Is it true that none of the black boxes survived 9/11??

And even if we forget the steel, there's the curious incident of the planes' black boxes - not ONE of the EIGHT black boxes - two per plane - survived! Not just those of the planes that crashed into the Twin Towers, but also of the other two planes! Not even of the one that crashed into the ground in Pennsylvania.
 



Do you know the kind of crash these black boxes are designed to withstand? The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) web site gives valuable information regarding these devices.

Regarding the Cockpit Voice Recorder it says:





"The CVR records the flight crew's voices, as well as other sounds inside the cockpit. The recorder's "cockpit area microphone" is usually located on the overhead instrument panel between the two pilots. Sounds of interest to an investigator could be engine noise, stall warnings, landing gear extension and retraction, and other clicks and pops. From these sounds, parameters such as engine rpm, system failures, speed, and the time at which certain events occur can often be determined. Communications with Air Traffic Control, automated radio weather briefings, and conversation between the pilots and ground or cabin crew are also recorded."


Regarding the Flight Data Recorder it says:



"The FDR onboard the aircraft records many different operating conditions of the flight. By regulation, newly manufactured aircraft must monitor at least twenty eight important parameters such as time, altitude, airspeed, heading, and aircraft attitude. In addition, some FDRs can record the status of more than 300 other in-flight characteristics that can aid in the investigation. The items monitored can be anything from flap position to auto-pilot mode or even smoke alarms."




Thus as we see each plane is equipped with two separate "Black Box" devices which relay different yet complimentary information. ....

If this is true it does seem to be highly improbable that not one of these boxes would survive. Didn't some sort of recording survive in PA.

What's the difference between ramming a building and exploding and nosing into the earth and exploding?

I can believe the black boxes wouldn't survive the WTC collapse, but the two from the Pentagon plane should've survived.

Even if they did, I don't see THIS government releasing the contents. Hell, they can't even get enough documentation together to do a thorough investigation due to the stonewalling of * and company.

Methinks they have something to hide.

I think the ones from PA survived, but have not been released.

I am guessing that the WTC and Pentagon boxes were destroyed by the resulting fires and heat that the crashes and tons of debris caused.

I do believe, however, it has set a new world's record for the largest group of unfounded conclusions in one place...

The boxes are not indestructible. Many durable larger parts of the airplanes' engines were never found-they disintegrated from the force of impact.

11. My take - no evidence, but reasoning

Yes, the black boxes were built to withstand a lot of abuse.

The ones that were involved in the crash into the field in PA and the Pentagon were probably recovered.

BUT, you have to think about this.

Two planes crashed into the towers. A raging jet fuel fire was going on for several hours before the towers collapsed.

That intensity of heat for that period of time probably melted those boxes into mere slag, if anything at all remained. The girders were melting enough to lose structural integrity.

I don't think that much stood a chance of surviving that. I figure, not much of the actual jets (which didn't drop to the ground at impact) actually were left to be more than puddles of melted metal.

It's not surprising that the ones from the WTC or the Pentagon didn't survive. After all, they were not made to be absolutely indestructible.

I've always found this questionable. I can understand that some things survive crashes unscathed - passport, stewardess - but at least six black boxes disappeared? And the Pentagon crash seems like a "regular" crash, unlike the WTC crashes.

I've always thought that they don't release the PA cockpit recordings because they don't support the "heroic passengers" scenario.

18. I know this might sound a bit trite

but when posting about the flight crew could we please refer to the flight crew properly, we are called "Flight Attendants" not stewardess and this change went into effect over 20 years ago, considering that these women and men are federally mandated to be on the aircraft can we give them the respect they deserve.
