Lieberman: Now's "not a time for rookies" (Dean and Clark)

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, in an interview broadcast Sunday, questioned whether two of his chief rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination -- retired Gen. Wesley Clark and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean -- are ready to be president, saying, "it's not a time for rookies."

"These are very serious times; we're facing challenges today at home and in the world the likes of which we have not faced together in a long, long time," Lieberman, D-Connecticut, told ABC's "This Week." "It's a time for change from George Bush, but it's not a time for rookies."

Asked who the "rookies" are, he replied, "Well, Howard Dean has been a governor, Wes Clark is new to politics -- so that's two."

Is Dean a rookie? I guess four years in the Vermont Legislature, four and a half as Lieutenant Governor, and eleven and a half as Governor makes you a rookie. That's interesting.

Clinton served twelve years as Governor of Arkansas (just a few months longer than Dean) and two as state Attorney General. I guess he, too, was a rookie when he became President. And he led America to record peace and prosperity!

Seriously, I agree with Lieberman about Clark being a political rookie. I disagree with Joe about Dean. Dean has more governing experience than Bill Clinton did when he ran for Prez in 1992.

Kerry... despite his one stupid vote on the war, has a long and distinguished liberal voting record, unlike Clark who has none.

First, Clark's no rookie. While he's showing the inevitable sputtering of a candidate new to the race, he's done his time in public service. He's negotiated a peace treaty, led a war, and taught economics at West Point. He worked in OMB and has spent more time in the White House than you ever have. And, oh, he's been through the fire. You've never gotten through West Point, Joe. I'm sure Laura Tyson will make as good a Treasury Secretary for Clark as for you.

Second, Dean's not a rookie. While he's showing the inevitable sputtering of a candidate in his first national race, he's done his time in public service. He's balanced budgets, he's dealt with a legislature and a judiciary that's done things he wished they didn't, and he's fought progressive battles. He's spent more time governing than you ever will. And, oh, he's been through the fire. You've never gotten through medical school, Joe. I'm sure Max Cleland will make as good a Defense Secretary for Dean as for you.
