Washington Post runs SICK Lockheed Martin Ad
http://www.washingtonpost.com/

I have written them about the offensive ad(see below). Here's the contact email webnews@washingtonpost.com

(snip)
Dear W.P.,

I am offended by the Lockheed-Martin ads appearing today at the bottom of your main page.

1. There is no way to close the ad without being redirected to their homepage.
2. (and most importanly) I am not a large weapons dealer or governement defense agency, and I imagine that 99.99% of the rest of your reader are not as well.

In particular I am offended by the "fear the terrorists/no on is safe" push of the ad. Cue the picture of the building tops of a major city. Draw an arrow to an apartment building. Then to a marketplace. Then, very close to both, an arrow pointing to a possible missle launcher.

At the end the ad says "We never forget who we are working for." Well, as a reader, I haven't forgotten who they are working for, either - and it's NOT me or any other American citizen.

Please do not give in to the current push to play on our fears of another terrorist attack. Do not insult the intelligence of your readers. We have more brain power that you realize.

Remove this inflamatory ad. Remain a viable reporting agency.

2. Wow. That was pretty bad.
WTF are they advertising there anyway? It's not National Defense Review or Jane's or anything. Strange.

9. Truly odd
It seems out of the ordinary for the Washington Post. Is this product or manufacturer up for budget review? It looks a lot like public lobbying - which they don't really need to do. It's not like we average citizens get to vote on whether or not they get contracts.

4. Bizarre ad...
Missile launcher?

"Well, as a reader, I haven't forgotten who they are working for, either - and it's NOT me or any other American citizen."

Amen to that!!

I closed it by clicking the "X" on the left and didn't get redirected to their site.

What the f**k?

(Note though, if you are careful about clicking exactly on the "x" in the ad, you can close it without going to their home page.)

12. Yes, the new weapons can kill even SMALLER children!

Even get em right in the eye, just like the Israelis do the ten year olds!

6. Do you have a direct link? (of the ad)
At my company we filter out many of the common ad servers so we just see this stuff as a big "X" anyway. Ignorance is bliss in this case.

Examples:
*.tribalfusion.com
ad.doubleclick.net

ad.doubleclick.net link.

I clicked it and it went to the lockheed site. The site says,

Site unavailable for maintenance
We're currently doing maintenance on our system.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and ask that you try the site again in a few hours.

If you are here for Open Enrollment click here.

If you refresh the WaPo home page there are a couple of different Lockheed Martin ads running. Both are pretty twisted.

11. ok, you are right about the "X"
I tried to click on it again and got it to close. I guess I must have twitched my hand just in the slightest before and clicked on the "tell me more" fine print just below it last time.(wow, that was slick of them, now wasn't it?)

I'm sorry, I don't have a direct link to the ad....

16. the ad actually looks like they want people to launch missiles
from their balconies at helicopters and jets going over DC...

there are always a LOT of low-flying helicopters buzzing people's balconies here in OUR Nation's Capital...including the pResidential helicopters and helicopters from military installations bringing high level guys over to the pentagon....that ad is scary and totally uncalled for...there are similar ads in the MetroTrain stations, especially near the 'pentagon' Metro stop...what a waste of our taxpayers money (and that's what pays for this garbage - OUR taxes to lockheed-martin military contracts - so they can bombard us with scary ads and encourage terrorism in our big cities)....

17. for those who can't see ad...one show a arial view of a major city
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 02:15 PM by amen1234
with separate arrows pointing to 'market' and 'apartment complex' and 'missile launcher'

the other ad that pops up shows a outer-space view of the world, with a missile floating around and coming toward earth...and separate arrows pointing to 'incoming missile' and 'target city'

some people don't realize that this is what our military/pentagon people do all day...think of ways to KILL people with Weapons of Mass Destruction (which is what missiles are)...it's the world of military and they never get out to the real world to figure out if their madness is acceptable to US who pay for it....most pentagon people would not find anything wrong with those ads, and even embrace them...

18. I find sick the ad whith the Predator drone.
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 02:18 PM by AP
I pleased to note that I have no idea what this is a commerical for (the Army? Air Force? GE?).

It's the one that starts with a young kid playing with a remote control model airplane. He grows up to become a remote control pilot of a Predator Drone.

Those Predators are used to fly around and execute people without benefit of a trial. I don't have a problem with armies fighting each other when the battle is bewteen democracy and fascist imperealism. But I have a slight problem with remote control political assassinations.

Unfortunately, my spamblocker also keeps me from voting in some internet polls. Haven't figured out how to disable it.
