1. Well Leveticus says
that Homosexuals and Shellfish eaters shall be put to death so I guess we can include them as well.

So the list is, Muslims, people who have oil, and gays. Sounds just about right.

27. So does that mean that true christians
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 04:57 PM by kayell
should nuke the local red lobster?

(I know, I know they always say that the new testament turns over the old testament laws, but why should they get to pick WHICH ones are overturned or not? I don't recall jesus letting them off the hook on the shellfish issue.)

I say it's time to invade and conquer those godless, heathen seafood restaurants!!!!

2. I think that's the translation in the NSRV
New Standard Republican Version. You're also free to kill dark-skinned people, folks who don't speak English as well as you'd like, folks who have the misfortune to be sitting on top of diamond reserves, as well as people who live in other inconvenient areas such as Central America.

3. This is how my protestant friends define that
I have ALWAYS believed that "Thou shalt not kill" meant you should not kill, but my protestant friends believe it means murder. Of course this is totally idiotic and only serves the right's willingness to justify their murder of civilians in Iraq (i think almost 10000 have died in our "liberation" efforts) as not bad in God's eyes.

This frequent bullshit where W believes God loves him and no other leader is why I'll never, EVER, vote for a republican.

7. I will agree with your friend
I too believe that it means murder. Is killing in self defense or the defense of others forbidden? I say no. And if unfortunatly I am ever put in the position to need to do such, I suspect that on my judgement day when I meet God he will agree that it was acceptable.

11. I believe that the 'don't kill' directive was revised in later years
Here's the new version:

"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also"
(Matthew 5:39,40).

13. This is how it was defined in my Sunday School class
Even if you're a soldier, and you kill an "enemy" you have to ask God for forgiveness. That is our (Catholic's) secret: sin then go to a confessional, and maybe on trial depending on the sin.

20. What does "Unborn" mean
It doesn't mean person? There are many names for such, fetus, embryo, but not person. All animals have embryos and fetus' but they are not people either. You become a person upon birth. Or are you re-writing biology books also?

I'm one of those protestants who think it actually means "murder", but the thing is, we don't really know until it's too late, right? I mean, if I'm defending myself, then whatever, it IS killing, but not murder, and as far as I can tell, I'm OK with God. As far as killing a bunch of people in another country for no apparent reason, oh yeah, someone's gonna have to answer for it.

It's the only reason I even believe in a God anymore. I have to hold on to the belief that somewhere, somehow, these people are going to get theirs.

17. Try to live by the golden rule here...
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. My husband was talking about the gun thing and defending himself or me or his loved ones and this is what said..

So, this person kills someone you love and care about and you kill him. Do you think that someone on the other side doesn't care for him/her as well and love them? Do you think God sees my life as being more worthy than his/hers?

My stance is that all life is sacred and if I die to someone then that is their conscious. I do not fear death it is only another state of being.

Remove the element of fear.

nt . The commandment had no clarifying language. "God" could have meant a number of things by it. He could have meant don't kill humans, period. He could have meant don't kill humans except in self-defense, and he could have meant don't kill humans or animals or plants.

23. it's all about intentions
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 04:42 PM by Kusala
either way, killing is wrong.

I don't believe in God, so i don't believe there's some other being judging and "punishing" us, but I do believe there is a sliding scale through which we reap results, even for the same act.

When you kill with passion: hate, anger, revenge, you are commiting yourself to horribly bad kamma. Or when you've premeditated the killing of someone, that's just as bad.

But then, killing someone in self-defense could be just as psychologically devastating. Especially if it fuels a new passion(hatred, etc.)/emotional damage(and how could it not?)

Bottom line, any time you kill someone you're creating scars for the future.

I think it's outlawed in most religions for good reason.

Of course, YMMV, that's just the way I see it.
:)

29. also
you have to make the controversial distinction between life forms. Why are humans more important than animals?

Christianity takes care of this with the bible(whole other can of worms). But if you don't practice christianity, can you rationalize that it's because humans are more advanced? In that case, why did the ant get the raw end of the deal, while you were born as an advanced being? And if there are more intelligent lifeforms on other planets, do they look down on you the same way, as if you are an ant?

Of course, if you include all life forms, then we kill all the time. It's part of the natural process. Which brings us back to intentions.

I just think that it's interesting that we say killing in war is ok, but if I kill someone on the street, I go to jail. Ironic that the only killers in war who get tried for war crimes, are the losers.

I take the scars of the future vs being dead and leaving those scars for my family.
