, of course, he started blaming Clinton and his "lack of morality" for all our ills. I asked him if it was more moral to lie about reasons for war, to give contracts to your friends, to forget about the poor, to foster jobs leaving America, etc. etc. He replied "says who?" I asked him, because he is an Information Technology person, if he ever went to the web and tried to read something that did not come from the "mainstream" press. He said "no, I rather believe my president."
So yes they will make people forget. Sorry.

7. Earlier this year when the corporate media
was fixated on Laci, my SO and I were at the home of some friends - one of whom works for a major tv network. The conversation turned to whether or not Scott was guilty. My SO, who doesn't watch tv news, didn't know what they were talking about and said so. Everyone was shocked and made statements like, "You don't know who Laci is? You must be from another planet." When told she was a murder victim from Modesto his respose was "And this is news? People are murdered every day. We're murdering thousands in Iraq. Why isn't anyone talking about that?" One of those uncomfortable "Elephant in the room no one want to talk about" moments set in and the subject was quickly changed.

Amazing that Americans fall for this Kobe, Laci crap. A juicy story to distract them from the real news is just what Rove ordered.

12. Not Sinister, Just Television
The cable networks aren't fixated on Kobe Bryant and the Laci Peterson murder because they get their marching orders from a political operative. They are fixated on those cases because the former involves a high-profile sports figure accused of a sex crime and the latter involves (from the news snippets I've seen/heard) a pregnant woman being murdered on Christmas Eve, allegedly by her philandering, Nazi-friendly husband. That's it. You have to look at it from a ratings and market share perspective, because those are the two things that TV producers look at. Do you honestly think any 24 hour news network is going to lighten up on the Kobe/Peterson sagas after the entire nation was captivated by the O.J. Simpson trial for months and years?

It's not that there is "nothing else worth reporting"... which is a bogus excuse for lazy journalism, as most major networks get all their stories from either the AP, or other news outlets, or from their local affiliates. A friend of mine who works at the AP has consitantly seen his minutes read VERBATIM on CNN, FNC, MSNBC, etc. It's that sex and murder get the highest ratings. And if throw in a basketball star, a preganant woman, a cheating husband, and Neo-Nazis, you have an instant recipe for the lowest common denominator. This isn't Rove-inspired news, its Springer-inspired news.

5. Is there nothing we can do about CNN?
Fox is Fox, and MSNBC seems hopeless, and attracts very few viewers. Al Gore's network is a question right now. CNN, of the 24-hour news networks, is all we have. They advertise themselves as "America's Most Trusted News Source," and insist that "real news" is what they offer. Is there any way we can hold them to the standards they trumpet? Is there any way they could be convinced that covering the news seriously and fairly might be worth trying in order to stop their downward ratings slide? Who is in charge there? Who is their political director, Tom Hannon, about whom I can find nothing in web searches?

6. Tabloid
That is because the tabloid news is a distraction from the war and the recession. Same as the Tonya Harding/Lorena Bobitt crap when they ran NAFTA through in 1993-94.

8. Can't they siphon this crap off
with CNNCourtTV or something like that? I know, they're Corporate News Network and it's fairly hopeless, but Kobe & Peterson news is soooo CourtTV and sooooo NOT essential for me to know.

16. I just emailed them
about their coverage of tabloid "news" and suggested they leave that for Inside Edition. I asked them to cover real news stories - more like Lou Dobbs' "Exporting America" or on the Texas ER regs that no longer require hospitals so see those who cannot pay except in cases of "imminent death" or on Ah-nold's ties to Ken Lay and his irresponsible settling of the lawsuits against the energy companies.

Will they listen? I doubt it. But, I tried and I feel good about that!

18. Do what I did.
I gave my TV a permanent rest....about 5 years ago. The main reason was that the news had become shrill, hysterical, very noisy and in my face. It was almost like the news reporter was shrieking at me. Couldn't stand it, so I turned off the tube and went to the Internet instead. I'm so much happier!

When I go visit my parents, my dad is sitting in front of the TV, zombie-like, with the shrill hysterical news being blasted at him. So I know it was the right decision.

By the way, the news on the Internet is MUCH more unbiased. You have to dig sometimes, but you will find articles that would NEVER be aired. This is about the only place the Ream-publicans can't get their dirty little fingernails in, but I hear they're trying....:smoke:

20. Area Man Constantly Mentioning He Doesn't Own A Television
http://www.theonion.com/onion3604/doesnt_own_television.html

According to Melinda Elkins, a coworker of Green's at The Frame Job, a Chapel Hill picture-frame shop, Green steers the conversation toward television whenever possible, just so he can mention not owning one.

"A few days ago, Annette was saying her new contacts were bothering her," Elkins said. "The second she said that, I knew Jonathan would pounce. He was like, 'I didn't know you had contacts, Annette. Are your eyes bad? That a shame. I'm really lucky to have almost perfect vision. I'm guessing it's because I don't watch TV. In fact, I don't even own one."

According to Elkins, "idiot box" is Green's favorite derogatory term for television.

"He uses that one a lot," she said. "But he's got other ones, too, like 'boob tube' and 'electronic babysitter.'"

Elkins said Green always makes sure to read the copies of Entertainment Weekly and People lying around the shop's break room, "just so he can point out all the stars and shows he's never heard of."

"Last week, in one of the magazines, there was a picture of Calista Flockhart," Elkins said, "and Jonathan announced, 'I have absolutely no idea who this woman is. Calista who? Am I supposed to have heard of her? I'm sorry, but I haven't.'"
