Haley Barbour for Governor? Klansmen in the Mississippi Statehouse?
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/20/mgrind.day.mississippi/index.html

Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, a Democrat narrowly elected four years ago, and his big-name, high-dollar GOP challenger, Haley Barbour, who has outraised Musgrove by a mile and probably poses the most serious threat of any challenger in the four major off-year elections taking place three weeks from tomorrow.

Musgrove might mention a scandalous photo of Barbour recently featured on the Web site of the white supremacist group, the Council of Conservative Citizens. http://www.cofcc.org/

The election year Mississippi Black Hawk Barbecue and Political Rally held on July 19 drew dozens of political candidates and was attended by a crowd of over 500. The Black Hawk Barbecue is sponsored by the Council of Conservative Citizens to raise money for private academy school buses.

See picture of Barbour with good old boys:
(Pictured L-R: Chip Reynolds, State Senator Bucky Huggins, Ray Martin, GOP gubernatorial nominee Haley Barbour, John Thompson, and Black Hawk Rally emcee and C of CC Field Director Bill Lord.)

Remember Barbour? He's an old Republican political hack who was practically chased from the political spot light when his money-grubbing found him aboard a Chinese government yacht, accepting $3.5 million for the Republican Party for use in national campaigns, through a propped-up "think-tank.

The revelation of the 'loan' forced the Republican committee which was investigating alleged illegal contributions to Democrats from the Chinese to either sanction Barbour of get off of the subject. The hearing closed abruptly without anyone examining Barbour's money-grubbing hypocrisy.

To support his scheme to hijack the next-generation of defense dollars, which our soldiers desperately need, and our country can scarcely afford, he conspired with Ed Rogers, vice chairman of Barbour Griffith & Rogers, Inc., the firm he founded with Haley Barbour in 1991.

One of the lobbying groups who hope to benefit from the blood and sacrifice of our soldiers and from our nation's garnished wages is named, New Bridge Strategies. http://www.newbridgestrategies.com/

The group is headed by Joe Allbaugh, Mr. Bush's campaign manager in 2000, and the former head of FEMA. Among the other members of this vulture's club are Edward Rogers and Lanny Griffith, lobbyists who were assistants to president George Bush I and now hope to exploit their close ties to the White House.

To support their scheme to hijack the next-generation of defense dollars, which our soldiers desperately need, and our country can scarcely afford, he conspired with Ed Rogers, vice chairman of Barbour Griffith & Rogers, Inc., the firm he founded with Haley Barbour in 1991.

One more attempt by the Bush corporate confederation to leech onto the new defense money pie from outside of government, behind a slick web page; as faceless opportunists in the short line for the new appropriated largess.

5. I always thought that the CCofC were stealth racists,
but after looking over that website, there is nothing stealthy about them. I think it is perfectly fair to brand Barbour a racist for associating with these people.

Am I correct that John Ashcroft and Trent Lott are members of this group or that they were at one time? What about Barbour?

6. dunno, might as well have been
From Jesse Jackson Jr.'s web site:

William Lord Jr., a former organizer of the Black Hawk Rally, is state coordinator for the Council of Conservative Citizens in Mississippi, a group that received national notoriety this year because of Senate Republican leader Trent Lott's refusal to support a resolution condemning the organization.

On the national stage, the story is quite different. Lott, R-Miss., was widely criticized after reports that he spoke to a Jackson, Miss., meeting of the Council of Conservative Citizens.

State Rep. Willie Perkins, D-Greenwood, the past chairman of the state legislative Black Caucus whose district boundary runs near here, rejected an invitation to speak here four years ago and was not in attendance Saturday.

"I thought it was symbolic of a Klan rally. Although there may be some changes ... all the rights we enjoy as a whole, this group has always been against it," said Perkins. "It wasn't set up for people like me."

7. He's at a barbeque raising money for
private academy school buses. The significance of that might be lost to people outside Mississippi. The area that Barbour is from (Yazoo City) is still one of the most segregated areas in the state. The public schools are about 90% black up there because most whites send their kids to private academies. Politicians from that area hve been trying for years to pass a bill mandating tuition reimbursement to parents who send their kids to private schools. I'm sure that if Barbour is elected a similar bill will be brought forward again and I expect him to try to get it pushed through.

11. Thompson's committee shut down right after it hit the press
The media clammed up about also. Here's a flashback to Barbour's activity at the beginning of the Bush administration:

The New York Times
July 22, 2001
A Barbour, A Baker, A Chinese Rainmaker-

In a new meshing of money and politics, the Republican fund-raiser and heavyweight lobbyist Haley Barbour has branched out into Washington’s latest twist on the influence game. He has signed up as a senior adviser to Milestone Merchant Partners, a newly formed private equity group.

It is modeled after the Carlysle Group, a successful merchant bank based in Washington that has relied on such prominent Republicans as
former President George Bush and James Baker 3rd to drum up investment business around the globe. In this case, Mr. Barbour will be opening doors along with James Baker - James Baker 4th, a Washington lawyer and son of the former presidential adviser.

“Milestone has got great potential and I’m happy to serve,” said Mr. Barbour, who is Fortune magazine’s No. 1-ranked Washington lobbyist with more than 50 corporations signed as clients.

During the 1997 campaign finance hearings, Mr. Barbour was hauled before Congress to explain his financial ties to a prominent Hong Kong businessman who was helping finance the Republicans.

Money from China is flowing to Mr. Barbour again. Milestone Partners is financed by $100 million from the Koo’s Group, a $36 billion Taiwanese financial conglomerate with a broad range of businesses throughout thePacific Rim.

12. Musgrove has been hitting Barbour pretty hard in ads
Always refers to him as "Washington lobbyist Haley Barbour." Gives various quotes from Barbour such as "We only advocate positions that we truly believe in," then the ad lists some of his clients: Big Tobacco, Mexico, etc.

Barbour has responded by having one of his cronies do an ad talking about how "proud we are of Haley Barbour," and accusing Musgrove of dirty politics. He never specifically denies any of the allegations, however.

I think Musgrove's ads have been pretty effective. I've talked to a lot of people who don't care much for "Washington lobbyists."
