I knew I would march again
I knew I would march again.

As a young man of 17, I marched against Nixon, and Vietnam. An unjust war facilitated by men of dubious character and hollow honor, wrapping themselves in the guise of patriotism. I knew little then, of how things worked, but I knew much of how things should be. Idealism came tempered by police sticks and Neanderthal definitions of hair and dress, but it came nevertheless. I knew I would march again.

As a young man of 18, I walked softly over a small hill and rested at a spot where four young students lost their lives in opposition to that same war. It was two years after May 4, 1970, and I knew that I would march again.

As a young man of 20, I heeded the call for the right of women to be treated as equals, and watched as gay males had the audacity to hold an outdoor dance under the dome of a football stadium. I learned that neither love nor competence was gender specific, and I watched my idealism run headlong into bigotry and intolerance packaged as good old time religion. I knew that I had to march again.

I watched with satisfaction in 1974 as Nixon boarded the helicopter for that final ride out of Washington, satisfied that I played at least some small part. I lent myself to the struggle against nuclear power and went back to the land. I lived a life of purpose, and perhaps I would not need to march again.

Time passed, as it is wont to do. I became settled, contented. Things began to accumulate, and new cars felt better than old ones. I packed that idealism away in the trunk of youthful exuberance, replaced by the comforts of everyday life.

And life, to be sure, was good. Hard work and luck netted us whatever we needed and/or wanted. Those things I scoffed at years ago now found places of importance in our new lives, and idealism and justice shared space with sports cars and spur of the moment vacations. Reagan would come, and Reagan would go, and I’d be no worse for wear. I felt no need to march again.

I thought I’d turned the corner, and that all that youthful exuberance had been replaced by the pragmatic conservatism that seems to always accompany some degree of financial success. It should have been time to turn away from those things I believed, and to embrace their antithesis. But I could not. Those deeply held beliefs that were the core of my being so long ago began to reawaken. Bush I stirred the pot, Gingrich turned on the flame, and Limbaugh brought it to a boil. I wondered if I could march again.

Then came the illegitimate bastard son from Texas, stealing the highest office in the land, and stealing my country with it. Here was someone preying on the hearts and minds of innocent Americans, taking their willful ignorance and wrapping it up in a red, white and blue package with a note that said: “Handle with care – hatred enclosed.” I thought it might be time to march again, and I looked for around to find an outlet for my beliefs.

I found this place – this wonderful place. I found people, who, by their thoughts and actions, brought back my sense of righteous indignation, and help me find my purpose. I thank each and every one of you for bringing that back. You all may never understand the lifeline that you provided, the knowledge you have given, and the hope you have restored. On the 25th I will once again lend myself to the cause that is so important to us all. I want my country back.

Thank you, DU.

I knew I would march again.

2. A fine piece you have here.
You should submit it to your local newspaper. They just might print it on their editorial page, depending on their leanings.

13. I have goose-bumps.
You my friend are in the grip on the muse here. We don't know where it comes from, it just sorta flows from our minds to our fingers and says the things that need to be said. This is a beautiful piece and speaks for the minds of thousands. Don't let it die here on this fast moving forum, spread it around and keep on writing. The universe in it's wisdom might just find a way for your writing to become the source of you abudance. You have a gift...use it.

I too have been on hiatus for the last 30+ years and they have been good. It's time to hit the streets again, eh? Time to pay the dues for the good days of indulgence, the fat and comfortable years after squashing tricky Dick and forcing the machine to flee Viet-Nam on a helicopter from a roof-top of a hotel in a land a hemisphere away. Let's do it. Let's show the kids how it's done. Just get basic, love each other and refuse to play.........yes, it means doing without, but WTH, you might learn to play guitar and you will make friends for life that think just like you. Screw em' let's do it........bastards.

14. Welcome back
The march only stopped for a bit during the Carter presidency. It got real lonely for a bit being one of only 4 protesters at a Bush I fund raiser in 1992.

I am enjoying all the new companions.

25. WE THE PEOPLE STAND UP, once again...and I was there too
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 07:22 PM by amen1234
at the University of Michigan during Vietnam, broken when my cousin was killed in Vietnam (19 years old, silver star, purple heart DEAD, in a funeral home in Detroit where all the rooms were filled with the exact same casket, American Flags, nice crisp military photos on top of each, and a river of sadness that still continues to flow)...and I was thrilled when "I'm not a crook !' nixon flew away in the Presidential helicopter...sadly, though...unknown to many of us then, Kissenger remained, poindexter, and lots of other war criminals who should have been seized and placed into prison when the time was ripe....so now, we have to deal with this crowd of criminals again....

and I am marching too.....old now...still healing from my broken bones when the Capital Police ran me over with their car in March 2003....but I will walk with you, and the Veterans who have no legs....and the poor, and the disenfrancised, and the people with disabilities, and the seniors, and all those that bush* is KILLING with his radical right-wing religious fanaticism...I will STAND UP for American values, which are not bush* values...bush* is a crook and a war criminal...

and I still believe in America...I believe that we can do better, that we deserve better...that we can build a world without KILLING innocents...that America is the country that CAN and MUST lead the world to PEACE and that WE THE PEOPLE can still STAND UP and make that happen...throw these crooks out, again....boot bush in 2004

I look for day when the shrub will slime away like nixon did...leave the PEOPLE's HOUSE and we can have OUR country back....and I truly hope that all YOUNG people will STAND UP with us old people, (because that's what it will take), and believe that it can happen....because we proved it once and we KNOW that good people can still throw these crooks out....

30. Really Great Post
You have definite writing ability - I would love to see this get published somewhere - but with DU and all the outlets and people who come here to post, participate or sometimes just read - hopefully your voice will echo for quite a bit longer. Yes Thank God(dess) for DU - I would be definitely be in an alternate universe without it believing I was the odd one out.

A great big hearty welcome to DU :hi:

Saying that just brought visions of Kathy Najmy to mind in Sister Act I.

48. Welcome to DU, dancingbear
What a beautiful post and absolutely one of the best I have read. We are about the same age and our timeline is similar. I was fully awaken when Bush* stole the White House in 2000, and DU became my crisis center, then information center when it opened in 2001; so I, along with everyone else here understand when you call DU your lifeline. DU is incredible, and has been instrumental in changing my life.

Thank you WillyT for providing the link to this thread in a thread you posted this morning because somehow I missed dancingbear's post - a very wonderful post, indeed.

I wish I could be marching today, but my health keeps me physically, but not spiritually away.
