The pronouncement drew applause from participants at the nationwide meeting of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
Moseley Braun said she has seen first-hand the arc of change that occurred in Illinois, her home state, over the course of 20 years.
As a young state House representative in 1982, she filed a bill in Illinois for a moratorium on the death penalty, which made her the target of death threats, she said.
