I Don't Get NY
...or NYC...the city is actually way more conservative than a lot of south of the Mason-Dixon line cities I know. Their Democrats fit right into a Republican dream (Ed Koch, Cuomo...) and they have never put forth any leaders in the way of Progressive values.

Think about NYC...have you ever known a more racist, xenophobic area than Queens? Long Island? Damn, even Manhattan is full of Republican Yuppie Scum.

Whoever thinks NYC is any kind of liberal haven doesn't know the place very well. Most NY Dem's I know are indistinguishable from the Republicans.

I'm of the opinion we progressives should write off NYC, and stick to where we can suceed. Personally, I think the Midwest and a lot of the South is more up-for-grabs than New York is. The Midwest is reeling from the assault on them by big business, and the South's only alignment with the Repubs is on Religion. Give them a local candidate like the Kucinich of old, and you've got the South in your hands.

4. Putting on my asbestos suit
I live in California (california...ahhhh...those dipsh*ts who just elected a groping nazi gorilla as their Governor.)

But I have relatives in Long Island (Massapequa, if you're familiar) and never have I known such a group of Likud-worshipping Freepers in my life. I spent many summers on the Island, as well as in NYC.

I also spent summers in Iowa, from my dads side of the family. People I knew there were Old Fashioned Democrats. They didn't like large scale changes, whether they were big government programs, or big government wars against other countries. They're still that way to much of an extent.

The Democratic Party has abandoned the Midwest and the South, concentrating on the big cities. Sure there are a lot of progressives, but there are a lot of Freepers with Democratic party membership.

I have a cousin in law who is a registered Democrat, but listens with glee every time a homeless person freezes to death in Central Park, or gets beaten by local kids. "They deserve it," he says, "You have no idea how confrontational these people are." Confrontation or no confrontation, no one deserves to freeze to death.

I know California is no paradise....and we have a group of monkeys in muscle cars who just elected a muscle head as governor. But most people out here are at least marginally progressive, which is more than I can say for the Freepers I came to know in the Big Apple.

NYC doesn't vote exclusively for the President.

I don't think it's wise to write off 31 electoral votes, especially now that California is in (some) danger of going Republican.

8. NYC is very liberal
maybe you're hanging out in the wrong neighborhoods. I have been going there for business since the early nineties (on a weekly basis), lived there for a year, and have tons of friends from NY Metro. So I know NY very well, and you are absolutely wrong.

Look at the number of Dems they elect to Congress. And there is a lot of radical thought floating around the East Village, Lower East Side and Brooklyn.

16. Ok then MARXISTS
Look at Lower Manhattan's boho neighborhoods (if you've ever set foot there) and parts of Brooklyn. Look at the protest marches and radical events that happen in NYC.

And the Dems-with the exception of the two idiots you name-are by and large the liberal variety. As in New England, even a lot of Republicans are RINOs, unlike the rest of the country.

You may find that New Yorkers-most Northeasterners for that matter-are pretty gruff and express themselves in a politically incorrect manner. It doesn't mean they vote that way.

25. That shows how conservative this country has become
Hillary Clinton, like her husband in 92, ran as a Centrist. She opposed tax hikes and gave out and out support for Israel. While senator she voted for the Patriot Act, for the war in Iraq and for one of Bush's tax cuts.

Don't get me wrong, I would vote for her myself. But she is a Centrist Democrat. I'm a centrist, with Liberal tendencies.

14. It sounds like a lot of NYers vote for the 'person', just like
people do everywhere. The apolitical voters in the middle apparently helped Bloomberg and Pataki out, and they also must have voted for Schumer and Hillary, because they LIKE those candidates. Also, apparently, the same voters voted for Hillary, AND Pataki, and Bloomberg, and Schumer. They do this, because they are not ideological; they vote for the candidates they LIKE best!

Just like everywhere else.

38. <Sigh> As off topic as this is
The FBI wants Sharpton in the spotlight (after all he's an un-electable money chasing back stabbing informant), they wanted Jesse Jackson (an amazing orator who can unite people from all over, and actually shed blood in the Civil Rights Struggle) out.

Sharpton pretty much brought all of the allegations against Jackson to light so he could take over.

But this is off topic - if you want to discuss this please IM me.

46. Jeez did you even read what I wrote???
OK....in bullet points:

- Jackson is a major political player.
- Sharpton is a publicity hungry Reverent in NYC.
- FBI works with Sharpton to elminate certain elements within Black Leadership in America. Like COINTELPRO, they want it under their control.
- Sharpton is used by the FBI to discredit Jackson, and becomes the most prominent Black in American Politics.

Sharpton isn't a Liberal, he's a tool. Big difference.

I do agree tho that weve gone way off topic.

60. no, the midwest is crawling with bible thumping repukes
and the south is full of repukes who married their cousins.

and california obviously has their retard heads up their asses.

So, we should write off New York, California, the South, Texas, the Midwest and just focus on Eugene Oregon.

68. I have never seen so much garbage in one post.
If you don't live here, then you really don't know what it is like to live here. NYC is a great place to live and in case you didn't know, we are not all raving racists running amok.

NYC is a diverse place with many different races and ethnic groups. It has always been this way and this is what makes this city great. Please stop insulting people because of whatever prejudice you seem to have.

So the NY Democrats are just like Republicans? Thanks a lot for your insight. I never knew. I guess all of us Republicans just love to vote for Democrats. :eyes:

Sheeeeeeeesh!! Learn about NY before you post about it!

70. Although Long Island *is* conservative...
Just about everything else you have said is bullshit, and based on nothing other than your obvious irrational hostility toward my city.

Or maybe you have a *problem* with your family in NY?

72. Let's just fucking drop it, OK?
If you want to settle this with a fistfight, I will do so reluctantly.

But otherwise this is frickin pointless...I apologize for insulting your city. Chances are, my experiences in NYC are radically different than yours. Some of you come out to my side of the Earth and see Roseville, Modesto, Contra Costa County and Gilroy and think you've landed in Freeperville.

So let's bury the fricken hatchet, aight?

I'm sick of it, and I would think you would be too...

BTW...If I had started a thread bashing the south, or the midwest...I would have nothing but cheers and amens.

SIGH...I kinda wonder how we ever plan to take back the red states....

If you want to irrationally bash entire regions of the U.S., I suggest you take it somewhere else. DU isn't the place for this kind of BS.

If you want to continue, come out here to California, my names in the book, and I'll even let you get the first punch in.

Sounds reasonable?

Insult an entire region in an ignorant fashion.

Defend your ignorance for 70 posts.

Cut and run like a coward asswipe after the beatings have gotten to you.

102. Public apology in a whole new thread
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 07:28 PM by WilliamPitt
sans challenges to fistfights.

"I'm sorry I insulted New York. That was stupid."

There. You can cut and paste.

Since you're about smearing whole regions, you can apologize for Nixon and Reagan while you're at it.

Let's learn some respect, aight?

To the curb.

That goes for anyone dissing any proud city, not just NY, like this.

Especially when it has no basis in fact.

But feel free to hate the Yankees all you want, plenty of us here do, too.

Umm NY is one of the most Dem state in the country. Gore won it by 25%. Off the top of my head, I think the only state where Gore did better were Massachusetts and Rhode Island (and DC). If you want to write off NY, you're working on a 2 19 electoral vote stategy.
