BBV: Diebold Targeted By Electronic Civil Disobedience
http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/WO0310/S00237.htm

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, October 21, 2003

DIEBOLD TARGETED WITH ELECTRONIC CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

Swarthmore, Pa. -- Defending the right of a fair, democratic election, Why War? and the Swarthmore Coalition for the Digital Commons (SCDC) announced today that they are rejecting Diebold Elections Systems' cease and desist orders and are initiating an electronic civil disobedience campaign that will ensure permanent public access to the controversial leaked memos.

Earlier this week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation announced that it will defend the right of Online Privacy Group, the Internet service provider for San Francisco Indymedia, to host links to the controversial memos. Going one step further, Why War? and SCDC members are the first to publicly refuse to comply with Diebold's cease and desist order by continually providing access to the documents.

"These memos indicate that Diebold, which counts the votes in 37 states, knowingly created an electronic system which allows anyone with access to the machines to add and delete votes without detection," Why War? member Micah explained.

Although the reasons for individual engagement in the civil disobedience vary, the consensus between the two groups is that the public availability of these documents must be protected at any cost.

Thus, through active electronic civil disobedience, Why War? and SCDC will bring to light the usually silent acts of suppression and censorship. The result will be a permanent and public mirror of the memos: documents whose public existence challenges the assumed presence of democracy in America.

4. This is great!!
I think that Diebold may have a bit of a dilemma on their hands. If they push too hard or try for a court order maybe the mass media picks up on it.

8. Warning... to prevent this thread being locked.... don't link to the memos
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 07:13 PM by althecat
By way of background these memos have been doing a merry spin around the globe for several months.

That's why I linked above to the press release. I am fairly sure given past reactions on this subject that the mods will take a dim view of any direct links...

9. I e-mailed the Dean of Swarthmore
Please check out the Why-War website and send e-mail showing support for the action to the Dean. This is serious help for the BBV cause. I have a niece who recently graduated from this college and it is a good one.

24. Text of request for support
From the Slashdot thread on this issue:

You can have a real effect on what is going to happen. Please take a few minutes to help us out with this action.

Here's how to help:

1) The students engaging in this civil disobedience are meeting with the Dean of their college Wednesday, October 22nd at 4pm. We need you to email *nice* and *supportive* emails to rgross1 (at) swarthmore.edu and cc them to info (at) why-war.com *before* October 22nd at 4pm EST. Please help Dean Bob Gross understand the importance of this issue!

http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/10/22/0142252.shtml?tid=103&tid=126&tid=153&tid=172&tid=99

And the story just below that is "Observer Pans Touchscreen Voting Test."

http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/10/22/0057244.shtml?tid=103&tid=126&tid=99

riversidevoter writes "I recently observed the Logic and Accuracy 'test' given to the touchscreen voting machines in Riverside CA. Riverside County uses voting machines and software from Sequoia Voting Systems. The voting kiosks do not produce a voter-verified paper trail. As a computer programmer familiar with software testing, I was really disappointed at what I saw."

that Diebold is only the typ of the iceberg... The other companies are probably as bad! We just don't happen to have memos from them, which may mean simply that they are better than Diebold at covering their track...
This is all good, but it has to go well beyond Diebold. Even if Diebold suddenly disappeared from the face of the planet, new companies would replace it and do exactly the same thing, unless the broader rules are changed!

27. I second that...
Diebold is not the only problem.

There has been an error in program module "vote"
Election data may be corrupted.
Your democracy may need to be rebooted.

29. From drips to waves
YES! Magazine http://www.futurenet.org/ introduces an article by Palast and Howard this way: "The techniques that brought us Florida 2000 are catching on across the U.S. Add unverifiable electronic voting, and we could see the most questionable election yet. How do we reclaim our vote?" http://www.futurenet.org/27government/palast.htm

This a large and significant issue, and it will continue to draw together a large and significant coalition. It is being addressed on several fronts and in several (occasionally fractious) ways. Different folks are bringing, and will bring, different strategies and tactics to bear. And even when there is disagreement about the details, each blow for democracy is a part of the whole.

This is one of the core issues that are defining a broad new alliance against all forms of tyrrany. We have our musicians, our news reporters, our visual artists, our researchers, our fact-checkers, our organizers, our essayists, our analysts, our agitators, our humorists, our film-makers, our radio hosts, class warriors from all political tendencies and many nations.

Not just drip, drip, drip; now waves are building.

Yep. And if you throw your server in a swimming pool, you loose all files too. Oooooooo -- Scary stuff kiddies1.

This bug only makes sense in the context of Texas certification, as Jeff pointed out. The whole requirement is stupid beyond redemption. A user can put a DOS floppy in the drive and fdisk the hard drive. Is that a security breach too?

Whitman, I think there might be some flags in the file open dialog to prevent delete and change directory. Please look into this, and then set those flags if the Texas log printer entry is not null.
