OTTAWA - Jean Chrétien was prepared to dismiss a narrow Yes vote in Quebec's 1995 sovereignty referendum while at the same time moving in troops to protect federal buildings, says a new biography of the prime minister.
"I don't want to be the last prime minister of Canada," Chrétien told his staff, author Lawrence Martin writes in Iron Man: The Defiant Reign of Jean Chrétien.
"I never thought of that ... I'll tell you a little secret you can put in your own book: In every election I was sure of winning, I wrote a little concession speech just in case. Because we're a lot more generous when we're certain of winning."
