1. Uhhh, one slight problem with CD-R
You can't write as you go.....it's write once.

Where is this CD-R idea suddenly coming from?

3. The idea is mine,
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 12:47 PM by plan9_pub
and I has asked several folks in the biz and they said it was possible. I take it there is dispute?

On edit: I should have been a tad more detailed. As it was explained to me, the "sessions" would record each voting "event", then burn it to disk. Any change in "mode" would also be logged as a session.

The hardware is capable, the software would be special.

9. Even if CD-R is possible
I would still not be able to "see" the data on the CD-R and know that my votes were recorded as I intended. That's a non-negotiable item for me.

The advantage of CD-R I presume would be to make upstream (beyond the DRE terminal) vote data much harder to manipulate without detection. That would be good, but not good enough to dispel my suspicions that the DREs themselves could have hidden code or hidden hardware that would alter my votes as they are being recorded.

5. I did not take a cheap
shot at Alastair, I simply disagreed with how the story was presented. I also then defended why other countries would look at it this way.

6. Alastair is great, David knows it
Alastair, if you have any questions, David would be delighted to send you a transcript. He is thoroughly impressed with what you have achieved.

7. Actually, you can write a track at a time
or a session at a time, until you close the disk.
You can't rewrite what was written, and usualy the table of
contents is written last.

8. True
At least that's how mine works. I've mentioned this in previous threads as well. :)
Once written, it's a permanent record better than a memory card but still not a replacement for a paper ballot!

10. Agreed,
and it becomes the third piece of the record:

magnetic, cd-r, and paper.
