The Ubiquitous Clintons
With Hillary as the guest of honor in Iowa and Bill's book to be surely released in the weeks leading up to the most important election in history, how should we, as Democrats, feel about their ubiquity.

I love the Big Dog, and admire Hillary, but I'm thinking it's time for them to shit or get off the pot. The Big Dog is in legacy mode right now and refuses to barb the well-deserving pResident. His book release will draw tons of commentary and whip the Clinton haters into a frenzy at the most inopportune time imaginable.

At the same time, Hillary can't help but suck up alot of the limelight that the next President (duly elected, this time) of the US needs to gain traction with the people who don't spend all of their free time pontificating politics.

Throw in another terrorist attack and Ronald Reagan's death, and the Clintons will have earned a bona fide assist in the re-Selection of dubya.

What gives?

1. Why blow your wad 13 months before the election?
Sorry about the secual comment, but it's true. If Clinton is all over the place, the Repugs will make the election ALL about the Clintons. Personally, I think he should be used in a select number of swing states in the months leading up to the election. Oh yeah, give him the featured speaker role at the convention. On the day before we introduce our candidate to the world.

2. Hillary's book was a good thing.
It didn't just piss conservatives off; it scared them by demonstrating how popular Hillary was, despite years and years of a virulent anti-Clinton hate campaign. I think Bill's book will have a similar impact. We need their voices out there -- they help add legitimacy to the Democrats, by serving as living reminders of how good the years between 1992 and 2000 were. The more publicity they get, the better, and the more pissed the wacko Right gets, the better. At some point all that frothing at the mouth becomes counter-productive, and turns people away from it. I wish some of the people here could figure that out, whenever they start attacking some Democratic politician for failing to be nasty enough in their attacks on Bush.

4. interesting analysis
I agree about Big Dog's timing being sorta bad. If it came out now, it would be hot news as the primaries heat up, reminding all Americans just how good it can get when you manage the government responsibly. I think this would have a salutory effect on the candidates, who right now are not comporting themselves with the best of decora.

But, on the other hand, Republicans tend to do poorly when they get all frothy mouthed, as the possessor of the Almighty, Corruption-Causing Penis tends to make them get, and they do best when they sanctimoniously wrap themselves in the flag and act like God's gift to democracy.

They are a unique couple in American politics, so I say let's just let them traipse around the limelight for a few minutes. They've been mostly good to us. I have trouble seeing Reagan's death as a moment to help Republicans gather votes. The terrorism thing is worrisome. If it happens in September while Bush is being his most partisan, it'll look bad for him. This would be the second attack on his watch and it would happen after years of PATRIOT Act crack downs.

If it happens in late October, we're fucked.

5. They drive freepers nuts. Why put a cork in that????
The RW is terrified of the Clintons -- hence the never-ending fascination with them.

I say turn 'em loose! :kick:

6. There were people who said Hillary's book was going to
take publicity away from our Dem candidates. Well, that never transpired, so I wouldn't worry. I don't know exactly when Bill's book is coming out, but I doubt if it'll hurt us. And Hillary hosting that dinner is not a big deal. Both of them have actually been pretty much out of the spotlight lately.

7. Ubiquitous? Haven't you heard the gossip? BOTH of them have been

seen masticating in public!

I am not kidding.

And there are rumors that they have both matriculated in the past. Really.

And I won't even mention that Hillary once thought about performing as a thespian. Oh, I did mention it.

See how evil these people really are?

Edit: dammit, typing too fast

8. I think the Reich would really like to see less of them and.
preferably neither of them. What I don't understand is why you would would feel this way? There presence reminds us of the great years of service they gave us. I want to see more and more of them until we get some Constitution respecting Americans back into the White House.

9. Funny you should bring this up
today on Crossfire Tucker said the SAME exact thing. I think the Clinton's are a great asset to our party. I think the timing of the book release is perfect. The repukes should be foaming at the mouth come November 2004. Hillary? She is nothing less than an inspiration for the Dems and I think they BOTH should be invited to speak at the convention where we introduce the new soon to be Prez. THAT would really piss the repukes off! Hillary and Bill both...speaking. <sigh> I miss them. :( IMCPO, Al Gore screwed up by NOT using Clinton while he campaigned...we should not make the same mistake twice....he's a savvy politician....we should take advantage of it this time. The repukes hate Clinton...not the Democrats.

10. it's not so much Reagan I'm worried about, it's George Sr. and Babs
George HW and Barbara are no spring chickens themselves, I know HW must be around 80, so he might croak at any minute.

it will be huge then, Bush will get a big sympathy vote because his dad died.

If Reagan or Ford croak within the next 11 months then we're ok, if they go in September or October of 04 then we're in trouble, too close to the election
