Dick Cheney In Tangle w/ Beltway Caterer - Chocolate Is Truth
When the American Press Club (APC) asked Dick Cheney to be the guest of honor at their January 28, 2003 annual luncheon, the vice president agreed to attend, but only if the APC conceded to one, rather unusual stipulation. Cheney, under advice of his doctor, specifically demanded that the chocolate cake, which was a ceremonial standard on the APC menu, be changed to fit his dietary needs. Reportedly, Cheney was under strict medical orders to avoid chocolate entirely.
For those who aren't familiar with APC luncheons, the climax of their yearly event is the ceremonial after-lunch serving of a gigantic, 300-pound chocolate cake. And even though the vast majority of the of the bigshots at the APC objected to changing this defining element of the menu, the final decision was left to the APC President, who was responsible for inviting Cheney to the event in the first place, and felt obliged to honor his request.
Here's the problem: The 'Chocolate In All' company, famous for their extremely expensive inside-the-beltway, highbrow, dessert catering, had an exclusive, very lucrative contract with the APC…And they only do chocolate. They refused to change the menu item.
When Cheney got wind of what was going on, he personally and aggressively strong-armed the APC to stand down and substitute yellow cake for the traditional chocolate cake. Cheney was so engaged in this situation that he reportedly teamed up with one of his Press Club buddies to accuse a behind-the-scenes APC event organizer of resisting the VP's now-famous 'cake amendment' for political gain.
