There's something I just don't understand. Ann Coulter.

Why in God's name does this nutcase get so much media exposure? And taken semi-seriously as a pundit? For instance, this woman has defended Joseph McCarthy and his tactics in the 50's. Not apparently expressing any remorse over the lives ruined and careers destroyed over the blacklisting as a result of McCarthyism.

Ann Coulter is a joke. And should be treated as such. But she's become a pundit. Sometimes when I see her on television, I feel like I've entered a alternate universe where the inmates have been released from the asylum and are making frequent appearances on television.

Sorry if this topic may have been introduced before on the DU. I'm a newbie, and have met a lot of good people here. I'm just tapping into the collective wisdom at the DU to answer a vexing question...namely Ann Coulter's career.

It really should not be any big surprise that she gets the media attention. She is a somewhat attractive, and flashy woman . That is how TV works, and that is how they get people to tune-in. If she was not so easy on the eyes, she would be ignored by all (except FOX news)

I am not familiar with her book, but Ann Coulter must be an idiot if she supported any blacklisting caused by the McCarthy hearings.... especially since any blacklistings were a result of the HUAC hearings (in the House of Representatives) a few years before there were any hearings by Senator McCarthy (in the Senate). She should get her history straight.

Ann is JUST the type of girl (physically) I have picked my whole life.

I mean, just last week on Hardball, after being cornered by another woman who would NOT let up on the question of whether Rush should go to jail/be acccountable legally, Ann finnally blurbed out that she does not want Rush to go to jail "because he is a friend"!

Now HOW Ann can reconcile that personal desire for a "selective application" of the drug laws when it is now a Republican lawbreaker (who just happens to be a friend) is beyond me!

Republicans like Nixon CREATED the DEA and all these silly drug laws, but Ann think Rush should not reap the Republican "blowback" now?

WHAT GALL!

I can't stand her mind, but I can't stop looking at her.
The Republicans have done well with this woman.

She reminds me of, "the white man's she-Devil" in that Undercover Brother movie (though not half as pretty as that girl was), because she just makes us thinking men go blank and the Republicans know it.

... I barely remember the McCarthy era except to recall that my mom watched the hearings while she was doing her ironing and I had to play outside. It's easy to rewrite history when so many people don't either read about it or remember it. Then, so many McCarthy era people are being "pardoned" like Elia Kazan, as if their ratting on others should for some reason be forgiven and forgotten after all these years, even though they have never apologized or attempted to make some restitution for what they did.

Ann fits in well with some part of the American temperament that wants simple, clear-cut answers and tends to believe that America's problems are all caused by folks who aren't "American enough" or "patriotic enough." In addition, Americans distrust anyone who is different, whether outside the "moral" mainstream or the ethnic mainstream. Creativity and intelligence are not honored unless they are in the service of money-making.
