The Oblivia Chronicles: part II -- The Bridge

Last week, as explosions, riots and ambushes continued in Iraq, President Bush announced that he intended to turn up the heat on Fidel Castro and prosecute anyone who violated the travel ban to Cuba.

Thus, I felt it was time for another visit to the primitive island of Oblivia. On our last trip, you may recall, we met self-appointed Mayor Jefe and his angry sidekick, Sher-if, a former potter who could not throw straight.

… One day Sher-if came running into Jefe's hut with news. "Most Honorable Leader," he shouted -- for Jefe enjoyed titles nearly as much as ceremony -- "your followers are gathered by the Oblivian River. They are cutting trees and gathering vines to build a bridge."

Scratching his head, Jefe asked, "What is their intent?"

"To get to the other side," said Sher-if, "where they hope to become acquainted with another tribe."
