Peace in the Middle East
Has there ever been any long lasting peace in the middle East? In reading the Bible and studying civilization there was fighting most of the time with few short years of peace. Now if God almighty(if you believe in an Almighty God) did not bring nor has he brought them to peace what makes mere mortal man think that he will accomplish this? Is this to say that Bush really thinks that God is leading him like Moses in the OT?

1. I'll see your red heifer and raise you a million black flags from Khurasan

You gonna fold, rapture, or join the army?

2. I am probably going to piss some people off here, but IMHO
historically the Middle East seems to be more "peaceful", or actually disarmed and oppressed, when they are under the yoke of a conqueror. First the Egyptians, then the Assyrians, Persians, Romans and finally the Ottoman Turks. That doesn't mean that it's the only way this will happen. I may have missed a moment of peace in there so correct me if I am wrong.

I think the ME has always been an area of tribal squabbles and it's been sort of the way of life and culture for millenium. I think though now for the future that the leaders of the ME, including the Israelis need to come to the negotiating table without interference from Western or other powers, to work out a reasonable peace solution. They need a majority agreement and then they can move forward. Although, maybe I am being naive.

3. This region is no different than any other historically
Wars come and go--it's a human condition.

The major difference for this region -- following WWI it was carved up into states through the efforts and desires of outside powers. Strange that two of the countries, who, for the most part had a hand in their borders have been the most stable relatively (i.e. Turkey and Iran--the conflict in Iran was both internal and external)

Take a look southwards to Africa, westwards to South America---

They are slowly, ever so slowly coming out of the mess made by foreign intervention.

The modern middle east was created long after the scramble for Africa and the Spanish, etc. colonial efforts.
